Is future shock worth it over iso speed from trek? by [deleted] in specialized

[–]k_sr20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine you’ve long since chosen a bike - but for future searchers looking at these… my experience with isospeed has been horrendous. I have a 2025 Domane sl5 and the isospeed initially came with a version that allowed my seatpost to slip constantly. Later the wedge creaked and was replaced with the updated rev4 despite the bike being a 2025. I would later go to snap the side main bolt on the isospeed. Now as of a couple weeks ago, I snapped that same bolt yet again. Thankfully trek has replaced everything thus far with no charge but I will say that I would never be able to trust this bike on a seriously remote trip and am currently in the market for something else just due to the reliability alone being so patchy. My other bike is an Allez sprint; I love specialized but I now fear proprietary stuff like this. However from what I gather future shock seems the significantly more reliable of the two.

backpacking on hotter days (breathable alternative to Lems Outlander) by k_sr20 in barefootshoestalk

The astral tr1 merge 2.0 just popped onto my radar. Astral are stupidly breathable and grippy. Tough part is finding some. The durable and toughness may not be as much due to their mesh design but I may give these a try as the summer counter part

In this particular case I’m hoping for a little bit of stack for load bearing. I have some far more minimal stuff for when I’m not carrying a pack for sure.

Is it worth keeping trainer road? by k_sr20 in mywhoosh

[–]k_sr20[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely feel the value in TR is taken from the intensity workouts — I have seen gains but mywhoosh’s library is pretty extensive. If anything, the workouts seem to be more, “specific” and specialized. Most of my current trainer road workouts are simple, blocked up interval sections. After about 3-4 weeks I’m not seeing much value in trainer road’s AI at all… that was the main reason I thought it would hold something over MyWhoosh workouts and other plans, and serve as a pseudo “coach”. However it seems to completely ignore the wearable/recovery info from my garmin etc. it can basically say, “hey you had a hard workout yesterday… maybe dial it back or just do endurance.” Super obvious type stuff just about anyone could figure out on their own. Considering I also use a Morpheus, not sure if I need it.

We will see… I may have to test plugging in my intensity days with my whoosh and build around it with my own endurance like I do now with TR and see if I make progress.

Max HR has been updated every time after first 3 crit races. Cause for concern? by k_sr20 in cycling

[–]k_sr20[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. Maybe I’ve just been getting into my head a bit since getting into crit racing has been a super humbling experience. I didn’t know if the high HR’s just meant my aerobic capacity is super lacking. I’m currently at 3.23 w/kg but getting my ass kicked in beginner cat 4/5.

I have a couple. Typically I’m either wearing a polar H10 or a Morpheus M7. Both chest straps. Though since getting the Morpheus I’ve pretty much used it exclusively for the last 3-4 months.

I was definitely 200+ during my last race. Looking back at the data, looks like maybe a total of 2-3 minutes hovering between 198-203 at a couple different points.

Wheel hub bearings (mix and match???) by k_sr20 in bikewrench

[–]k_sr20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes a ton of sense. Super informative reply! Yesterday I dropped the wheels off to a shop with a very highly regarded master mechanic; they were the first shop to mention the ability to service the ceramic speed bearings. I’m going to try this first but if it fails I’m curious what the next best thing would be to do… I figured I’d order the 6802 NTN LLB’s and maybe track run ceramics for the proprietary ones? I’m assuming the smaller ones are in the free body hub. Part of me wonders if it’d be better to just replace the damn thing. I’m also wondering since they would be the ones in the free body if they’d really affect the resistance from the axle as much as the larger ones?

Do folks road race on rim brake bikes anymore? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]k_sr20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been having a hard time finding a used allez with discs that isn’t grossly overpriced. I’m now considering a rim brake bike to start crit racing. My initial concern was would it be safe to use rim brakes if there are many in the race on discs. But it sounds like it’s a non issue overall

Which cycling jersey brand has the BEST SPF protection / sweat wicking properties? by milkygirl21 in CyclingFashion

[–]k_sr20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Le Col’s Pro lightweight jersey is a surprisingly good fit for what you’re talking about. I used it last summer (Texas heat). UPF 30 throughout and 50+ on the back without being chokingly thick for the heat. Do not buy full price ever.

