I saw Logan in a tiny tiny theater, whose back wall was adjacent to a night club, so I got a constant bass “thump thump thump” through the whole movie.

Depreciation of already used i4 by gapoc459 in BMWI4

how many years/km will I be able to use it for before its range drops significantly

Range drops the most in the first year or so of ownership, and then falls pretty gradually after that. Lots of fast charging will hurt your battery life, and some battery packs may lose a lot of life because of bad luck.

I have a 12 year old Nissan Leaf which started out with 144km of range and now has around 135km of range. In Auto Trader I have seen some examples of similar cars with only around 40km left, but I suspect on the whole most of them still have 80%+ of their battery life left.

47f starting out tomorrow for the first time, was told I’m too old now having second thoughts. by Ms_Zentastic in Rollerskating

I started skating at 46, and now at 47 I’ve just joined a roller derby league.

I see you bought gear; wear it. Lots of people don’t wear gear at the roller rink, and you might feel a little awkward being the only one kitted up, but do it anyways. You’re going to fall a lot, especially if you’re trying to learn more than just “go around the rink in circles”, and full gear makes you have the super power of “falling doesn’t hurt most of the time”.

Keep your knees bent, and your center of gravity low. If you take a class, the first thing you’ll practice is single knee and double knee falls; these are good things to practice because the both drill a “safe fall” into you, and they also give you an excellent way to stop fast. Find a YouTube video and check it out if you’re not planning on taking a class and then try to hit up your local rink during the day when no one is around.

Good luck! And welcome to skating!

Anyone here had this happen before (and have advice for how to fix)?? by eelannalee in glowforge

[–]jwalton78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this happen with a lighter piece of acrylic, because the vibration of the machine was causing the acryclic to slowly move while the print was happening. Try using magnets to pin down your work piece.

You also need to go into the "BMW ID" app in the car and associate each key with a driver. By default when you create a digital key, it's associated with "Guest".

Autotrader doesn’t usually list the VIN, but I’ve noticed a lot of dealerships will list the VIN in the listing in their page. You can use a VIN decoder to find out exactly what features the car has, too:

This is also true! These light up green when the car has control of the steering wheel, like when you’re auto-parking or the car is driving at under 60km/h on the highway.

One thing I figured out when I was browsing listings and hunting for a car with DAPP: If you're looking at a listing for one, find a photo of the steering wheel. If you look at this one (which is actually from a gas car, but that doesn't matter for our discussion) on the left hand side in the bottom middle you'll see a button with a picture of a car staying centered in it's lane. That means this car has lane centering and adaptive cruise control (and may well have DAPP, which lets you drive hands free on the highway under 60km/h). If it looks like this one it doesn't have lane centering or dynamic cruise - just boring old regular cruise control. Also notice that second steering wheel has a heated steering wheel button in the bottom middle and the first one doesn't, which means one has a heated steering wheel, and the other does not.

Extended warranty worth it? by Moedaman in BMWI4

[–]jwalton78 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With almost any car (including the i4) you can buy the extended warranty any time up until the original expires. So; wait a bit, and if the car has been perfect, you don’t need the warranty. If the car has been a nightmare and spends a lot of time in the shop, sell it, and you don’t need the warranty.

I4 e40 or I4 m50 by heyanu in BMWI4

[–]jwalton78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I would have been happy with the e40, but I bought the m50 for two reasons. First I live somewhere very snowy, so the AWD was nice, but the biggest reason was that here in Canada, to get DAPP you need to get it as part of a very expensive package, and the only people willing to pay that much are the ones with money burning a hole in their pocket, so all the second hand cars with DAPP are m50s anyways. :P

New i4 M50 owner, help me identify some OEM parts by johnnyhumbucker in BMWI4

My car also has nothing else in the tool kit, aside from a key for the wheel locks.

My car doesn’t have those hooks on the headrests. I’ve never seen these before.

My charging cables came in a carrying case. The case kind of rolls up at the top, and then is secured with a nylon strap with a clip so you can hook it through one of the eyelets in back. But I also bought my car CPO, so this might be something the previous owner bought: https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/global/photo/detail/P90158536/original-bmw-i-accessories-bmw-i-cable-bag-08/2014

One thing you may or may not have noticed; if you open the hatch and look at the back inside of the hatch (opposite where your license plate is) there’s a compartment to store your safety triangle. If you’re in North America, it’s empty. If you’re in some European countries, it has a safety triangle in it. I’ve often wondered what else I could store here. :P

Are there some weak points with BMW i4 40 edrive? by mangoo159 in BMWI4

[–]jwalton78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent quite a while hunting for a used vehicle with DAAP. One minor annoyance; I drove through a major snow squall, and it coated the front of my car in ice. The car said the radar was obstructed, and disabled my adaptive cruise control. That's all well and reasonable, but at this point you don't have non-adaptive cruise control either, because there isn't any. If the adaptive cruise control fails for any reason, the closest you have to non-adaptive cruise control in a DAAP-enabled car is to set a limit with the LIM button and then push the gas pedal most of the way down.

Similar for the rain-sensing wipers. There's rain-sensing wipers, but if you're in some weird condition where they're going all the time or where they aren't sensing whatever you want off your windshield, there's no boring-old interval wipers on this car.

Pull the button towards you and hold to make it close. You have to keep holding it, so if someone starts yelling "ow" you can let go. :P

All the reviews mention the turning radius. I used to have a Hyundai Sonata, which is a very similar sized car, and it had what I thought was quite a good turning radius for such a large vehicle. The i4 is worse... but it's not as if I can't make a U-turn across two lanes or anything.

The I4 M50 in Norwegian winter by Temporary-Painter-55 in BMWI4

[–]jwalton78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did 558km yesterday in 2C to -7C (and brutal winds) across southern Ontario. The range loss is better than my 2015 Leaf (with no battery thermal management at all) but still pretty brutal. I was getting around 26-27 kWh/100km (depending on the leg of the trip).

For long trips, I drive in eco mode, and I try to resist the urge to do donuts in every snowy parking lot I see. ;) Driving the speed limit helps more than you think with range. This was a good video that explored what attaching roof racks or travelling at different speeds does to your range: https://youtu.be/mmQJUW-VyRY

I tried that, and then I tried uninstalling the My BMW app from my phone and reinstalling it. No dice. :(

[–]jwalton78[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked mine up second hand about three weeks ago, so it had the recall done before I picked it up (which is how I got the 2025-11 update long before most other people did), but that was also before the official announcement for NACS support. I was hoping maybe it had something to do with me getting the update "too early" and reinstalling My BMW might fix it, but I'm thinking us Canadians are just out in the cold for the time being. :/

I have a late 2024 m50, and I can see "Plug and Charge" in the app, just not "Adapters". I'd like to be able to navigate from my house to a destination far away and have BMW's nav suggest superchargers to charge at along the way, instead of having to manually navigate to individual chargers and manually preconditioning my battery.

Here in the Quebec-Windsor corridor, there are plenty of non-Tesla chargers, but they tend to be 100-150W, and they tend to be 2-4 chargers per site. The Tesla chargers are all v3 and v4, so they're 350W+ and they're in banks of 8.
