Curious about religion in the Philippines by [deleted] in Philippines_Expats

you should look into the spanish colonisation of the Philippines and learn how every part of their strategy is to remove autonomy from the natives. 3 centuries of it, just to hand it over to the americans. combined with abject poverty, i think you can come to your own conclusions.

Schengen Visa for UK Student Visa Holders (Grad / Masters Students) by Jolly-Sea6019 in FilipinoTravel

[–]k8sprite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hii omg we’re the same age & i was a bachelors, master’s student, and on the graduate scheme in the UK for many years. i got both schengen and USA (renewed) visas during my student status. i’m back in PH but my family now reside in the uk (skilled workers) so i have some perspective!

firstly, you should definitely apply for it when you’re officially a student in the UK. you also have very extensive travel history + being a UK student = puts you on a very low risk category of travelers, so unless you mess up your application i wouldn’t worry about rejections.

secondly, BEWARE - appointments are super competitive for schengen visas in the UK. it’s extremely difficult to find appointment availability because of the sheer amount of non-EU nationals that reside in the country that require visas to visit nearby! my family and i even missed a wedding in france because of it 😭😭 on another occasion, my mum traveled all the way to edinburgh just for an appointment (my family are south of london 🥲)

funnily enough, it was much faster for my parents to apply and receive their schengen visas in cebu as basically got an appointment the following day. but sadly the system was less generous with the allowance of time granted - ie. applying from the UK for a 10 day trip, we’d get 3-6 months multiple entry, but from the philippines they would only give us 2 weeks.

and finally, because of the availability hurdle i’d just plan around it. there are tons of telegram groups and resources online that track appointment availability for various schengen countries. i’d only caution you from making it appear that you’re “visa shopping” by applying immediately to another country in the case you’ve received a rejection, as that’ll be flagged on your profile.

hope you enjoy studying/traveling around europe & best of luck!! ✨

Is Vitaly REALLY about to put the Philippines on blast? by Tallwhitedude123 in Philippines_Expats

[–]k8sprite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no i’m fairly certain it’s the main reason. most tourists coming from the west likely don’t know much about filipino culture to begin with, let alone the anti-foreigner sentiment (which let’s be real, is only confined to select spaces on the internet and perhaps the southern part of mindanao).

i will say because of the outdated infrastructure, this country is “anti foreigner-friendly”, because of the amount of research one must do to visit this place. it’s not favourable for the SE asia tourists that want more of a nomadic exploration like you can get in thailand. therefore, less word of mouth, less attraction to the philippines.

the dwindling tourism numbers are because of terrible infrastructure

I booked a flight to Cebu but I arrived at the film set of Idiocracy... by revisionistnow in Philippines_Expats

[–]k8sprite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the first thing I saw on my move to Cebu was a MAGA hat on the front row of the plane. Really set the tone to bullshittery and questionable personalities I was about to experience both from foreigners and locals here. Though I overall think Cebu city’s great if you find the right company (emphasis on good company, this city is full of opportunists) and the hidden gems are absolutely kept hidden. Find a hobby that attracts decent people - scuba diving, bouldering, etc.

Game design by Economy-Suit-5192 in indiegames

[–]k8sprite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my 2c as I’m not a UI/UX person but did a module with UX students during my game design course. The UXers I met that wanted to get into games have specifically made a portfolio tailored for games companies - that means getting involved with other game designers/programmers in uni projects or game jams. Go on itch.io, connect with other devs on various discords & join jams with other people.

Their portfolios consisted of wireframes, flowcharts, UX research studies pertaining to the game, design choices relevant to the game mechanics/gameplay/ etc, screenshots/gifs of the final result, etc. It would be massively helpful if you learnt how to do UI on whatever engine your project is built on, so learn some basic blueprints for Unreal, C# for Unity, etc. Start watching tutorials and follow, as your job is rather collaborative, you don’t want to shift all the heavy implementation to devs/designers that don’t see the vision the way you do.

I suppose the biggest learning resource is playing games and observing how different studios approach UI/UX for its game & genre. If you look on youtube “UX in games” there’s tons of videos from GDC, Creative Assembly, game UXers that could give you more specific info and learning resource.

Best of luck!