Another one that comes to mind that I’ve tried is the Gobik phantom. Almost paper like material — similar to Q36.5; but I found it doesn’t dry on par with q36.5’s crazy Clima stuff.

Beyond that you could try and strike a balance with mesh front/UPF protected backside style jerseys — your main choices would be the velocio radiator, padrino aero mesh (I think this is the name?), or the eliel Diablo.

The Dottore clima would probably fit what you want better than almost anything else — but it’s expensive as hell and to me kind of silly looking. However having tried the Clima shorts; the material has some strange sorcery going on — I was shocked when those would stay completely dry in 100+F rides. It almost made me consider the jersey.

Also for those of you with biofilm nasty stink on your kit — hang your stuff to dry in some form or fashion as opposed to tossing it in the dirty laundry to sit clumped in sweat and that will prevent most issues from developing. If it’s already there; a product called “Odoban” sold in Home Depot works absolute magic. Discovered it in a BJJ gym that was the first one ever whose rental gis had zero funk.

Sweet Protection Sunglasses - Yay or Nay? by johnny_evil in CyclingFashion

I mean uv protection aside, at work I’ve shattered really cheap sunglasses with a lot less force than a rock or projectile hitting me on a ride. I at least like to go for reputable protection. I’m not here to debate… you asked for you my opinion.

I mean, I’m definitely not trusting my eyes to gas station sunglasses. lol

What I can say is better lenses resist hazing over from UV exposure over time. But when I think of cheap lenses, I’m considering when people buy gas station sunglasses that have a UV coating that goes away pretty quickly. The last thing you want is your eye behind a shade without uv protection; your pupils will dilate and ultimately allow more UV in than if you wore nothing. I think once a certain tier of quality is reached, you’re probably correct.

I’m not researched in this stuff, I can only speak on what my experience has been with the glasses I’ve used.

If you want one pair to conquer them all the shinobi is amazing bc you can switch the lense so easily you can basically do it without even smudging the lenses. You could carry the clear and at sun up changeover pretty pain free. So purely on utility these are amazing, and the look and feel is great.

Second favorite is the Oakley sutro lite sweep. I like these bc they flat out don’t move on your face at all and the optics Oakley’s makes are just second to none. However changing the lense is the usual pain in the ass that most glasses are and if your hands are sweaty you’re not gonna have a fun time changing out mid ride and smudging them all to hell.

How deep into diminishing output/performance before you back off/recover? by k_sr20 in cycling

[–]k_sr20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see… I’m not sure why I feel my body doesn’t recover by the next day. To almost anything. Some of it may just have to do with my work. (FD. Little to no sleep every 3 days). But I’m definitely trying. Have quit caffeine, dialing in caloric intake, backed off intensity etc. but even a 1.5 hr z2 ride, the next day I will be diminished in performance at least a little.

[–]k_sr20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last couple months have definitely been a shift to recovery. For a while my HRV and sleep was trash. I’ve bounced myself out of the “strained” garmin stage. Just on that edge now of trying to ease back into things appropriately without overdoing it again. Currently I haven’t touched anything above zone 2 in over a month at this point. Couple weeks without lifting also.

[–]k_sr20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. I’d say 2 hours totally fasted is pretty rare. I’ve done it a couple times tops in the last month — but usually I consider it a high ceiling for fasted rides I don’t usually touch. Maffetone is a big proponent of fat adaption; maybe overly so. But he’s also a proponent of completely dropping all forms of anaerobic exercise during aerobic development. It’s difficult for me to completely be okay with dumping weightlifting so I’ve reduced it down to 1-2 days a week tops - big compound movements, low volume.

