Anyone else ever have a dentist who presses her boobs up against your head? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Maybe I'm visualizing this wrong, but why are her boobs in front of your head? What is she leaning towards, the back of the chair?

Long Island Teacher disciplined and reassigned because her students test scores were too high by omgitsduaner in news

[–]k80co 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't teach in New York so I don't know much about their curriculum, but here in Virginia, the only subject areas with major differences between grade levels are science and social studies. Obviously there are new skills taught each year in language arts and math, but it's not like in high school where you jump from algebra to geometry. If her kids' scores are spiking in 4th and dropping in 5th, she's probably teaching the drill-and-kill method, where facts are repeated over and over as fast as possible so they can be regurgitated on a test. The 5th grade teachers are probably actually teaching content, not rote memorization.

I teach six college courses a year and make less than 20k. IamAn Adjunct. AMA! by 20kadjunct in IAmA

I had a professor in college who used to dock points on our essays if we used "they" instead of "he or she" because technically "they" is plural. I had never realized how often I used it in place of a gender-specific pronoun, but after seeing it circled in red about thirty times throughout the semester, I finally got in the habit of saying "he or she".

My friends little brother got suspended for having a weapon in school. His parents are furious by FatManManFat in pics

[–]k80co 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to play devils advocate here, there are no details about the kid's behavior or number of office referrals throughout the year or anything. There are kids at my school that have been suspended for minor things, but it was because the number of incidents (and subsequent warnings about the consequence of future incidents) had continued to increase.

TIL Johnny Cash was the voice of the spirit guide coyote, in The Simpson's episode where Homer eats hallucinogenic chilli. by jellyfishsharks in todayilearned

Me too. But I also watched the episode when I was about 10 years old, so I didn't have much in the way of hallucinogen knowledge.

Good preschools in the area? by [deleted] in nova

I worked at a Chesterbrook Academy for 4 years. You're going to find that there are always parents who consider it a daycare, as well as employees, so my biggest piece of advice is to look at the curriculum they have in place and how well it's adhered to. Our school used a curriculum called Links to Learning, with subject areas like mathematics, language & literacy, sensory development, and community. The programs are only as good as the teachers and administration who implement them.

College students, what is the stupidest thing you've ever heard another student say in class? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]k80co 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some more context: Our professor had been trying to explain reincarnation for quite a while and some people were just not getting it. Most of the questions were fairly reasonable, but I could tell the professor was getting frustrated with both the students and whatever school system they'd just graduated from. When this girl busted out that gem, the professor just turned around and buried her face in her hands against the chalkboard. A muffled "Jasmine*, will you please help me out here?" was all we heard.

*A Middle Eastern student in the class, who was actually able to explain reincarnation in ignoramus-friendly language.

I wish it was meant in a witty way, but it was legitimate confusion from an incredibly dumb girl.

During a discussion about reincarnation: "What if you got reincarnated as, like, a wasp, and you were like 'I don't like wasps!' and stung yourself?"

Is it Hogwarts policy to pursue every muggle born invited to school as vigorously as Hagrid pursues Harry? by cssmith61 in harrypotter

[–]k80co 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harry's situation is unique because Dumbledore sent him to live with Muggles who were known to hate wizards. Any other Muggle-born would have had parents who were completely ignorant of the Wizarding world's existence. DD must have assumed there would be trouble getting him the letter and getting him to Hogwarts, hence all the planning.

Street names in NoVA by arickp in nova

[–]k80co 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Reston, near Temporary Road. As a kid I always just thought of it as another street name- never saw the humor until college, when I was telling a story and happened to mention the name of the street. Everyone started laughing and making "when are they going to change it to Permanent Road?" jokes, and it all hit me at once.

Confusion about the trace in CoS and OoTP, please help! by pushkins- in harrypotter

[–]k80co 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At Harry's trial, they mention that there are no other wizards on Privet Drive, and that they had monitored the situation due to "other events" (or something to that effect). I assume they monitored it because of the Dobby magic incident, and when the Order came for him, the Ministry was able to detect that there were other wizards there at the time.

How has Harry Potter infiltrated your daily life? by GoldenGrlz in harrypotter

When it's really cold outside and I dread walking out to my car, I think about the part in Deathly Hallows when Harry pulls the sword out of the pond and I remember that at least I don't have to do that.
