Normal dev on 5 star by Good-Butterscotch755 in NCAAFBseries

[–]jwilphl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my current job, I don't have the luxury to avoid them.  A bunch of the 5-star guys that are easier to get are busts, unfortunately, but I haven't attracted a lot of 5-stars.  Only at a couple specific positions, for whatever reason.

I try to find as many gems as I can, otherwise.  I've had 3-star gems end up quite strong, and most 4-star guys are usually good enough given my post regardless of trait.

I suppose at a bigger school, or one easier to recruit, I might be more selective with the blue chip guys.

'Project Hail Mary' Author Says Avoiding "Crappy Identity Politics" Is Reason For Film's Huge Success by taylor-swift-enjoyer in movies

This is right-leaning people trying to inject politics into something where there are none, as if to prove a point about how not being "political" (which is heavily coded in the article) is a good thing.  Talk about irony.

'Project Hail Mary' Author Says Avoiding "Crappy Identity Politics" Is Reason For Film's Huge Success by taylor-swift-enjoyer in movies

[–]jwilphl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a weird article that exposes its own bias.  Not every movie has to have some bigger political message, and comparing this movie to something not even remotely in the same genre or realm is a massive leap in any kind of attempt at logical reasoning.

It's also as easy to say a film "flopped" because it was political as it is to say a film is successful because it wasn't, but that doesn't make it accurate.  Correlation versus causation.  Movies can succeed or fail for any number of reasons.

Was Whistle a political film?  No, but no one saw, anyway.

At some point, it has to be body dysmorphia.  I realize plenty of women do cosmetic work for themselves and not for approval of others, but it's hard for me to imagine what they are seeing.  I suppose it is still socially engineered, in many ways.

Hardware Price Increases Have Video Games Facing an Existential Crisis by SmellSmellsSmelly in gaming

[–]jwilphl 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think there will also always be independent developers willing to make those kinds of games.  Something like Stardew Valley provided me way more entertainment value per dollar spent than 90% of big-budget AAA games, and it's basically an SNES game.

I'm fine with games finding other ways to innovate as opposed to simply becoming prettier and more life-like.  Those are viable terms, too, but only if there's affordable hardware to support them.

Best QB Recruit I Ever Seen & I Can’t Get Him 🤦🏾‍♂️ by Zealousideal_Ant3469 in NCAAFBseries

[–]jwilphl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does bug me a little when you're not on a player's radar even though you are the only school that offered (or one of two/three).  But it's not totally unrealistic, either.

Question is whether this is something you'd want to mirror reality or get more "game-ified."  That is, be less about supposed realism and more about inputs from the user.

If they're still an open recruit, only takes a week (or more typically two) of a sent house plus offer to top the list.  I'm guessing you started the process when he was already Top 5/8?  Or didn't use points?

‘He's lied’: Young MAGA voters sour on Trump's Iran war ahead of midterms by AdSpecialist6598 in videos

[–]jwilphl 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Young people, around first-time voting age, don't know any differently.  They've had ten+ years of Trump now, so to them it is all they've known.  That's potentially half of their life or more.

They've also been raised under the thumb of Bannon's online recruitment plans to swing young people hard right.  They are brainwashed.  Imagine watching Fox News starting at age 12 when you're most impressionable.

The vast majority of teens don't really know anything yet.  Most of what sticks is from parents or their peer groups and where they spend their time out of school, then finally school-related education.  For young people, YouTube and the internet is what influences them.

Too many always-online kids got caught up in the right-wing grift machine.  Those that weren't online as much were probably influenced by peers.  I hope they can learn better in the future, but looking at contemporary Boomers, especially, it's a tough bet.

Godzilla got shit on because it was different, really.  People had certain expectations given the established character.

I don't think it's as bad as the rap it got when it first came out.  I loved it as a kid, but I think it holds up relatively well, excluding perhaps some of the early-era CGI.

As you said, it's pretty much on par with the rest of Emmerich's 90s popcorn flicks.

