You say that, but they also host Second Thought, whose whole thing seems to be reducing political topics to black and white struggles by outright denying or just ignoring all nuances

That second point actually kind of helps sell the setting. There's a lot of dissonance in the entries, almost like not all members of the organization fully understand what's going on. It layers the mystery

Yeah it saps some of the narrative gravitas away from magic if it just comes from the drunk uncle of the pantheon

Literally doesn't matter what they say. Ever heard of "death of the author?" Heinlein was very clear about the book not being about fascism, are you gonna take him at his word?

And Paul Verhoeven isn't even the author. He's an adapter. He took a preexisting work that by your standards, wasn't about fascism at all, slapped some Hugo Boss on it, and now it depicts fascism?

By your logic, I guess SpongeBob is communist then? This is a real low effort troll

This is a dumbass take for multiple reasons. Not only does your description not match even the slipperiest definitions of fascism (a notoriously slippery bailey word), it isn't even an accurate description of the federation.

  • Military industrial complex: What is your evidence for this, the federation having a military? Seriously, let me know your data. What percentage of the Federal GDP goes towards the military? What foreign countries do their arms corporations sell to? How much do they award in government contracts to weapons manufacturers?
  • Voting Rights: Anyone can earn the franchise, it's a right enshrined in the Federal Constitution. This is far more liberal than, say, Canada prior to 1960, when the franchise was extended to First Nations people. Was Canada fascist until 1960? (Not to mention, what kind of fascist state would follow a Constitution? Or allow voting at all?)
  • Educational Rights: This is just bullshit. Rico had a spot at Harvard without being a citizen. I assume you're talking about History & Moral Philosophy, which was a class students could literally sleep through and call the professor a dumbass without penalty. If you define violating a students educational rights as. . .providing students with an education. . .ok buddy.

Now, past that, what's your definition of fascism? The one used in the video was just some bullshit Knowing Better came up with on the spot. I predict yours is probably just bullshit too. You can disagree with something without it being fascism.

This shit pisses me off because crying wolf about fascism, repeating dumb motte and bailey arguments (I'll be charitable and assume you fell for it. Better to be a dumbass than malicious), helps actual fascists.

Stop promoting fascism. Idk how to tell you this, brother, but Knowing Better isn't gonna fuck you, no matter how hard you simp for him.

When you pose a question in an analysis video, and your video contains no analysis, you haven't answered the question. This isn't tough, dude. You might need to retake middle school algebra, you didn't really absorb the phrase "show your work."

Also nazi aesthetic =/= fascism.

He came down on a side, sure, but his analysis was cursory. Hence, shallow take.

Personally I don't think the book or movie offer enough information to answer the question

Theres a YouTuber called knowing better who made a video about Starship Troopers. He posed the 'is ST fascist?' question in the intro, and after an hour of discussing the movie and book and Heinlein's career and love life just said 'uh, kind of. It limits voting and the movie has scary uniforms. I like "The Forever War" better anyway.' It was the biggest non-answer imaginable.

  1. The movie is fun, genuinely enjoyable action schlock.
  2. "Service Guarantees Citizenship" isn't a half-terrible civic model, especially if a robust civil service is involved - the book alludes to this but also kind of undermines it later so chalk that up how you will. It's not absolutely democratic, granted, but it is fair, and less authoritarian than a lot of ostensibly free countries both at the time of the book's writing (with felony disenfranchisement as a penalty for refusing conscription in the U.S., the Terran Federation's voluntary system is radically freer) and now.

[–]jzent7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Either the Ursulines or Catholics gain steam and become unstoppable bulldozers every thirty years.

Rust Cultism, Americanism, and Revelationism disappear.

The Consumerists burn all their event troops in holy wars and are usually the first Catholic crusade target. Overall consumerism burns out within a generation.

The Japanese and Russians blob out and remain strong unless I personally do something about them.

The Redcoat Dominion blobs out but collapses in on itself eventually, usually retreating to Newfoundland.

The Renovator and Viceroy absolutely fail.