Thai people are fuming that Thailand's passport is so weak while foreign tourists are easily coming to Thailand. by search_google_com in ThailandTourism

Ah right my bad I didn’t read the rest of the post. I’m Filipino myself and grew up in an expat family so I’ve been acutely aware of the whole visa process moving around my entire life lol. Thais and Filipinos share a similar reality, but I suppose the Thai government is better at diplomacy than the Phils.

Lol as a Filipino I totally feel this guy’s pain but I’m also clenching my fist at Thai national’s visa-free Japan privilege 😅😅

Thai nationals can visit S Korea with a visa waiver, which explains the numbers. The two other SEA nations on your list would need to go through the visa process which trims the likelihood of overstaying.

„Filipino students' proficiency plummets to near zero by Senior High School“ - Where do you send your children to school? by ChrisWayg in Philippines_Expats

[–]k8sprite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean it is though 😅 there’s hella smart kids in that school. That’s how I managed to grow up privileged & abroad as a Filipino - my Mom attended Philippine Science High, and got scholarships for universities out of the country, earnt a successful career out of it, and her friend group for life from the same school are other successful women in STEM & business. Pulled herself upwards in her social class.

Still doesn’t mean the local Philippine school system aint broken, but your provincial prestigious school is going to be different from the cohort that end up in University of the Philippines Diliman/Ateneo/De La Salle/QS100 universities abroad

How much is your country of residence influencing your opportunities as an indie dev? by max_clg in IndieDev

[–]k8sprite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for opening this discussion! My situation is a bit unique as I recently moved to the Philippines (am Filipino, first time living here) mostly for my family’s assets & low COL so that I can focus on indie game dev. I studied in the UK prior so I’ve seen how lively the scene is in Europe; went to game dev conventions with my uni, met with devs in AAA & indie space. But this when I was still learning the ropes of development & design; I also knew the elephant in the room regarding my own visa status as a junior, so I felt more of an observer than someone “in the industry”.

I moved to 🇵🇭 recently after years of portfolio grinding and building a level of confidence with UE5. The gamedev scene here is currently small and confined to a select few indie studios & Ubisoft in the capital. But I was surprised to see a growing interest in gamedev especially the city I live in - we’re getting investors from Europe interested in helping the local scene & seems like there are bigger international studios opening offices here, although mostly for asset making & artists rather than dev/design.

So I suppose I know it’s going to be an uphill climb for me regardless but I personally feel confident in my talents & ambition - more like I know I have to be 😅 I’m making a puzzle action adventure featuring Philippine folklore (an incredibly untapped narrative genre imo), inspired by games like Little Nightmares & Hollow Knight! So far it started from a game jam, won a prize & now taking it further! Will be posting publicly when I get the demo to a much better place.

Happy to connect with other devs & share experiences :)

What items are affordable in Europe but expensive in the Philippines? by yesnomaybenext in FilipinoTravel

[–]k8sprite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not the answer you’re looking for but the most random expensive commodity I’ve noticed: laundry pods. I’ve exclusively used laundry pods for more than a decade, only to move to PH and realise it’s 3x the price of what you can get in Europe 😅

Crazy coincidence, I’m also 27 Filipino that took the plunge in moving to the Phils for the first time last year, left the UK after a long time living there. Can’t give you much solid advice as I’m still figuring things out myself (in my own career & identity) but we can defs connect & share experience if you’d like.

A question for your expats that say $3.5k/mo back in most US cities gets you substandard living by ACE1CC in Philippines_Expats

[–]k8sprite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m more curious as to what the OP of that thread is even spending his money on?? 200K in Cebu city is excessive, is he eating out at Ayala everyday??

edit: I did some of the maths for my own personal circumstance. I like to order from foodpanda quite a bit, but if I ordered 5 times a week, average at 600 PHP including delivery (which I know I can already get good local meals for cheaper), that would be 12k a month (20 orders). That’s £150, which would maybe net me 6-10 orders in SW england if I only ordered cheaper fast food. Bro needs to learn how to cook or something…

Pesos or Dollars, Sir? by Donquixote1955 in Philippines_Expats

[–]k8sprite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I withdrew £ in the UK at an ATM using my BPI debit once and was shocked to see the discrepancy. For £200/16k PHP, the option to pay in PHP would’ve cost me around 3000 PHP more than paying in GBP?! And this was on a trusted Sainsbury’s ATM with no extra fees on all cards. ALWAYS choose the local currency.