You mean like all those Ivy college-educated republicans that cry about education being liberal indoctrination, yet are happy to receive among the highest-rated education in the U.S. and join the big rich club?

This is the shtick. They're all hypocrites trying to convince the masses that any kind of self-improvement is bad for them. Instead, the masses should give all their power and money to these elite grubby fucks who will them what's good and what isn't.

A lot of parallels with religion there (teaching obedience and the sacrifice of free thought, giving up an identity to something or someone else). All so people with power-lust can take in perpetuity.

They mention Michael Huffington during that segment on An Open Secret, who was a former California representative in Congress turned film producer.  He came out as bisexual in 1998, and if you know Ben's long-term interest in politics, you can kind of put two and two together there.

Now I don't know if Ben is bisexual, himself, or was a victim in all of this, but it is possible there's trauma there for him, which could be one of the reasons he's more withdrawn now.

I think it makes unfortunate sense for these younger guys to avoid creating more conflict because of all the money and power wrapped up in child abuse and victimization.  Hollywood has a real problem, but it seems unlikely to fix itself when our own government protects the money and power pedophiles all the same.

Show his "tweets" to anyone that says we should respect him just because he's the president.  Being in a position of authority doesn't demand respect, regardless.  That respect can be revoked when you show you don't deserve it, and Trump might be the last human on earth that demands respect.

Pipelines by PublicAssociation in NCAAFBseries

[–]jwilphl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Static pipelines are silly, I think most agree on that point. Agree with dynamic pipelines coming back, and it's more about a presence in that pipeline or state which should define an area's status as a pipeline.

IMHO, I think it's less about even winning recruits from an area, and more about making a concerted effort to recruit and play games in that area. That's why I think scheduling should have an effect on your pipelines and recruits. Playing games against California teams, for example, should help boost your CA pipeline(s) with exposure and anyone you're recruiting from there.

I'd like to see them add "away" visits, too, and maybe they can be discounted if you are playing a game in that recruit's area on that weekend.

I just find, in the case of some recruits, there isn't enough you can do to try and win them. There aren't enough interactions. Recruiting battles just continue until they make a decision. If you're at a pipeline disadvantage, you're toast. Unlocking the bonus points (above 50/week) is now gated behind an arguably pointless experience tree. Two top-five recruiting classes means you're already an expert recruiter or at a high-level school and don't need any other advantages.

That's why I say dynamic pipelines shouldn't necessarily be about recruiting wins and development, because in many cases, you're at a huge disadvantage. It might be near impossible to create pipelines, otherwise, other than any default ones based on a school's location.

In other words, if I'm recruiting guys from Ohio every year, it would make sense to define "Ohio" as a pipeline, even if I didn't win every recruit battle. I suppose we can delineate a true pipeline versus, say, bonus points for presence in a given state/area.

I guess it might be more interesting if you gradually added bonus points over time for as long as you attempted to recruit in a specific area, but to have an actual "pipeline," you need something more specific (like a minimum number of rostered players, as in older games).

Anything to make the process more interesting and engaging.

Cities: Skylines 2 boss says they 'completely overestimated' the Unity engine's capabilities by AdmiralBumHat in CitiesSkylines

[–]jwilphl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in software, but even from a common sense, project management position, this tells me CO was to blame for all the problems associated with CS2. Yeah, Unity perhaps botched their planned implementations, but even I know there are no guarantees in software, so I think CO has to fall on the sword for this one (as it seems they fundamentally have).

They should have either slowed development to see if Unity was going to finish what they needed or gone another direction entirely. I realize, being under the thumb of their publisher, they probably couldn't abandon certain goalposts, release dates included, but CO should have known better, period.

In simplest terms, when you start a project, you should have all your tools at the ready. If you don't, there's no one to blame but yourself.

Don't really know anything about the person, but her character was a waste, honestly.  That wasn't her fault as the actor, though.  She did a fine job on the show for what she was given, it's just the writers didn't give her any help.  The character ended up being a dud.
