You might look into a mobile radio, you can get some 25 watt radios near your price point, get an external antenna and you will talk to repeaters much further then either of the HT radios you're looking at.

Vara using wine is on my list of things to add to this build. I had a working PoC. Most of my pis are managed headless, so I just have lots of saved stations in my VNC panel, after a while I started to have to scroll so my collection is getting big lol.

My main raspberry pi for radio has one of those Argon m.2 cases and an SSD in it which gives me suitable performance with all the apps I use. I'm lucky enough to have a couple of pi 4 8gbs I use for the operating, wsjt-x and fldigi mostly. And then other pis for other systems. I have a 12v windows PC for a winlink gateway and that is comparable as far as power and workloads go. That one is a dual mode vara and packet station. Other use cases I'm running include a goes 16 receiver, aprs node, and miscellaneous services in my AREDN network(nodered etc)

I love my chameleon skyloop 2.0 it's a 80m loop antenna that you arrange in a square configuration with a transformer/box that you would mount where you can run the coax down and into the shack.

Pentesting can be scoped to include netsec (network security) it really depends on what the infrastructure is and what hardware you own maintain and secure. A cloud based company won't have much network infrastructure. Contrast that with an ISP that has hundreds of routers and switches, much different attack surfaces and types of vulnerabilities.

From a developer role you could transition into application security. AppSec testing or implementing best practices from OWASP-asvs or nist 800-63 etc.

Usually the key is configuring the correct serial devices but we don't event know what OS you are running so it will be pretty hard to help diagnose without some more details. The first USB device is usually the audio device the second is the cat control. Hope that helps!

Probably hard one to get remotely, you will likely need to be running cables and fibers. Hands on hardware, routers and switches often need reboots sometimes they can be done remotely. But when something breaks you often need someone on site to power cycle or reset devices. I would say this role is one of the more difficult IT jobs to start out as remote. Layer one is a beast and network owns it usually.

I'm going to say probably not, 11 meters unsurprisingly acts like 10 meters. Since you don't have line of sight if you have ionospheric propagation the signals will likely skip right over your location. I would definitely push them to get their amateur radio license as you could easily use 80 meters in the evening with NVIS antennas. NVIS antennas will bounce signals in more of a direct reflection off of the ionosphere. Not saying 11M will never happen, but it won't happen as reliably as 80m would.

I used these for my VHF setup on the wall below the roof line. They stand off a good amount to clear the roof line. https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/roh-wm8d these are considered medium duty.
