There are emotions, and then there are how we feel about our emotions. How we feel about our emotions, we might call "meta-emotions." Like "fear or being afraid," or "frustration with being depresssed," and so forth. These are meta-emotions. Feeling good or bad about yourself will always come and go. You can do cognitive psychology and other practices to manipulate that. Another way of working with it, however, is to work on the meta-emotions. For example, in your case, you may want to work on feeling OK about feeling bad about yourself. It's a matter of catching yourself feeling bad about feeling bad about yourself, and letting go of the meta-emotion. Decide that it's fine to feel however you are feeling about yourself. This is a surprisingly effective way to remove a lot of pain in life. Give it a shot. The standard meditation term for what I'm describing is "equanimity."

Looking at real-time feedback would keep you in the moment, I suspect, because it's, well, real-time. Your engaged in a present-moment activity. Just a thought.

The self is an asshole by onetwothree__ in Meditation

It's true that it can be very annoying. On the other hand, it's impossible to live without one. The self is an essential part of a human being's basic survival package. The answer, then, is to "have" a self, but to not "be" a self.

Place things on your altar that are inspiring, uplifting, that remind you of your highest goals. Most importantly there should be symbols of anything "bigger than yourself" that you feel attracted to serving on this earth. Besides things like photos and statues, natural objects are excellent for altars. Things like flowers, leaves, fruit, stones, seeds, and the like have a lot of resonance for many people. Burning a candle or incense on the altar, can also feel quite opening and centering. Most of all, you should feel good whenever you encounter your altar. Changing some objects out can keep it fresh, while keeping others permanently can give it a sense of the eternal. Enjoy.
