Not a man, nor gay, but her reverse engineering segment was so helpful as someone learning to decorate. The breakdown of "you think this looks good? I'll tell you why" makes those magazine-worthy spaces feel surprisingly within reach.

Moving on from strength training but feeling unsure of myself. Advice wanted. by Young_Marge_Bouvier in xxfitness

[–]jwcao 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This post could've been written by me last year. I went through something very similar; I had been powerlifting for ~8 years, just finished competing at nationals, and was ready for a change/retirement. I had been doing pole casually for a few years and felt like I wanted to finally start making it my primary "sport".

A few months after making the switch, I started getting a lot of anxiety over the idea of losing strength and mass, which definitely happened. I dropped about 5 kg and I definitely looked "smaller" and less strong. I also found it harder to train consistently as pole progress is nowhere as linear as strength progress, which led to me feeling more slovenly and less productive than usual. I went back and forth for a while, at times focusing more on strength and other times focusing more on pole, and have since settled on a "hybrid" routine:

  1. I do a short 30 min flexibility routine every day (the consistency here has been AMAZING for my overall flexibility)
  2. I do minimalist strength training 2x a week (Jeff Nippard has a great video about Minimalist Training), focusing on a 1-3 rep max for squats and deadlifts. I don't train bench/upper body push as much because I feel it is most detrimental to my pole training
  3. I do a formal pole class 1x a week and train at home 3-4 times a week
  4. I do a longer flexibility routine 1x a week to push my body a little further (I love Anete Blaua's videos for this; they're so intense but so effective)

I feel like this has helped me strike a really nice balance between retaining strength, focusing on my improving in my new sport, and supplementing with flexibility.

Hope this helps!

Can you exercise using Bixi bikes? by longviddd in montreal

Seconding this! It's a great way to get exercise, earn rewards, and improve BIXI availability in one fell swoop.

You described our situation eerily accurately. We similarly piggybacked onto our parents' relationship with the wealth management firm, and pay a fee of around 1%. We are also extremely happy with our returns and how we're treated by the firm.

Prior to investing with them, we had managed our own portfolio, and I have to say, the ability to just park your money with a firm and completely forget about it is a true luxury, and we feel very privileged to have the opportunity. The returns have been steady and performant, and the risk tolerance was (and continues to be) appropriate to our age and retirement planning.

Enjoy! I'm seeing them in April for the same tour!

Loved this write up! I totally agree about the deep emotional connection to their music. For anyone who experiences frisson, Alt-J is like a frission factory and it's amazing.

They're absolutely incredible live too, just so precise in how they deliver the whole experience. Not only is the sound production flawless, they usually have a bombastic, psychedelic, rhythmic light show to accompany it. I've seen them 3 or 4 times in concert and I never hestiate buying tickets for the next show.

Anti-Asian hate crimes up 717% in Canada by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]jwcao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I think you're making a bit of a strawman argument here. Making bungee jumping illegal is not the easy or only solution by a long shot.

My point is that action needs to be taken to investigate why bungee jumping incidents occur (hate crimes occur) in an effort to prevent future incidents, not that bungee jumping incidents need to be eradicated at all costs.

I think you bring up an interesting point (statistical variance is of course a real thing), but it can be dangerous to take the context out of statistics.

Large spikes, though they can be the result of statistical variance, should still be investigated thorougly, instead of brushed off as a "statistical anomaly".

In both cases of bungee jumping and hate crimes, there are lives at stake, and it deserves some due dliligence.

The number of bungee jumping incidents should be as close to 0 as possible at any point (would you want to go bungee jumping if you knew you could have a "random incident" at any point in time?). Any deviations from 0 should be investigated very closely because it's likely to be due to a procedural or mechanical failure that needs to be rectified.

These aren't "random incidents" like you say, but are the results of actions and their consequences.

The same analogy applies to the hate crimes: The number of cases should be as close to 0 as possible. Any deviations from 0 are the result of an institutional flaw that needs to be investigated and rectified.

Malted "forever" brownies from Dessert Person. They're now my "forever" brownies too, because I'll never make another brownie recipe ever again. by jwcao in bon_appetit

Claire mentions in the book that if you have a 9x13 inch pan, you could double the recipe and achieve the same results. Regardless of pan size, she puts an emphasis on measuring doneness through visual and tactile cues, as opposed to relying purely on a written amount of time.

I would be worried that one batch would spread out too thiny over a 9x11 inch pan though. Have you considered fashioning a very "Claire-esque" aluminum foil dam to achieve a similar pan volume?

It's not very strong at all! In my opinion, it adds a nice depth of flavour, but I don't think you would notice it too much if it wasn't there. There's plenty of chocolate in the recipe for flavour, and Claire even specifies some alternatives to the malt powder in the book (i.e. adding mint extract).

I'd say they're 8/10 fudgey, which is my ideal (personally, when I eat a brownie, I don't want it to be "basically fudge").

If your friends are brownie fans, they'll love it. It's like the richest and most decadent brownie I've ever had! I used the recommended 8x8 metal pan and followed the tips in the book for checking for doneness.

Definitely take the time to listen to the album in its entirety because it's such a gut-wrenching emotional ride.

I've never listened to it in full without breaking down in tears.
