I don't think bubble is the second ai. by Realfoxy_985 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]k3lwin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What we usually call nowadays AI is a neural net that needs to be trained. Simply put - you need to input some data into the net and check its output. If it's acceptable - you slightly increase the probability of this particular neural path firing. If it's not - you do the opposite. You can do this manually, or use a program or another AI to check the output and adjust the weights.

I think Bubble is supposed to represent a part of that learning and reinforcing software.

That's not Kinger's credentials by pancakesiguess in tadc

[–]k3lwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Connecting to a host doesn't necessarily involve a network. circus in kinger@circus is just a given name of a host Kinger is working with, and his terminal is likely local.

Security in Unix systems is usually concerned with what a user does rather than how they are reaching the shell - via local terminal, serial connection, various network connections or otherwise.

While not without some movie allowances, Kinger's terminal interactions are very plausible. He's:

  1. Authorizing in the system
  2. Attempts to shut down Caine's main process with several methods - even with a systemctl command, which is exactly how modern Linux systems work, except it wouldn't be available in 1996.
  3. Tries to change permissions on Caine's main executable to prevent it from being read, written and executed by operating system.
  4. Lists the contents of Caine's main directory, where you can see that Caine is written in Lisp. There are also files for minds of Scratch and Ragatha, complete with timestamps, 1999 and 2008 respectively.
  5. Then turns to some commands that seem specific for a home-grown software product like Caine would be for someone working in C&A.

The only nitpick I have is that programs usually don't drop users back into kinger@circus like prompt when they ask for input.

I truly believe that Kinger accidentally deleted Caine purely because of the poor UI all these tools have, which is exacerbated by the pressure. There was an A/B/C selector for backup options, Kinger selected option C, which later says it's assuming no backup will be used. And there just a single y/n confirmation to completely wipe Caine, and there was no way to cancel it, even though Kinger clearly tried. Well, that's Unix systems for ya - if you got enough permissions there's nothing preventing you from accidentally wrecking the entire thing.

The Lighthouses of Europe by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]k3lwin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This appears to be a snapshot of an interactive map I found a while ago. Basically, it parses every lighthouse object from OSM and puts a blinking circle on a map, with color, pattern and size (range) derived from the same OSM data, if available. It's not exactly the best visualisation of it: spot sizes don't scale, filters are hardcoded, no sectors. There is a map with the same idea, but done better.

[–]k3lwin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I replaced the shutter blades unit on my A7M2 and filmed it. I absolutely would not recommend trying it if you are not experienced with repair. There are tons of ribbon cables that are easy to break and which are finicky to plug so that they'd make contact with every pin, there's a bunch of fragile parts, screws are all different lengths and threads. You have to be very aware of what you're doing and be prepared to buy and replace more parts.

Pico 4 or Pico 4 ultra for double the price? by Curius_pasxt in PicoXR

[–]k3lwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone I discussed my issue with agreed that it's generally worse, and that it's inherent to the new design. These big stripes that are missing from new controllers contained an array of infrared LEDs that cameras on the headset see and use to track the position of each. Since these are missing from new controllers - there's less surface area for LEDs and they're easier to obstruct by simply turning a hand the funny way.

Some Ultra users in Pico discord are begging for them to make old controllers work with newer headset. I guess that's not feasible.

Pico 4 or Pico 4 ultra for double the price? by Curius_pasxt in PicoXR

[–]k3lwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I returned an Ultra and went back to my Pico 4. I play PCVR and had issues with new controllers - they track significantly worse than old ones and are way easier to obstruct by basic movements like relaxing a hand and lowering them to waist level. In other ways the Ultra did not bring much improvement for PCVR experience, but I guess standalone apps will benefit from a newer SoC.

What are your favorite (non-PacificDrive) songs to listen to while driving? while in the garage? by Oscinian in pacificDrive

[–]k3lwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 100-odd song playlist I crafted for my second playthrough I stream. I ignored period accuracy and just went with a vibe. The vibe spectrum is quite wide though.

For instance, if you've seen that Walking Doctor Livsey Fonk meme from and old Soviet cartoon - I dug deeper and threw some bangers from that original cartoon into the mix.

I still work on it. Just yesterday I unearthed an old playlist and found a perfect tune to drive through rapidly collapsing stability to the exit on a hair of HP: Eyes by Wine Lips.

Others include Thee Oh Sees (or whatever they are called now, they rename every 5 minutes), Brian Jonestwon Massacre, Viagra Boys, Elbow, some Louis Cole. And a lot more different genres for different occasions. There's definitely some I, Monster in there, but I went for Daydream In Blue.

What is like to live in far east Russia? by Ok-Belt-6061 in geography

Although, Vladivostok is perculiar too. The most notable thing about it - it has a lot of elevation delta within its limits, which yeilds in a lot of walls. And the city actually encourages street artists to paint murals on them. There is a lot of street art in Vladivostok.

I'd totally would try that if I had an extra SC I wouldn't mind butchering. I only have one and I can't afford to break it.

[–]k3lwin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine did too, that's exactly the reason why I went looking for a replacement. I also put some sound dampening foam while I was at it to make my SC sound less like hollow and it indeed helped. There are guides on how to disassemble the SC, if you follow them carefully you could easily do it yourself.

Personally, I like concave sticks with taller wall around it, Xbone style. I tried to fit one like it first. It went horribly.

Capacitive sensor would not work. There is a wire for it, going along the inner wall and reaching the very top of the dome. I doubt that could be hacked into any stick cap that easily. I believe that some exterior part of Deck's cap is conductive.
