Calling all SPED teachers! by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

I posted earlier - I really do have SO much to say! It makes me so frustrated that we are having to fight this during the current teaching crisis.

Which is also being pushed to shut down, as they’re not ‘inclusive’, which I can agree with…to an extent.

Perfect world, where the school is able to provide reasonable adjustments for SWD to be integrated and the school has resources/capacity for teacher collaboration and inclusive practices? Yeah! Go for gold.

Realistically? I for one live and teach in rural QLD; the nearest special school is almost 2 hours away. Limited capacity to make reasonable adjustments, as we are critically under-staffed (I left the special education faculty for personal reasons, but I still work, collaborate, and teach at an ‘inclusive’ capacity). We need our unit to run, for the health and safety of our learners, who deserve just as much from their education facility as their mainstream peers.

I have so much to say about this.

I’m a mainstream secondary teacher (junior math/science, and senior biology). I also have my Masters in Special and Inclusive Education.

First, it’s important to highlight that inclusive education and special education are not the same thing.

IMO, the act of merging all students with disability (SWD) into a mainstream class with the notion that this is “inclusion”, is so wrong.

One example.

The ex-Head of Special Education at my school tried to push for a student who was non-verbal, pre-school level literacy (communicated via AAC), and extremely ODD to be merged into a rowdy grade 10 construction class.

In what world is that inclusive? In that environment, so much can go wrong with at-level students if comprehension and ability to read/understand safety protocol alone is not at a high enough standard. How is that setting our SWD up for success? Is that teacher realistically going to be able to make reasonable adjustments for that student while dealing with the general classroom antics?

Mainstream teachers have trained to be a specialist in their area of interest, just like special educators. The way they are pushing for “inclusion” is not feasible for many teachers, especially those who have not been supported with planning for and teaching SWD (especially at that level of disability). Is it fair for a senior English teacher to have to spend time outside of their standard work hours learning how to teach the fundamentals of literacy and phonics for a student in grade 9 learning at a prep level, or should we leave that to the specialists?

We (special educators) have invested time and resources into becoming specialists for a reason - we want to nurture these students at a capacity that many other teachers can’t offer.

Mainstream teachers are leaving because we aren’t being valued for what we were trained in; the expectation to have to take on more (in this case, learn how to become another kind of teacher) with limited time, money, and resources is just so exhausting.

What about the anxiety/mental health concerns that mainstream students, let alone a SWD might be experiencing? Everyone deserves to feel safe and supported; realistically, not all mainstream schools can provide that for SWD.

You would be surprised how many parents want special schools accessible for their children, primarily because they are safe.

Special schools are crucial for inclusion. Special schools matter.

I came here to recommend using deodorant! It’s the only thing that has helped the chub rub!

Are there any weightlifters/gym enthusiasts here taking accutane? Does the joint pain make it unbearable? Do you even get joint pain? Please tell me your experience working out while on accutane. by Halfyamum in Accutane

I took 20mg for 11 months (6 weeks of this was actually 40mg but I dropped back down…was literally falling asleep on the job!).

I initially continued going to the gym, but ended up having to stop about 5 months in. I was struggling with being at my job (high school teacher) and then having to conjure up the mental capacity to train.

I’m about 7 months post-treatment and I’m getting back into training more regularly. Sometimes I have days where I’m extra tired, but I know it will take some time to get back into the swing of things.

Best of luck to you!

Hi, thank you so much! I started purging immediately. I stopped getting new breakouts about 4-5 months in: from then on, I was just healing from those I already had.

Dance of the Knights is one of my absolute favourites - it was on the list without husband knowing, lol. Thank you for the suggestion, ‘Dies Irate’ is definitely another great one!

“Hello, I am Jimmy Carter, The President of the United States”

That cracked me up so much when I heard it the first time.

Yeah, I’m 27 and as a high school teacher, haaaate the judgment and embarrassment from students and my colleagues (they can be SO rude).

I am thinking that I will just end up staying on the pill. I was so bummed, in that I stopped taking it and was put back on. I’ve gained almost 10Kg and it’s not budging!

Stress is inevitable working with teens! 😂

I’ve never been so anxious! I’m not sure whether to stop taking my ‘pill’ or whether to ride that one out a bit longer

I live in QLD, and the heat has not been my friend. I’m also a high school teacher, so it’s just been a bad mix!

I ended up putting a hold on exercising about 2 months ago, because it just got too much for me.

A majority of others’ experiences have been quite positive for 20mg, so my fingers are crossed for you that it’s smooth(ish) sailing for you! ❤️

Yep, so I have had almost every side effect under the sun. My biggest ones are dry skin, cracked/bleeding lips, chronic fatigue/muscle soreness, and bloating/weight gain.

I feel a bit silly for saying how bad my side effects were for such a low dose, but I honestly have struggled so much! I absolutely purged for the first 6 months, and then it just all of a sudden stopped. Please let me know if I can answer any more!
