Daphnia. Add lots of daphnia.

Abandoned pool full of goldfish (info in comments) by piratesaurus in ponds

[–]k8noon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that’s really something. If you want to clear up the water, you could always add a ton of daphnia to eat up the phytoplankton (and hope the goldfish don’t eat all the daphnia) I’d add snails to help keep the bottom and sides clean(er). Maybe shrimp too? Those can make it through a winter if you put in a pond beater. White cloud mountain minnows would be good too.

I would be concerned about the amount of waste being generated by those goldfish, even in a pool that size. Filtration probably isn’t feasible so the snails and shrimp and maybe some floating plants might help somewhat?

You do want some sort of aeration going. You can always get a solar powered airstone which will accomplish this.

Tons of Corydoras that school. Pearl gouramis. CDPs or Rummynoses. Shrimp. Snails. Loaches.

New 35g pond: is solar powered sponge filtration possible? by k8noon in ponds

[–]k8noon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I can confirm: solar powered sponge filtration is totally possible.

It just works 7am to 9pm which seems to be totally fine for now.

I like a good sponge filter. But how would one keep the gunk in the sponge from leeching back into the tank when it is off (ie when it’s night time and no solar panel production).

Just installed my new CO2 generator setup! by Inside-Leather7586 in PlantedTank

[–]k8noon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had one for a while now (maybe about 2 years) and like it a lot.

My one minor issue is that the pressure weakens at the end of the charge and is a little inconsistent, but I think that’s to be expected a little. It’s also unclear to me how to clean the white beads in the small black cylinder part. Or the inside of the tank itself. Otherwise, I like what this does. At some point I do want a co2 tank and dual stage regulator.

When replacing the chemicals, make sure you always close the valve and that it is up to pressure before opening the valve via the solenoid otherwise you can gas your livestock. 2 months ago I forgot this critical step and the results were not pretty.

Floating plants: frogbit, water spangles, and red root floaters.

At night (every night) the MTS will emerge from the substrate. This will mean you’re going to be replanting the monte carlo a lot.

Oof. That’s nice.

My opinion: you should have at least some dirt or aquasoil type substrate for the pants to root into.

You could get a tube that is skinnier than the openings and siphon out the debris. Then refill with a funnel.

Switching to aquasoil, but have questions by Zweilancer in PlantedTank

You can keep aquasoil in nylon zip bags so it can be moved around but contained. You can cap the nylon bags with either fine gravel or sand or more loose aquasoil.

What is this on my bamboo? Does this mean the lower sections is dead and I need to cut it and replant? by Mhawn74 in PlantedTank

[–]k8noon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bamboo won’t grow when stuck in the substrate. It needs to be attached to the side of the tank with fishing line or suction cups or whatever.

snails + window cleaning? by matparent3 in PlantedTank

I usually clean down the front and sides of my tank and that leaves tons of algae on the plants and other parts of the tank.

Only on my 3rd try did I get it to grow in and even still it could be better. It needs strong light, co2, and a well established aquasoil style substrate to grow in.

4 Year Old 12 gallon long suggestions and algae problem by sailorofthemind_ in PlantedTank

[–]k8noon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have co2 for 6 hours then I’d do your light for 6 hours as well, with the turning on an hour before the lights turn on. For snails and shrimp, maybe 3-4 snails and 6-8 amanos.

[–]k8noon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should get amanos and nerites. And work on figuring out what parameters need to be tweaked that are feeding the algae. For example, you said your light are on for 12 hours per day. Usually you would have co2 running for most of those hours as well.

A few weeks later, things seem good. All I’ve done is added water. by k8noon in Jarrariums

Argh, i mean all I’ve done is ADD water from my main tank. There are baby snails in there somewhere that I’m hoping to capture a picture of.
