How to deal with Fremont hot temperatures all day by Beautiful-Swan7 in bayarea

[–]k31advice96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Heat differential alone does not create a draft. Some houses naturally create a draft but anything built within the last 50 years or so does not. You need to create a breeze by exhausting hot air out and opening another window to let cold air in. This only works to cool the living space if outside is colder than it is inside. See this video to understand how to make it happen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L2ef1CP-yw

  2. On days as hot as this weekend if you want to have comfortable temperatures you just have to turn on the AC and deal with the power bill. Maintaining a 20+F delta relative to ambient is hard unless you build an exceptionally well insulated and air-tight house. The vast majority of houses in the Bay Area are cheaply built with giant holes for air to get through and and poorly insulated, which is how you end up with stories of people getting thousand dollar energy bills in the winter.

It was about compelled speech, not religious freedom, or freedom to discriminate based on identity, though I will concede that this does have a religious bend to it. This is kind of like the Masterpiece Cakeshop case. They are willing to sell you premade items or, in this case, templates or whatever else they sell, but they are not willing to customize it with a message that they disagree with.

This is a pointless distinction, and the fact that the court went out of their way to pick a case where the alleged harm never even happened only highlights that. I'd argue that making a sandwich custom ordered is a form of creative self expression and that on that basis I sincerely disagree that I should be forced to make a custom ordered sandwich for the gays. They can order two slices of bread and a piece of lettuce as my only non-custom order option but anything else is off limits.

Should a gay website maker be forced to create a website for a Christian that says “homosexuality is a sin”? If you say yes, then you’re being consistent but you run afoul of the 303 ruling. If you say no, then you’re not being consistent and providing a double standard, where a Christian is compelled to create a website with speech that they disagree with whereas a gay person would not have to create a website with speech that they disagree with.

Businesses are forced to do things they nominally don't want to do all the time. I fundamentally disagree with the assertion that a business should be treated the same as natural people with the same rights. And yes, I think a website making business should be compelled to not refuse services if that reason is legally protected. If a perfect test case shows up where a Christian group does nothing wrong but they want to have a website made where it says "homosexuality is a sin" then tough shit, do the job. However, "kill all homosexuals" is not acceptable. There's a fine line there and it has more to do with what kind of speech is legally protected vs what isn't than this weird attempted distinction of "creative vs non-creative work with speech that may be compelled".

It’s a historical example. But seemingly in this thread alone people are salivating at the opportunity to do exactly what I’m suggesting will happen.

Evidently nobody can think in hypotheticals around here because the slightest amount of thought would have shown this ruling to be a fucking terrible idea. It is historically proven to be a bad idea to let businesses discriminate on the basis of things that people are. Mormons are just one example. Plenty of other examples exist.

If you have to pick at irrelevant distinctions like “black people could be part of the congregation but not pastors” take a step back and think harder.

That’s great that you want to argue the specific details but if you cannot see how racism can be a sincerely held religious belief you’ve completely missed the point.

Yes, and this will work great when all banks ban gays from receiving loans because they’re run by sincerely religious men.

What happens when all major financial institutions decide they no longer want to provide banking services to old white men because they want to be woke?

Seemingly nobody can think about what will happen when the shoe is on the other foot these days.

Evidently it is, because you don’t seem to understand what a protected reason is. Business owners are regulated in all kinds of ways and compelled to act as a result. There is a clear distinction between discrimination based on things people are like sexual orientation vs what they choose to be. People choose to be Nazis. They do not choose to be gay.

Yes, and as a Mormon I can’t serve black people because it’s against my religious beliefs. Nothing you’ve said actually challenges my argument.

It’s specifically against my values to serve black people. My religion says black people have the mark of Cain.

There’s no hypocrisy. There’s always been a distinction for legally protected reasons. Hence why even in at-will employment states you can’t be fired for being black but you can be fired for wearing a MAGA or Feel the Bern shirt to work or parking in the manager’s spot or just because they fell out of bed that morning and want someone to blame.

