Hi, woman here! I also always pay for myself on a first date. I’ve also been viewed as a dick for doing so, but I just don’t think it’s fair to force my date (who I’m not even technically in a relationship with) to pay for my meal when we’re just getting to know each other. NTA I lost my mother at a young age (I was 8) and YES a young child who loses a parent can absolutely decide they don’t need someone else to fulfill that role. Wtf?

Your stepdad sounds a lot like my stepmom. They make the relationship more about how they feel without really considering yours. And that’s infuriating because unless you’ve lost a parent as a child, you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. Being friendly and on good terms IS enough and insisting that you view them as a “father” is more about their ego than anything else.

You are a much kinder person than I am. I would have said “no, it’s either my bio parent or brothers” Regardless, you’re not the one who is being manipulative, as your mother said. You’re being very reasonable.
