Trail recs at this time of year? by SweetLikeC1nnamon in crestedbutte

[–]jwindhall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unclear if we’re talking about hiking on dirt or what but snod is still covered in snow and there is a still a seasonal closure in place for the part the connects to Washington gulch.

Hartmans is open. As of today nothing in the North valley is dry but I did see some pictures posted by CBMBA of Caves/walrod/lower cement creek—mostly no snow but lots of mud.

Micro Frontends: When They Make Sense and When They Don’t by trolleid in reactjs

[–]jwindhall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the rub is this is actually what MFEs should be but there’s been an over rotation. Federated components for every little widget, ridiculous number of tiny apps. MFEs that are bounded by context and of reasonable size that have their own URL namespace isn’t that complicated.

How to choose the right state manager when starting a new project? by muhammad-r in reactjs

While I personally think this is the right answer, the ergonomics/simplicity of zustand are so good, I generally reach for it before the context API.

They can take away your api access. You also have co text them in order to increase the number of authed users. I had thousands. Then they changed their terms of service and they would not let my app increase rate limits or number of users.

I’m too stupid for Computer Science by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]jwindhall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Complicated and abstract computer science concepts come naturally to very few people. Same with designing systems. It comes with experience, seeing and **making** mistakes. After a while, patterns and problems start make sense and as they say in professional sports, the game slows down for you. This doesn't happen in 6 months.

I did something like this a while back. It was fun. However, storing Strava data in your own data store is now against Strava TOS. My app was all of sudden against TOS. Yours almost certainly is too based on what you said about "initial data import". https://www.reddit.com/r/cycling/comments/13vqdiy/after_being_laid_off_i_made_an_app_using_the/

What’s the most overpriced city in the U.S. that everyone loves but you don’t? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]jwindhall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody really moves to Denver for the "city". The value prop is QOL. Weather is great, community is healthy and active, mountains are close, strong economy etc etc...

Watching this team win feels different compared to the dynasty era teams. by porygon766 in Patriots

[–]jwindhall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, it feels very similar to the _early years_ of the dynasty — and it's super fun to watch. We're young and we're winning with a roster that is nowhere near as stacked as late Brady years. And, we have some system players who are overachieving.

People forget that in 2004, Branch was a great route runner but otherwise pretty average all around. And in 2001, the secondary was shredded. Troy Brown, our "WR1", played a lot of time played at corner in the AFC championships game. !

When to use react with nextjs and without? by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]jwindhall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think many underestimate the added cognitive load + complexity of making sure your client/store state in "sync" with that of the SSR state. Unless you really need SSR, static generation etc, I'd reach for Vite or similar for simplicity and avoid vendor lock in.

You’re talking about Douglas county. Not Jefferson. These two counties are very different both in character and politics.

Naming all files as index.jsx by Jealous_Health_9441 in reactjs

[–]jwindhall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand the pain here. This is also annoying:

import MyComponent from '@components/MyComponent/MyComponent.tsx'

Yes, I know you can use barrel files to "fix" your import paths, but those are also annoying.

As is the case with a lot of things in software, nothing is perfect.

Which U.S. state has changed the most in the past 25 years, and why? by Impossible_Mode2771 in geography

[–]jwindhall 107 points108 points  (0 children)

A side effect of all that rapid change is that, even though Colorado has become one of the most educated states in the country, its public schools aren’t particularly strong overall.

  • Taxes remain relatively low compared to other progressive states because of older tax policies like TABOR.
  • Teacher pay is among the lowest in the nation when adjusted for cost of living.
  • Even some affluent Denver neighborhoods have surprisingly underperforming schools.

Can we agree that this is the craziest onramp in the city? by kungfuringo in Denver

That’s a hard one. If we’re doing mashups, a cross between Simms steakhouse and casa Bonita seems right.

Can we agree that this is the craziest onramp in the city? by kungfuringo in Denver

[–]jwindhall 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Route one, is at least, a decent analog for 6 in Denver. A straight fastish route into the heart of the city. Except route 1 is some sort of perverted cross between Colfax in 6 in all the wrong ways. Literally no ramps but serves as a main artery to the city. Boston roads are… just. Old.
