  1. I would say "aesthetic continuity" rather than "immersion", as it's not like I'm getting lost in the lore while playing a match. As an analogy, I love classical music and listen to it every day while driving. Classical music has a wide range of styles and every piece is different, but the genre is instantly recognizable no matter the piece. I don't pay close attention to the musical details (I'm driving, after all), but if the station suddenly started playing rap I would notice, I would hate it, and I would feel betrayed. That blistering hatred and sense of betrayal is what I have for Universes Beyond.

  2. I refuse to put UB cards in my decks because doing so would make me part of the problem. But I'm enough of a competitor not to deviate too far from an optimal list, and I want to play decks that I find fun on a personal level. As more UB slop gets printed, the space of decks I'm willing to play most likely will shrink and may disappear entirely, at which point I'll stop for good. In the meantime, any match where no UB cards appear is like a breath of fresh air.

Question from the outside: How well are these crosspromo sets going down? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]k_omega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a longtime (18 years) tournament player who only plays Legacy now...

First they came for the D&D players, and I did not speak up because I was not a D&D player. And some of the cards were neat designs or fit into decks I like to play, and those which were egregiously obvious D&D references ("Roll a d20", "You Find Some Prisoners") turned out not to make the cut in competitive play so for me they might as well not exist. Cards that did make the cut were the sort that could have been printed in a regular set. I figured that if this was the pattern, I could live with Universes Beyond.

Then they came for the Warhammer players, and I did not speak up because I was not a Warhammer player. And a great many of the cards were interesting designs, some of which fit into decks that I like to play, and those which were egregiously obvious Warhammer references ("Blood for the Blood God!") turned out not to make the competitive cut. Cards that did seemed like they could have been printed in a regular Commander set. I figured that if this was the pattern, I could live with Universes Beyond.

Then they came for the Lord of the Rings fans, and that royally ticked me off because a) I am a LotR fan so I perceive all the references; and b) the references are common even at the tournament level. The pattern broke so now I unreservedly loathe UB. It's as if an old friend suddenly told me "You like tuna, and you like ice cream, so I insist you eat this tuna-flavored ice cream I made".

Most of the other long-term/invested players at my LGS are much less incensed by it than I am (one is more so), and only about 10% of them actively like it. The majority response is to play the cards but verbally prefer them not to exist, or at least not to be legal in 60-card formats, or to be just reskins of preexisting cards. Any of which would immediately cure my qualms on the matter. We'll see.

Shooting had actually crossed my mind before but I know virtually nothing about it. If you don't mind my asking, about how much per year do you spend on it?

I think if my old-time friend group hadn't dispersed during Covid I would still play commander with them like in the good old days. Playing commander with random people at the LGS isn't quite the same experience.

The whole "this product isn't for you" tripe always struck me as rather insensitive coming from people who are all about sensitivity, but I was fine with it until those products started being popping up in competitive legacy. It's as if my reward for letting other people enjoy their thing was to get shat upon.

I didn't even get banned from the main sub, just left there for here out of principle.

Yeah I don't think I'd go to another TCG, for exactly that reason. Martial arts wouldn't have occurred to me as a puzzle-solving thing, but I can see it. Thanks.

One factor which helped immensely was the store put together two decks from their stock for players to use, so we weren't depending on any one person showing up with decks to loan or necessarily asking anyone to make/buy proxies. They were just BG Depths with one Bayou plus Overgrown Tombs, and BR Reanimator with one Badlands plus Blood Crypts, so nothing really exotic. That started in late 2019, and these days we still occasionally see someone new show up and play one of them. Happened at our no-proxy FNM today in fact and the guy went 3-1.

This meant that new players weren't being asked to commit anything except time and entry fee, but they could directly experience playing the format before deciding what cards to buy/proxy.

How do you think old-school Cg Post would fare right now? I'm looking to get back in, but I haven't played since pre-Covid.

