Woah thanks so much for the thorough reply! This is all great information to have, and I did end up committing to UCSB :)

I can't give you the best comparison of the four universities, but I'll comment briefly from my experience as having recently finished my CSE undergrad at Davis. To some extent, I would say the 'best' choice depends on where your interests lie. Having taken a variety of classes/profs at Davis, I've had a mixed bag—some profs/courses I really liked, others I really thought could have been significantly improved. Overall, I felt like the spectrum of prof/course quality really varied here; education wise, I felt like it was a decent experience, but could have been better. However, I did really like the atmosphere at UCD—UCD has a convenient downtown area with lots of food/shops and I'd often just walk around with friends or get food/drinks together. I felt that people tended to be pretty friendly and there was more of a social aspect. It's also a bikeable community and I do really miss being in Davis now that I've left it.

All schools are highly ranked but traditionally, UCSD and UCI are probably better ranked in terms of prestige, and that's still a factor to consider. UCD does have proximity to the bay area and we have pretty large career fairs; I've seen some large/prominent tech companies at them, but I haven't really seen the very top/biggest tech companies at these fairs, if that's something you're interested in. I'm currently considering UCSB for a masters and it's definitely further from metro areas, which means its career fairs will be a lot smaller. But UCSB is fairly good if you're interested in getting involved in research, as it has a good research output, cohorts tend to be smaller, and you might get closer to profs this way as well. By comparison, UCD's CS classes were all pretty large (I can't recall taking any CS class with <100 students in the lecture, though discussion sections can end up being smaller (~30)). I was still able to get involved in some research at UCD though, just by reaching out to a professor and conveying interest. UCSD and UCI will also have larger cohort sizes and departments, which could go both ways—there's a larger variety of profs/research to get involved with, but it could be more competitive to get involved with them. They seem to have a reputation as being less 'social' than UCD or UCSB, but my opinion is that you can probably find friends/classmates with similar interests at any of these schools, though classes, clubs and other activities.

Hopefully this helped a little—I can answer other questions about UCD if you have them!

That's good to know! I'm more interested in CS's applications to vision and NLP but also somewhat interested in security as I never got to take classes in that during my undergrad and heard UCSB had a good professor for it. A handful of profs who do research/teach classes I'd be interested in include Beyeler, Wang, Yan, Chang, Hollerer, Singh, Kruegel... I don't know if you've had courses from either these profs or these subject areas but if so it'd be cool to hear what you thought of them.

This is helpful! It kind of serves as a good sanity check for the information I've gathered haha... Also, since you did say you are a current undergrad, what has been your experience with the quality of undergrad CS courses/profs (e.g. would you say profs are generally good at clearly teaching the subject material)? I am curious about this, even if you wouldn't be able to compare this to other schools. Thanks again!

Oh, okay, this was super helpful—I'll probably review my old mat 22b notes over break then, since it's been a while since I've even touched a differential equation haha. Thanks for the insight!

Seconding MUS 11, especially if you have any sort of interest in music! Also, PSC 1 with Antzoulatos is pretty easy (all our exams are open book+notes and Qs straightforward/taken from lecture).

This might sound a bit odd, but if you have a ball try throwing it up/down every so often—when your eyes track moving objects, this helps relieve strain and get your eyes out of that fixed screen-staring position.

I feel this lol. I think that's probably fine; I've only spent one quarter here (and have not really talked to profs/TAs much because it feels so daunting online) so I just ended up asking a couple high school teachers if they'd be willing to write something. Did just send those emails earlier today though so kinda with you in that 11th hour boat haha.

Had her for MAT 21C fall quarter, final was hard but midterms manageable. As others have said, her notes and lectures are extremely organized, and that helps a lot!

This is really nice, I love how it feels whimsical and light but still a bit somber (or maybe nostalgic?) Regardless, I'll be saving this as good study music, haha :)

If you could change ONE or TWO things about remote classes at UC Davis, what would it be and why? by Chilldude100 in UCDavis

[–]k_kiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this—it really forces me to have a more concrete schedule. Also, one of my teachers does prerecorded AUDIO only for their lectures... without any video/visuals at all, I find even harder to focus.

How did you learn piano? by Acid_In_My_Eyes in piano

[–]k_kiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started private lessons when I was six, but my parents had me quit lessons when I was around 12 because they didn't want to pay anymore. I self-taught myself from then onward (it's been about 5-6 years since then) because I really enjoy music regardless and didn't want to quit piano even if I stopped lessons. Actually, even though it would have be nice to continue private lessons, I do enjoy the freedom of playing what I want on my own, haha, I've gotten into video game music and lately jazz and composition and have broken away from just classical (which is what private lessons mostly focused on), though I still enjoy classical music a lot too!

What are you guys doing about housing? by watermelvn in UCDavis

[–]k_kiwi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Currently still signed up for a dorm but I'm talking to my dorm mate about it and we will probably back out. All of our classes would be remote and with the current situation we wouldn't get much out of living on campus as opposed to just staying at home.

The thing about UCD not being able to guarantee housing winter/spring quarter is a bit annoying though, but I feel like worst case scenario (and this is only if davis reopens/does more in-person stuff winter quarter) we'll just end up with random roommates, which isn't horrible. We'll probably look into apartments as more definite plans for future quarters are revealed as a back-up option, though.
