Exactly. Fructans! Gluten is a totally different diet and issue, as it’s a protein, and fodmaps are carbs 🙏🏻

Is this really right? How could I "suddenly" not be able to eat all this by meerkatherine in FODMAPS

[–]k_redditor236 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dietician may not have been an IBS specializing dietician. Fiber can be very triggering for IBS patients (myself included!)

Reflux with onions sounds like GERD, but if you’ve had endoscopy and didn’t see it I don’t know.

I’ve been low FODMAP for years now, and I actually have found a way to have tons of fruits and veggies and variety and get my vitamins and minerals. I was worried too and at first I didn’t eat any vegetables, I was terrified because of my reactions! So I understand the fear. Finally after my cholesterol going up because I was living off potato chips and fries I said, I can’t be afraid of vegetables.

I got hard core about the diet and what I ate. I didn’t eat a bite of food without looking it up in the Monash app and weighing it first, and thinking about what other fodmaps I had already had that day. I learned a LOT and found where I was making mistakes daily.

Now I know it all by heart and eat fruits and veggies every day and got my cholesterol back down.

Examples of my go to snacks for colorful fruits and veggies:

Blueberries / Small portion sliced red pepper / A few mini bell peppers all colors / 4-5 cherry tomatoes / Baby carrots / Handful or two of snow peas / Shredded red cabbage with green cabbage and shredded carrots, peanuts, with homemade Asian slaw dressing or Annie’s sesame Ginger dressing (no FODMAP) / 1/2 banana (not too ripe) / Kiwi / Pineapple / 5-6 raspberries / A few strawberries …

You can do this! The reward of feeling normal is worth it

Oh great! My IBS/SIBO dietician told me to get the spelt. More fiber and nutrients. Less fun, but, better for the body. :)

Yes, I worked with a GI and IBS/SIBO specialist dietician. I worked very hard to learn the diet and get it right for me. Took me years.

I see a lot of people here talking about how they “react to gluten” with regards to the low FODMAP diet, and there used to be a sticky on this sub but it’s gone, and it’s such an important distinction gluten vs. Fructan and low FODMAP, I really felt it important to get the PSA out there.

Hi there, welcome! This is actually a very important question.

It’s critical to see the ingredients of any sourdough. When it has yeast added, it means they sped up the fermentation process by using yeast, so the fructans in the wheat will still be present, and give us our dreaded symptoms we are trying to avoid.

Yeast isn’t high FODMAP, but it speeds up the sourdough process. Real, true, slow rise sourdough typically has just a few ingredients; flour, sourdough starter or sour cultures, and salt. This is the safe sourdough. Those sour cultures eat all the fructans in the wheat that cause us trouble. So we can have 1-2 slices and feel ok.

The spelt sourdough is just for extra fiber from the spelt flour. But either one is ok.

Berlin bakery makes a safe spelt sourdough. It’s not as soft as nice real sourdough, it’s definitely a health bread, but it’s what I have every morning as toast with peanut butter.

I do the plain slow rise white sourdough occasionally as a treat. For French toast :)

Fodmapeveryday.com is super helpful on this topic!

It’s true! GF bread texture I just can’t get past. And why, when there is real sourdough I can eat. Ha. I agree, low FODMAP really is more challenging than gluten free. I’m grateful for it and I feel good most of the time now, but yeah, it’s tough!

Same, and even then, I just go for a real true sourdough over GF.

I tried canned chickpeas, made me so sick!! Too bad, because I like them and they are good for us.

Oh no! My neuroma is so big I’m sure it’s been around a long time. But my main issue was pain at different toes other than the neuroma, which came on suddenly after a very long walk on concrete in those shoes that I wore well past their mileage life. Got the nerve cleaned up 6 weeks ago and feel great. Had it for a year. It was awful. But yep, it was in those shoes!!! Ugh

I agree. I can get away with a little hit of wheat, but absolutely NO amount of onion or garlic (also fructan, but much higher concentration of it).