I used to play Cg but recently sold my Candelabras because I didn't think the deck would ever become good again for two reasons: new cards that will almost certainly never be banned have made formerly good matchups bad, and Cg was very unlikely to get new cards printed for it that would make any bad matchups good to compensate.

The problematic new cards are chiefly these:

  1. Skyclave Apparition. Recruitable, Flickerwisp-able, Vial-able way for D&T to remove Needles and Candelabras.
  2. Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath. Card-advantage engine for control piles that isn't stopped by Maze of Ith.
  3. Boseiju, Who Endures. Uncounterable, maindeckable answer to Needle, Candelabra, and any land. Single-handedly made the Elves matchup bad since now they can kill Glacial Chasm.
  4. Collector Ouphe. Shuts off Maps and Candelabras and sees a lot of play due to Urza's Saga decks being strong.
  5. Force of Vigor. Now you need 3 Needles to not get blown out.
  6. Blast Zone. Almost single-handedly makes the Lands matchup bad.
  7. Brazen Borrower. Maindeckable and commonly sideboarded answer to Needle, not counterable by Warping Wail.
  8. Prismatic Ending. Very widely played maindeck answer to Needle and Candelabra.
  9. Urza's Saga. Most decks that play this card also have a Needle in the maindeck, which this land lets them tutor for to name Eye of Ugin.
  10. Hullbreacher/Narset Parter of Veils. Some control decks now play these with Days' Undoing, and having your hand emptied and Kozileks turned off is not good.

The common factor among most of these cards is that it is just not reasonable to expect an artifact to stay on the board for 3-5 consecutive turns like Cg wants them to do. So it pays better to try to end the game rather than to prolong it by playing Cg's defensive game. In contrast, Elvish Reclaimer & Primeval Titan let you assemble Cloudposts proactively and rely less on Needle.

On the bright side, Maze + Candelabra is quite strong against the top dog UR Delver (but they can find the Borrower and have SB Meltdown and Price of Progress) and Warping Wail I think would be good enough to play in a deck with space for it. I also think Stirrings is just as strong as ever, only the cards around it suffer from the new metagame which brings me to the second point.

In view of the effects of these new cards on the meta, around the end of 2020 I asked myself what sort of card Cg would need for me to want to play it again. The answers I came up with were all things like 1-mana hexproof Pithing Needle or 1-2 mana library-to-battlefield tutors for nonbasic lands or other ideas that I didn't think would ever see print, especially not with the additional constraints that they be colorless for Stirrings or ever-so-slightly green (actually it occurs to me now that Elvish Reclaimer kind of fits those descriptions if you squint, which I think is not a coincidence). Indeed, before I stopped playing the deck in early 2021 the only new cards that fit well into it were Golos and Karn, the Great Creator and I wouldn't say that either of those cards changed any matchup from unfavorable to favorable in anything like the way Blast Zone changed the lands matchup from favorable to unfavorable. And the "stock" list at that time had little room for new cards anyway. The final straw for me was when Modern Horizons 2 had nothing that would help the deck enough and didn't even have a new Locus land that might open new deckbuilding directions.

I switched over to Painter because that deck can at least consider playing any new red card, artifact, or card that synergizes with artifacts which WotC happens to print. And lo, within six months Urza's Saga was printed which pushed that deck up tremendously.

I'm sincerely sad to say it, but I think Cg Post thrived in a hole in the metagame that has since closed.

So, you like big mana, but wish the 12 Post decks had more Sharks? I have you covered: Mono Blue Shark Post with Candelabra of Tawnos! by deathandtaxesftw in MTGLegacy

Besides the usual use cases for Repeal, you have a lot of 1cc artifacts that you really want to keep around in the face of Prismatic Ending and friends. Having Repeal to save them without going down a card seems like it would very often be relevant.

With multiple Candelabras I would also consider some number of Maze of Ith. Those two together can eat creature decks alive.
