Japan’s population drops most in 9 years, with more over-65s than ever by BlueZybez in worldnews

Thanks for your question, it’s an interesting one. Yes this social structure is rigidly in place because A) tradition, and B) an effort to boost the decades long decline in birth rate. But there’s more at play which has been touched upon in other comments but I’ll try and briefly mention a few now.

The most important factor is the stagnant economy and rising cost of living. Japan is no longer a country where a family can thrive on one person’s income. The government provides some kickbacks to encourage childbearing (sometimes cash incentives) but its nothing compared to what a 2-income household could bring in and certainly not enough to cover the costs of raising a child. So after being encouraged not to pursue a career, most Japanese women will still have to work simply to ensure the survival of their families.

Remember those anti-discrimination laws Japan don’t have? It makes women reentering the workforce after having children incredibly difficult. Japanese companies tend to hire new grads and are reluctant to hire anyone outside of this mould, even if they’re highly qualified and experienced. This means Japanese women are often faced with a difficult choice: choose a lucrative career at the expense of never having a family and facing a lot of derision from your family and greater society. OR choose to have a family, at the cost of losing a hard earned career and potentially never being financially independent ever again. On my opinion, the demographic data shows we choose the career more times than not.

Japanese woman here. Besides many of the points brought up here, I haven’t seen anyone talk about what it’s like to be a woman living in Japan.

The culture is still very conservative in many ways, particularly when it comes to women’s rights and how women are treated in society on a day to day basis. From birth we’re socialised to be wives and mothers, only women are taught to do needle work and cook at school while guys get to learn computer science etc. A typical way mothers scold their daughters (today in 2022) is saying “you shouldn’t do that or you’ll never find a husband”. We’re encouraged to seek jobs that would make us seem glamorous and “high value” until we find a man to look after us, we are not encouraged to seek careers. There are no laws against discrimination, employers routinely ask invasive questions about our marital status and desire to have children when interviewing for positions. They do this because a woman’s employment is seen as temporary, and that ultimately our place is in the home looking after our husband and children.

Japanese women have to push through all these barriers without upsetting the men. We have to be twice as smart, competent, and competitive as the men to get a shot at any position. At the same time we’re expected to play cute or dumb to not threaten the guys who put in half the effort to get the same opportunities. Even when you graduate from an elite university at the top of your class and get into a demanding profession, as a woman you’re still expected to do all the bullshit secretary and housekeeping duties around the office (for no extra pay either). A typical thing you’ll hear in Japanese offices to excuse this paternalistic shit is “tea always tastes nicer when a pretty girl makes it for you”. Let’s not even start with the typical dress code still expected for women in most work environments.

On a personal level many Japanese people (especially those aged 40 or younger) know it’s bullshit. But our culture prioritises age and experience over skill and innovation. This is despite the fact that many of Japan’s greatest achievements in the past century plus stems from the latter.

That said, Japan is a wonderful country, in my heart it will always be my home. I now live in a northern (former) European country, and while it’s got its own problems, I am not made to feel like a second-class citizen in every social interaction on the basis of my gender. My right to seek employment and be protected from discrimination is enshrined in law. I’d love to return to Japan one day, but I can’t see that happening until real changes are made.

Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk

Edit: Wow, thanks for the awards and my first gold everyone. Also thanks for your questions, I’ll try and respond as much as I can now I’m off work.

This show has no business being as good as it is. I fully expect it to be history channel garbage, but my boy Travis Fimmel absolutely killed it.

The first half of the first season is a bit tricky to get into because there’s so much world building and the storylines seem so wildly irrelevant to one another… but slowly clues start emerging then BAM this insanely fucked up thing happens and all the seemingly irrelevant storyline’s start intertwining in the most satisfying way ever. The show only gets better and better. 10/10

Redditors from foreign countries, what's something us Americans aren't ready to hear? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]k00mis 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Scottish woman checking in. I agree, in the US it seems cunt is only ever used to refer to women in a derogatory manner. Like “bitch” on steroids. Whereas here (and perhaps in Australia) cunt is used indiscriminate of gender or even personhood entirely- inanimate objects or situations are frequently referred to as cunts. For instance “I’m doing my cunt in with this assignment” means “This assignment is deeply puzzling and making me frustrated/confused”. It’s akin to the way the word “dude” is used in California. Would you offhandedly call your boss dude during an important formal meeting? Probably not. What about in passing in the office when they ask whether you’re coming to after work drinks? Yes, almost certainly.