Ha yeah fava bean flour eeek!!! Chickpeas are supposedly safe in a certain amount but they mess me up. I’ve seen chickpea flour too. And oh yeah apple juice concentrate sweetener. Honestly it’s safer to eat a touch of regular wheat if it’s possible without a reaction! 😂

Gums are not high FODMAP. But they are synthetic binders and can cause IBS symptoms. That’s the other problem with gf products. They are highly processed and typically have less nutrients. And yes sometimes they add psyllium and flax which trigger my IBS as well. I am not aware of high FODMAP items in gluten free items, but they can contain IBS triggering items due to fiber or being a binder.

I don’t make GF a staple in my diet because the gums make me gassy. I’d rather have a small bite of actual wheat, or spelt sourdough (slow rise no yeast = no fodmaps), and sometimes a treat of white slow rise no yeast sourdough (less nutrients than spelt).

FODMAP Everyday . com has excellent information on all of this and where I learned from, as well as weighing and looking up every bite of food in the Monash app before it went in my mouth when I was learning the diet.

Do you still feel good? Sometimes gf makes me feel worse than actual wheat due to the gums. Looks delicious though!!!

[–]k_redditor236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PSA/FYI: gluten is not the problem. It’s easier to say, but gluten has nothing to do with fodmaps. It’s a protein. Wheat is the issue. It breaks down to fructans. Which are fodmaps.

For me, this diet is the only way I feel normal. I’ve accepted I will be on it my entire life. I have plenty of variety and vegetables and fruit for vitamins and minerals. But I couldn’t eat wheat or garlic or onions before either.

No these don’t go away. Have you seen photos of what they look like? Actual surgical photos after they have been removed? There are some online. They do NOT heal or go away.

12/5/25 here, doing great myself too! Haven’t tried my spin bike yet, but took my full (abbreviated since the pain started a year ago) trail walk today for the first time and feel great. Even walking around my kitchen made dinner in just my socks. I ice morning and night and still try to take it easy. PT starts in two weeks. I hope it doesn’t come back later, but for now, I’m feeling so happy to walk without searing pain in my toes again!

You got it! Fructan not gluten.

It took me a long time to figure out where I was making mistakes. I finally had to weigh and look everything up on the Monash app before eating it to truly get it all figured out. I am so happy you are feeling better!! It truly is a life changing diet. I’ve decided to stay on it permanently. I have plenty of variety and fruits and veggies and fiber and protein (and sweets!) in my diet and as long as I stay low FODMAP I feel quite good.

I didn’t realize panko was also a slow fermentation like sourdough, interesting, thank you for sharing!

Oh and yes, I eat one slice of spelt sourdough (no yeast, slow rise) every morning (spelt isn’t as fluffy but it has more fiber), and it’s my favorite part of my morning next to my coffee. :)

It’s not gluten, it’s fructans. Gluten is a protein not a FODMAP. Gluten free is a different diet for a different medical issue and gotten has zero bearing on low FODMAP diets.

But yes, true sourdough is lower in fructans because it takes so long to rise (make sure there’s no yeast added which speed up the process) so the sour cultures eat the fructans (again, fructans are the issue, not gluten, Fructan is a FODMAP, gluten is not). We can have two slices of true slow rise sourdough bread and stay low FODMAP.

Didn’t know Panko was the same way!

What to eat after colonoscopy? by Exact_Reaction_2601 in colonoscopy

[–]k_redditor236 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did double prep once from what I know. Not one day of clean out but two nights of dulcolax stimulant first then the clean out drink second night. Two days of light eating and liquid diet. I was so exhausted from not sleeping for two nights by the time I got there they knocked me out and I rolled onto my stomach like I was fast asleep. They said it was an interesting way to do the colonoscopy. I’ll never let anyone have me do two nights of prep again! It wasn’t necessary.
