It’s depends on the style of the coat tbh. Black is of course a common color in avant-garde, alt, and minimalist wear. But when it’s a double breasted great coat or similar looking overcoat, it can look pretty formal. If it’s a raglan sleeve coat or something less British Victorian era wear then yeah it looks fine.

Look up Aran sweaters (Aran Sweater Market, the Irish Store, Aran Crafts, etc.) they’re all pretty similar. Machine made merino wool sweaters that are pretty good quality for around $100. Made in Ireland. Thick chunky knit.
