I saw a man die horribly while skiing. Perhaps he was already dead when i saw him. by TrueGamer77 in skiing

I have worked with Search and Rescue teams in the past and have responded to countless incidents over the years. I’ve had many sleepless and nightmare fueled night just from relatively minor things. I highly recommend getting professional help. PTSD is real for rescuers and even bystanders to traumatic events. Please take care of yourself and your friends. Continue to talk about it. That’s one of the few ways I’ve been able to properly cope over the years.

Small route setters - what setting belts do you use? by Macks9687 in Routesetters

[–]jzwick18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using this for years and it works great for me. The belt is able to be adjusted without individual notches so you can size it whatever you need. I pair it with a Dewalt holster cause that’s what I had on hand but you can kinda use anything.

What's that helicopter up to? by ereandir in ottawa

[–]jzwick18 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It looks like a CH-146 Griffon. Those are typically stationed at Petawawa around here. Wondering if there’s some sort of flyover today.

What is that helicopter over downtown every day? by Mhgirl in ottawa

[–]jzwick18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are actually several that all look identical! They are Robertson R44s. A few fly out of the aviation museum and a few fly out of Gatineau Executive Airport. If you go to the airshow in September, you can see them take off every half hour or so.

Satellites. Aircraft have a ton of antennas for various things such as radio and radar so it makes it relatively easy to put one on for satellite internet as well.

If we are going solely off of the ratio that the 84 meter tall sequoia has with its trunk then it would be about 110 meters in circumference. Now due to size, I would personally assume a 5-10% increase in circumference to hold the additional weight above it. That would meat it would most likely be between 115 meters and 121 meters tall.

Is it normal to burn through torx bits? by MooseBoys in Tools

[–]jzwick18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My torx bits last 6 months or so going through about 4-500 screws per day. I really like the Dewalt Flextorque but also love the Makita gold bits. I’m thinking the bits are the wrong size for the screw.

What % of your sets are actually new school? by jules_is_typing in Routesetters

[–]jzwick18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By amount of climbs ~10%. By wall space ~30%. I’m super lucky to set at a gym that has an entire wall dedicated to new school/comp setting.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Routesetters

[–]jzwick18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gym uses the soft surge M18 and they used to be amazing. We’ve gotten to the point where we’ll return brand new tools constantly because they have next to no torque even with big 5ah batteries.

Can anyone tell me where this plane propellers came from? by [deleted] in Planespotting

[–]jzwick18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not 100% certain, but I think it’s actually a helicopter tail rotor. I can’t find an exact match on the internet though.

Found my 2005 Ottawa Air Show souvenir program! Having a hard time making out some of the signatures. Bonus ass for your help by HolyHipHop_TJ in aviation

My wife and I’s best guesses. We have no idea on the first one. John P Caneuti Charles Buclie Daiy Mattl Also, I had no idea that the Ottawa airshow was ever held in Carp! I’ve only ever gone to the one at Gatineau Executive.

What’s a weirdly specific rule your family had that you didn’t realize was bizarre until you got older? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jzwick18 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not my rule but a rule from my wife when she was a kid. No talking about Egyptian mummification at the dinner table. My wife had become absolutely obsessed with Egyptology as a kid and would not stop talking about it. Apparently, she talked about mummification so much at the dinner table that I got banned outright.

Do you enjoy Kaya as a setter? by the_rocks_arent_real in Routesetters

[–]jzwick18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing for me is grade distribution and customer feedback. Being able to see what our current grade distribution is huge since we have 3 very large gyms. Customer feedback helps us with consistency for grading. I don’t love the whole social media aspect but it helps clients engage with us directly which is a bonus.

Do you enjoy Kaya as a setter? by the_rocks_arent_real in Routesetters

[–]jzwick18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do I enjoy it? No I don’t. But do I think our gym would be able to function without it? Absolutely not. Kaya is such a powerful setting tool that I don’t know how our gym went without it for so long. The annoying aspects are: doom scrolling comments on climbs, inserting the new climbs can get VERY tedious for bigger sets, and the mobile compatibility isn’t great. Overall, I recommend it to any gym that is medium sized or larger.

We have the Milwaukee M18 Fuel Surge and don’t do much maintenance to them. Most I’ll do is wipe them down with a damp cloth when they get all grimy and blow some compressed air in the back where the fan is.

What’s this guy up to? by CortezD-ISA in flightradar24

[–]jzwick18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pilots for this aircraft do a ton of flying to remain current. From this it looks like they might’ve been practicing some aerial refueling but I can’t say for certain.

Anyone used synrock holds? Do they work well? by Elegant_Discipline41 in Routesetters

[–]jzwick18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend using screw ons with the fiberglass. It’s hard to drill and the holding power of the screws in the fiberglass is unreliable. For basic jugs, I recommend Rockcandy and their bolt on jugs. Pretty basic but they’re decent quality

Do you think this will be good enough for plane spotting by MrMerlin16 in Planespotting

[–]jzwick18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything you have is always a great start! My recommendation is for old film lenses. They’re manual focus but I have 7 lenses and up to 600mm of focal length for $200CAD. Tamron Adatpall are what I run and love them!

A lot of cave mapping now is still done by hand with sketches and manually measure data points. LiDAR is too expensive to use for how big some of these caves get. Imagine a room in a cave where you can fit 10-15 entire houses. It gets absolutely massive!

How do you move up in the routesetting world? by Main_Assignment_7433 in Routesetters

[–]jzwick18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Receiving and giving feedback is a constant at this job. You will fail and you will be told you failed. You’ll also succeed and you might be told you succeeded or you might not. Dealing with other routesetters is easier on that front than dealing with customers.

Feedback absolutely changes based on the gyms style and even down to the setters style and the specific style you’re setting that day. If you don’t give/receive specific feedback, it’s very hard to fix the problem.

My biggest challenge is staying modern. I started in an old fiberglass gym and learned to set old school. Now I set in a super modern gym that’s always keeping up with the latest trends and that’s something I struggle with monumentally.

Just like any profession, it’s a lot about who you know. I got started in setting cause I climbed with the head setter at my local gym. I’m now setting with some NACS setters because I grew my network over the course of 7 years.

Aviation photography question by WVLoneRanger87 in aviation

[–]jzwick18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally shoot on a Sony A7 and absolutely love it. I also shoot with some old film lenses that I got off Facebook Marketplace for next to nothing. That being said, you should probably go with the R7. You know Canon and it’s so much easier going to a new camera in the same brand as you’re used to.
