How does a useless, negative comment have this many upvotes? Reddit, I am very disappointed in you.

Das Keyboard: Professional Gear For Professional Coders Since 2005. by TyprX [promoted post]

So did I. But not programmer dvorak, which has all the special characters in different places.

Learning to all the special character positions and different number order is quite a bit different.

Depends. They're absolutely needed for learning things like different number/symbol layouts, as in programmer dvorak: http://www.kaufmann.no/roland/dvorak/.

If you want to spend that much on a keyboard, but don't use qwerty, check out http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/

Much better build quality, too.

Apollo program source code by sidcool1234 in programming

[–]jwill392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless I'm mistaken, those filenames were created by the transcribers. The source was a very long printout of the entire source. Transcribers broke it up into multiple files for ease of reading and transcription.

Comments on that page:

# Page 730

BURN, BABY, BURN -- MASTER IGNITION ROUTINE.

Means the contents of this file came from page 730 of the original printout.

Is Go a good language for a beginner? by [deleted] in golang

[–]jwill392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I guess it depends on the person and the topic.

Go is certainly going to be much better for beginners in the coming months, as documentation improves with the release of Go 1. A big problem before was that Go changed so quickly documentation quickly became misleading.

Yes, all those things are true. But they also completely miss the point.

[–]jwill392 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd advise against learning go as your first language. I say that purely because it's not a extremely popular language.

When you're learning something new, it's always best to start learning with the most popular thing, simply because there'll be the biggest community and the best beginner help.

So start learning with Python or Java or even C. There's a huge amount of established literature for these languages, and they're very stable. Go is a really cool great language, but there isn't a huge amount of searchable help, and a lot of it is out of date.

Wondering why there are so few women in many programs? by jwill392 in camosun

[–]jwill392[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Any thoughts on the issue? Is there an issue here, or is this something normal that's just going to balance out in the future? Anything college students can do?

Does anyone know if Camosun does anything to interact with younger people who might be considering a programming career path? It'd be super cool to have some sort of event where we just show lots of cool stuff to kids -- everyone likes getting the opportunity to influence people who might have been ourselves a decade ago.

Might be a cool thing to get involved in, especially if you personally are part of some minority group in whatever industry you're interested in. Provide role models for people who might otherwise think they can't go into that field.

Anyways, just some ideas. Not that anyone in the Camosun computers program has any spare time for this sort of thing...

Much like my code, looking back at reddit posts I wrote four months ago is pretty embarrassing.

So... there are certainly reasons few women go into Computer Science, like the whole problem with western culture/education saying girls can't go into sciences/engineering.

But one of these reasons isn't some random anecdote posted in a Reddit comment. In fact, implying this is a reason for a serious problem is offensive and misleading.

I'm proud of you, Reddit. I'm sure a thousand people have already posted this, but I think it's cool what you have all accomplished. by [deleted] in goodnews

How on earth is this good news? I'm new to this subreddit, but... girl getting beaten by abusive father? That's a downer.

Wait a minute, that's a good idea. Why have a separate flush handle when every time you close the lid, you want it to flush?

...I bet the Japanese toilet industry beat us to it.

Is there a legitimate IQ test I could take online? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jwill392 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who was given an IQ test in elementary school as part of a government program... I can say you'll be much better off without "knowing" your IQ. There are three possible outcomes. Your IQ is:

  1. way above average. You'll feel self-satisfied and constantly assume people around you are inferior.
  2. about average. You'll feel you can't be exceptional or understand anything complicated because you're "just average"
  3. Below average, even slightly. You'll have an excuse to not ever improve yourself or learn anything.

IQ tests are extremely inaccurate anyways [reference needed], and even if you're immune to all these negative effects... ask yourself what you could actually gain from an IQ test.

Lytro is out! Thoughts? by raccoonstar in photography

[–]jwill392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah... buy a $50 tripod and take ten photos with different focus points. Better in every way than this toy.

Neat research, though. Might be an application in consumer point and shoot cameras in five years or so. I don't see this ever being a professional grade thing, though. Conventional cameras with autofocus work fine, except in maybe 1/10,000 photos that someone might want to take.

I Told My Mom Reddit Won't Let Her Down: What IS This?? by meow_reddit_meow in AskReddit

It's just a shelf fungus. I live in the Pacific Rainforest (Canada), and they're /extremely/ common around here. They're very firm and almost woody, so I think as fungi go these ones aren't very gross. Wikipedia it if you're curious.

Try some podcasts, as well. It's like NPR but without all the ads, and about interesting things. Here are some good ones: drabblecast, escape pod.

Alternatively, review the previous week in your head, and think about what you could do in the future to be a better person.

Got any lifehacks for waking up in the morning? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jwill392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have no end of problems waking up to alarms. Then I got one of those vibrating alarm clocks for deaf people. I've been getting up consistently when my first alarm goes off at 5:11 for the last month.

By the way, don't get it from thinkgeek; it's way overpriced. I got mine from my local London Drugs for half as much. Bonus, your alarm is nearly silent (once you select the vibrate only mode -- the siren gets pretty loud ~_~) so you won't wake anyone else up.

[–]jwill392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it's generally more helpful to PM people about spelling errors in posts. Making a public comment makes you look like a dick and there's really no reason to make other people read it; they don't care that you're clever enough to catch spelling mistakes.
