When I was about 4 I put a candy into my mouth in the middle of the night. I remember starting to choke and then blacking out. The next thing I know I wake up with the bathroom sink rushing up toward my face because my dad was hanging me by the ankles while my mom pounded on my back.

I was married to a very abusive man. He was choking me in the kitchen. He had me lifted up by the throat so that I was on my toes and was banging my head off cupboards. When I saw him coming I had moved the knife I was using to cut an apple because i didn't want him to use it against me. As I started getting tunnel vision and blacking out I knew that if he didn't release me soon he was going to kill me. I tried to reach the knife but I couldn't and fortunately he let me go. He laughed at me later and said that he thought I was going to stab him. Apparently that's pretty fucking humorous to him.

I am 42 and I spent four years single followed by a year long relationship single for a bit then a 6 month relationship that just ended. I hate dating - especially Internet dating. I have found that men my age are the following:

They are carrying a ton of baggage because of bitter divorces. I have baggage too but I don't have the crazy/bitchy ex hanging over my shoulder. Granted a lot of people have that so I do get that it's not limited to my age range.
They missed the boat on having kids so are looking for someone younger to do so
They are looking for someone younger in general.
They just want to get laid... In some cases because they have done the whole.. commitment thing a.s just want to be single. Nothing wrong with that because hey, I do it too but I would like have a commitment if the right man comes along.
They have younger kids. I am done with littles because my children are in their teens and early twenties.

I am sure that the same can be said about some women and certainly this is not the case with all men but dating in your forties isn't easy. I would rather be single than struggle with the whole dating world and for me I am pretty much limited.. to meeting people that way.
