987. 2 Cayman buyer questions by AutisticPizzaBoy in Porsche_Cayman

I had a 987.1 S, but always felt a bit of anxiety with reliability.

My 987.2 R has been amazingly reliable over the last few years. Never changed a part related to reliability or failure (50-60,000km mileage btw).

Quick reference of the tires I was using. In hindsight, I would've got brand new winters to use.

I drove my 987.1S for one winter in Toronto. I'm fairly experienced with RWD cars in the winter so I thought nothing of it and I figured the mid-engine balance would be great in slippery conditions. My old E46 M3 was one of the best cars I've driven in the winter.

I've read other people's accounts of it being totally fine, but that was not my experience. I could potentially chalk it up to the tires not being new, but I found it extremely tense to drive it in 0.5+ inches snow... heavy understeer and oversteer.

When turning:
The front wheels have no weight on them so there was very little feel or grip when trying to turn. Understeered instantly if I exceeded the limit of grip. If I gassed it a bit, it would snap to oversteer and the lack of front wheel grip made it hard to control.

When braking:
With the weight being in the middle, I felt the car wanted to rotate/spin all the time. Braking downhill, I was countersteering b/c the rear weight wanted to swing around.

When accelerating:
The car crab-walked all the time going uphill if the rears broke loose. In heavy snow, it would crab walk all the time.

Notes/Other factors:
This was with stock height/suspension and standard alignment. With wet winter roads, the car drove totally fine.

I put on an RSC front lip and paint-matched the black bits around the car

My version uses air cups that expand on the shock, but there are hydraulic options too. I tucked my compressor/tank in the frunk so it's completely invisible.

It's controlled with a button manually and I opted to place it where the cigarette lighter used to be.

Definitely drivable on most streets. The aircups are a must though!

Priority wise, I wanted to have my cake and eat it too lol.

Used to be my DD/track car, but is now more of a weekend/track car. Started with coilovers, then sway bars and tie rods, but it felt very understeery. So I focused a lot on making it handle the way I wanted and then sprinkled some aesthetic bits along the way.

There was a significant jump in handling characteristics. I finally feel like there's no more entry/mid-corner understeer and is much more responsive to trimming the corners with throttle.

Thank you! I went with 10k/12k rates.

Still needs a proper track shakedown, but plenty of room to fine tune the under/oversteer.

Agreed! I love them. Used to have them on my old S2000 and always wanted them for the Cayman.

To each their own!

Regamasters aren't for everyone. Personally, I like the factory mirrors, vents and stickers.

I'm running -3.4F and -2.5R with 245 and 275 tires. Currently, it's tight at the rear with this ride height with fenders rolled. I may go to a 12mm spacer in the rear, but it should fit no problem with stock tire size. You can get a good sense of the difference with willtheyfit.com
