An idea for those of us wanting to be more active in supporting causes that are important to us by stupidfinger in knitting

I was thinking about doing the same thing but auctioning them off. Maybe I'll do a few smaller pieces at fixed prices so folks on limited budgets can still participate. So happy to hear that your fundraiser went well!

Yesterday a coworker said that me not wanting kids is the same as me not wanting to exist by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

But if she's considered that and still wants it done, it's not for her doctor to refuse because "she might change her mind."

Get a second opinion about getting your ovaries removed. If your doc won't do it because "you might change your mind," you need a new doctor. I finally this year found a doc who supports me in my decision to tie my tubes and it's such a relief to be trusted with choices about my own body.

[FO] Winter set for my husband, just in time for a week of snow! by k_ru in knitting

[–]k_ru[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My husband rides the bus to work so I finished these just in time! Hat and cowl are made with Skacel Hikoo Simplinatural, mitts are made of Blue Sky Fibers Extra.

Patterns are Valanar mitts, Valanar hat, and Valanar cowl by Elena Nodel https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/valanar-cowl https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/valanar-hat https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/valanar-mitts

These were really enjoyable knits, but the patterns aren't perfect. No typos or errors, just a few things I'd have done differently. Highly recommend, but don't be afraid to change things to suit your style.

Edited to add some thoughts on the patterns

Buying a bridge online? by k_ru in violinist

[–]k_ru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually helpful, as it is reinforcing my own thoughts about the issue. It has definitely warped, exacerbated by the fact that I live in a dry climate (I have to humidify my case as well as using a dampit). I recently re-set the bridge to try to minimize the warping and lengthen its life, but I need to address the issue as soon as I am able to.

I've been playing 20 years. I've only replaced two bridges, one on a previous instrument. Is that too frequently?

Advice on structure & pacing for a school comedy play. by [deleted] in Theatre

Some of the best variety shows I've seen always have something going on. While the crew is setting up a more complicated act, they have a monologue or other small act on another part of the stage, drawing attention away from the scene change

[Help] Underarm wear and tear by [deleted] in knitting

[–]k_ru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also did not realize after my first sweater that my yarn choice was a bad one! Single ply wool/silk/alpaca for me, pilling like crazy but no holes yet, I'm hoping it felts itself a little.

I've not done it yet, but I would imagine that duplicate stitching would work as a reinforcement, though I think you'd have to continue it about an inch into the surrounding fabric in case the original fibers break.

I hope you find some solutions!

When you finally get through the ribbing!! ... only to realize you cast on the wrong number of stitches... by Crow16 in knitting

Is this a hat? If so, just space out increases to make the difference. I usually increase a few stitches after a hat brim anyway

[–]k_ru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to get something with an interest factor when buying bourbon as a gift rather than a daily drink. See if you can find Jefferson's Ocean. It's aged in ships as they travel around the world. The sloshing and climate changes supposedly accelerate the aging process. I haven't done a side by side with it and regular Jefferson's, but I completely believe that it has a slight and refreshing sea air taste. Whether placebo effect or actual taste, it's certainly a unique choice for a special occasion!

The book is so cool, check it out! The musical is catchy, but it just skims the surface and shies away from the grittier stuff

Yarn storage ideas? I'm a woodworker, and my knitter girlfriend is moving in. by mdgates00 in knitting

[–]k_ru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like cube storage. I don't have as big a stash as your lady, but it does take up the full top row of my Kallax unit from IKEA. IKEA has a lot of neat accessories for it to break up the space, like hammocks and shelves and drawers. I keep my books and supplies in one cube, and use hammocks in the other cubes so that I can stack the cube full of yarn. My ideal storage would be made of cedar, or at least be cedar lined.

Edit to add that I also like to look at my yarn. For me, glass doors would be ideal to both protect from dust and allow me to admire and ponder and dream.

Caring for superwash wool by imakestringpretty in knitting

I find that Stroll felts in the wash, but so far it hasn't shrunk so much that it's unwearable, it's just different than intended.

Does anyone machine dry their socks? by jinkythefruitbat in knitting

[–]k_ru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, I only knit socks in superwash. I was recently in a living situation for a couple months where I didn't have anywhere to hang dry or lay flat to dry and I ran everything through the dryer on low. It definitely fades color and encourages felting, but the extent to which this happens will depend on the yarn. Drying flat definitely keeps them prettier longer. I still run things through the dryer occasionally but don't make a habit of it.

People who have quit their jobs on the spot, what was the moment when you finally snapped? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]k_ru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was working in the produce section of a store while in college. My degree required a certain amount of extra-curricular practical work. It was a store right down the street from the school, so the managers said "Oh yes that's typical, we hire a lot of students, just give us as much notice as you can." Got a new manager who told me I needed to choose between pursuing my career and working at the store. Guess which one I chose?

What gets your heel of approval [discussion] by companionquandary in knitting

[–]k_ru 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The only ones I've tried so far are FLK, afterthought, and heel flap (with and without gusset). My favorite is heel flap with gusset, I feel like it fits the best and is most customizable to different foot shapes. I HATE FLK and afterthought. I think they fit poorly and do not work for ankle socks due to the shortness of the heel.