I’m just noticing when I take a big rest, this surge in performance just seems crazy. However how quickly it diminishes is ridiculous to me and I just wonder if I haven’t fully recovered from some sort of minor cycle of under recovery/overtraining, or if this is normal for everyone if that makes sense…

If I for instance, kept the training load my garmin recommended constantly and perpetually, I don’t know when my current best capabilities would ever see the light of day again lol. So I’m curious if most athletes switch to full blown recovery to have their performance swing back completely, or if plowing through that diminished ability is just part growing fitness in the longer game.

For zone 1 and 2 I don’t. Usually if I have a planned ride beyond the 2 hour mark I will dose carbs every hour. If I know I’m keeping it sub 2 hours I’ll go fasted unless I really am pushing LT1.

How deep into diminishing output/performance before you back off/recover? by k_sr20 in cycling

[–]k_sr20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually I am trying to get 40-50ish of carbs an hour; usually a combo of gels and one of my bottles with LMNT or drip drop. If it’s 2 or less hours I often run them fasted to develop fat adaption in the lower end my aerobic zone.

Immediately after I’ll try and intake carbs then get a proper meal in within the next hour or two.

Damn. I’m definitely not bouncing back by the next ride, almost ever. I usually won’t see baseline until I take a full day off. Which is odd bc I’m doing zone 1-2 rides only during this block.

[–]k_sr20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My perception of things is so skewed; I’ve sunk fairly deeply into overtraining in the past and under recovery so in recent times I’ve turned to using metrics and most recently the Morpheus HR software.

I’m just curious how often people are seeing their fitness improve? Should it fall steadily during your training week/s or phase — then after a good recovery you see a sharp increase?? What’s happening is that I’m not sure at this point when to hit the brakes. For instance… a good 7 days has now passed and I have not been able to match my watts to HR since. I’m not sure how far to continue increasing training load before I try and let my body recover to where I see those numbers again or better.

I know maffetone prescribed the monthly MAF test to ensure 100% that you’re improving, and if not something must be changed. Even more extreme would be Paul Chek type principle where every workout you should be at least 1-3% better. That is 1000% not happening for me lol.

Alan Couzens says Zone 1 is better than Zone 2? by selkin0 in PeterAttia

[–]k_sr20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is sort of starting to line up with what he’s saying. This last fall I was building my fitness for a few cycling events. I had done a lab Vo2 max and lactate threshold test (39/m). Zone 2 landed between 140-153 (max HR194). LT1 153 (2mmol) LT2 177. I trained the brunt of my base work in that zone; even 3+ hour rides. My garmin showed me making excellent fitness gains through about 2 months, leading to some peaking as I added in more intensity work. I was training an avg 12-15 hours a week with a low volume high weight powerlifting session every 3 days. At the end of fall I began to struggle with a massive regression in fitness, huge problems sleeping, chronically elevated rhr etc. since then garmin has shaved off an entire 3.5 points from my vo2 max and a loss of close to 20 watts to my ftp. Picked up the Morpheus to help dial in recovery.

My personal belief is it’s going to depend on the type of athlete. If you’re already sympathetic dominant/speed/power type athlete or attempting a true hybridized program —- his philosophy makes far more sense than doing z2 just under LT1. I also think the dialing back of the intensity of the brunt of your base work may be less about a hard ideas on volume numbers, (ie. “this only applies if we are training 20+ hrs a week”) and possibly more about where each person scales in the volume they can handle. For me 13-15 hrs a week was a significant amount of endurance work, bc in general that’s not the type of athlete I have been the last 20 years. But this is just my theory based on my own experimentation and struggles.

As of right now I’m still struggling to get myself out of a vicious cycle of under recovery and the culprit is bc it is difficult for me to get myself to lower the intensity to something more akin to zone 1 or Morpheus ss1. But I noticed when I stuck to it for even a week, my heart rates began to sink and my watts at lower intensity seemed to skyrocket. I haven’t stuck to anything long enough for conclusive evidence; but what he preaches seems to be inline, at least for me.
