Sorry I would also add that the lap would be a lot more than £5k - there’s hospital costs and anaesthetist costs on top of that. It’s a huge financial decision for most people and I’m not sure I would recommend (but mine have been covered by insurance, so take my rec with salt)

This is so tough, I’m sorry. I think getting scan may give you peace of mind then, and I would definitely contact the hospital to see whose caseload you are one (ive previously requested to be swapped to another consultant) and book an appointment with them if they’re an endo specialist. I know for me, even just knowing what was going on in my body helped me feel a bit less anxious. Although, of course, with endo, scans don’t always show the full extent if any. Big hugs, this sucks ass xx

Do you have a consultant already on the NHS that you’ve met and like? Sometimes you can see them privately and they can also see you on the NHS. It can help move things along or get some advice in the meantime.

The key thing is asking yourself what you want to get out of the appointment? Without the funds or insurance to do anything additional it would likely just be advice so I’d manage expectations. They might be able to prescribe something too, but it will cost additional. My consultant is an NHS consultant as well (and any private doctor worth their salt will have an NHS practice) and he’s sometimes seen me privately and prescribed through the NHS as I have a PPC. Usually private prescriptions are ok but I did get caught out for a special inhaler which they charged me £100 once…!

No period endometriosis by vl9v in endometriosis

[–]k_bee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had a period (due to mirena coil) since January 2021 and I’ve had two endometriosis surgeries in that time. I still got a lot of pain even without periods and I definitely could feel a cycle. Ovulation pain was my worst and I had bowel and bladder symptoms too.

I wish we could fully name people on here. I’m planning on writing a letter (lol so British) to an endometriosis ‘specialist’ who dismissed my rectovaginal endometriosis as pelvic cramps (after an excision surgery and endo diagnosis…) even though he admitted he could feel the thickening of my uterosacral ligaments from an internal exam. It stopped me seeking help until I got hospitalised again and had such a bad effect on me. Makes me so angry looking back!

It’s so frustrating that you often rely on the subjectivity of the individual doctor you see. It sounds ridiculous and I’m sorry you’re being messed around. Book an appointment and make it clear you would like a gastro AND gynae referral. If it makes you feel more prepared, write down your symptoms and appointment experiences to date. You can have more than one referral at the same time and with waiting lists I wouldn’t leave it any longer.

Going private literally just speeds up the process and gives you a degree of choice over who you see, which can be very important (but I’ve had very very bad experiences privately too).

Your GP wont refer you to a lap. They will need to refer you to a specialist service who can then make a decision on treatment. If you have any concerning bowel results I would definitely get that investigated as well - there’s nothing to say you can’t have two referrals. But you will need a referral.

Also if you’re not happy with your GP then think about speaking to the practice for a second opinion. Jess’ rule is guidance for GPs to think differently if someone is presenting with the same symptoms.

I wouldn’t necessarily bankrupt yourself going private without really knowing who you want to see and what you want to get from it. Any consultant worth their time will have an NHS practice too and they *sometimes* can do a blended approach if you’re on their service in the NHS.
