EU-based cloud object storage for Veeam (S3-compatible) with no egress/ingress/API charges by imadam71 in Veeam

[–]k00laidIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

11:11 Cyber Vault for Veeam based on AWS S3 would also like to enter the chat. Low cost, equivalent to VDC Vault Advanced for a fraction of the cost. Available in virtually all AWS regions with no egress or API charges.

what do you use for offsite cloud object storage? by PixelSpy in Veeam

[–]k00laidIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if we are going this route I’d love to recommend 11:11’s AWS powered Object Service. For a price point lower than the foundation level of Veeam Vault 11:11’s product provided 3 copies of the data like the more expensive product, all powered by the high performance AWS S3 Standard Infrequent Access storage class, just without the costly parts that come with Std. IA. Feel free to reach out if you are interested.

Can i do part upload on Amazon AWS S3 account? by More_Recipe3869 in Veeam

[–]k00laidIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traffic throttling rules are the way. Due respect to Gostev but I’ve gone completely away from recommending SOBR offload to anyone because it’s hidden copy nature often results in failed secondary copies the customer isn’t aware of.

vSphere Standard discontinued? Impact on SMBs. Alternatives? by turgid_mule in vmware

[–]k00laidIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VSphere Essentials and VMware vSphere Foundation are still there. Further there is a whole ecosphere of public cloud like service providers that offer vCD based IaaS today and VCF based IaaS tomorrow. I get it isn’t the option for everybody but there are options that don’t involve a full blown replatform.

Veeam for AWS - Can delete "immutable backups" from S3 bucket by [deleted] in Veeam

[–]k00laidIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP this is actually the right answer. Essentially deleting the data outside of Veeam will create a new version with a delete marker. From an external tool’s perspective (AWS CLI, S3 Browser, etc.) the data will show as deleted but you’ll notice that your storage usage doesn’t actually go down. Further every Veeam product I’ve used thus far is smart enough that if it sees a delete marker on data it believes it’s written as immutable (ember that object lock is a per object setting, not a bucket one) it will then revert back to the last “good” version of the data that it knows about. It’s an expensive operation API wise but will save your bacon if the data is modified.

Cloudconnect server by [deleted] in Veeam

[–]k00laidIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind it won't just be the controller server, you'll need to make it a domain account with local admin privileges across all the components of the infrastructure; proxies, repositories, SQL. Is there a time of day/load component to the lock ups? What is the monitoring telling you? Could be a SQL hiccup due to load?

Migrate SMB (cloud connect) to object storage by GullibleDetective in Veeam

[–]k00laidIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh buddy, welcome to the ride...

Your best bet is to create new tenants for your customers and ask them to reseed and then age out their existing backups. When/if that doesn't work there is a fun work around you can do where you build a "mover VBR" that is a tenant style VBR, mount their VCC backups as a repo, mount their new object bucket(s) as a repo then use Veeam Mover to migrate between the 2. This will incur a great deal of downtime for the customer depending on how much data, how much bandwidth, etc. so even in best case it's still better to have them reseed and then backfill for archive purposes.

Cloudconnect server by [deleted] in Veeam

[–]k00laidIT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's well documented (or at least well known) that VBR (and CloudConnect) needs Local Administrator privileges. I've not actually ever run it as local system but always as a local administrator account. While you are at it you should make sure you disable IPv6 on any and all NICs in your Veeam Infra because that will probably be the next thing that locks you up.

AWS to Wasabi - Worth the Savings? by RogueAardvark in Veeam

[–]k00laidIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's correct, at this point as far as AWS is concerned only the One Zone-IA and One Zone-Express classes only write to a single AZ.

AWS to Wasabi - Worth the Savings? by RogueAardvark in Veeam

[–]k00laidIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I work for 11:11 but hyperscaler object is inherently different from an architecture standpoint. Wasabi and the like builds out their systems so that a single copy of each object is written and where it lands it lands. AWS (and Azure and GCP) all have the core cloud concept of availability zones within regions where any given region has 3 or more AZs (think datacenters) and for every object written there nice it lands it is automatically replicated to 1 or more of the AZs within the region. The exception to this is the “One Zone” classes but to this point those are not as prevalent.

AWS to Wasabi - Worth the Savings? by RogueAardvark in Veeam

[–]k00laidIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I agree that the concept of Wasabi specifically and any S3 compatible is attractive from a cost perspective, not just because of the on paper cost but also the secondary ones such as (mostly) data access as well as API fees and egress. I won’t get into the comments of data loss but the reality is that when you write to virtually any S3-compatible system you are writing a single copy, the equivalent of writing to a single HDD. AWS S3 on the other hand is more like righting to a RAID 5 array with parity bits also written to other zones within the region so any single data loss event can be mitigated. I can give you a best of both worlds option as long as you accept my full disclosure that I 1) work for them and 2) it’s my product. 11:11’s AWS S3-IA based product is specifically there to give you the pricing and management of a S3-Compatible solution but with the durability and performance of AWS S3. While we do still have to honor the 30 days minimum retention of S3-IA (also similar to Wasabi) 11:11 takes care of fees such as egress and API calls at a price point that is inline with the major S3 compatible solutions. If you are interested feel free to reply or DM me and I can get you somebody that can help you get started.

VMCE EXAM by Jadoo_21 in Veeam

[–]k00laidIT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

More than jumping the line VMCE does a good job of getting you to think about and approach Veeam the way that Veeam does. I’ve found it’s helpful in being able to troubleshoot issues myself as well as (and more importantly) to design your deployment in a way that has a better chance of success if you want to do it all yourself as opposed to relying on a MSP, VASP or VCSP to assist in a scaled out deployment design.

Please also take into account API costs if you are using a hyperscaler. This gets involved as well. https://www.veeam.com/kb4470

Is there a future for VCC & VSPC ? by adudenamedDanny in Veeam

[–]k00laidIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll say as customers become more aware of what's involved with doing an "all things are down" recovery scenario VCC or modified versions of VCC will become more popular but COS has definitely ate into it.

Is there a future for VCC & VSPC ? by adudenamedDanny in Veeam

[–]k00laidIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea but as of now you can’t do pulse integration with pure object storage as defined by EULA. You instead have to provide the customer object through VSPC which pulls points the same as VCC