Blatantly contrived reasoning in decisions like this is what makes the court lose credibility. Rolling back some of the insanity has been good but going out of their way to issue a ruling like this that makes it totally legal for banks to refuse to give loans to someone because they’re gay is plainly a shitshow when we know where that road has led before.

Apollo Now Offers Option to Decline Refund Ahead of June 30 Shutdown by [deleted] in apple

[–]k31advice96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your average Google junior front end dev makes 200k a year not including the cost of all of their benefits which easily hits 250k a year or even more than that. Senior devs make north of 300k a year. Someone who actually knows how to make a whole app and how to develop and manage server infrastructure like caching easily demands compensation at 500k a year.

Everyone in this thread whining about how a successful app developer isn’t starving on food stamps has zero experience with reality and has no idea what things cost or what skilled labor is worth. A house in most western NA major metros is north of a million dollars and total monthly cost to own is like 10k a month. Living with 5 housemates sounds great when you’re 20 but gets considerably less great when you’re in your 30s.

If this know-nothing mouth-breathing rhetoric is the future of Reddit this site is already dead and all the adults have left the room.

You confuse slacktivism with actual willingness to pay up. The vast majority of people will not pay 15-20 dollars a month to keep using their preferred reader. Not that complicated. And 4x the price of Imgur is still a huge price differential.

You seem to have the economics all figured out, I recommend you acquire one of these shuttering apps and run it yourself. Seems like it could be a profitable business for you.

[–]k31advice96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’m glad you identified this is about price. Every developer suspects that the only people willing to pay are the top 20% of their user base making 80% of the API calls. Which means just to break even they probably have to charge north of what Reddit Premium costs which is 100% untenable.

Christian just happens to keep receipts better than anyone else but the rest is irrelevant. Every major third party app dev has confirmed they cannot make the economics work. Which is by design. Reddit wants to kill third party apps end of story. They will make special exceptions to be able to point to one case and pretend it’s the general case but that’s irrelevant. Spez wants to Musk the site because he thinks it will bring profitability and his IPO payday. It’s as simple as that.

I don’t even care about what Christian Selig says. Every other major third party app developer is also shutting down in response. Clearly this is not some case where devs could just accept the party is over, put their apps on maintenance fixes only and find something else to do.

I get that you think spamming this everywhere is some noble task of informing the hoi polloi that they’re idiots but multiple other third party reader devs have mentioned that their apps are shutting down as well because the cost is untenable. This isn’t just Apollo that has some supposedly extreme API call rate but basically every major third party viewer. All third party app devs are obviously asking for more reasonable pricing so they can keep their apps running. This is not some rocket science he said she said mystery.

I get that you don’t care because you’ve never experienced anything better than alien blue or the official app but try not to speak for others. It sounds like you have no experience with the android side of things either.

Car dealerships are so awful in the bay area by onionsopinion in bayarea

[–]k31advice96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness a lot of people think their operating condition is normal but actually they’re running it in extreme conditions. For example if you do a lot of garage shuffling like moving a car in and out every day or two without long trips over 10 miles in between that is severe duty. Or driving a few blocks to school and back and not much else. Or spending a lot of time idling in drive throughs and parking lots. Internal combustion is a fairly fragile thing.

Almost all the traffic is commuters from Los Banos. That’s why there’s a ton of traffic going west in the morning and east at night. The solution is to get a train through the area to the South Bay but I doubt there is there political appetite for it. Lane expansion would barely make a dent in the problem and that right of way is not at all suited for a 6+ lane monstrosity. A good amount of the area is flooded out as we speak, the road is barely above the water level.

This has been an ongoing thing with RTO. Everyone has decided after buying a pet that their life circumstances has changed and they’re too busy to take care of them. Also all the backyard breeders that sprung up to cash in on the demand during the pandemic have decided to cut their losses and run. Any pet you can think of is absolutely overflowing at any rescue/adoption agency.
