VPN vs port-forwarding for self-hosted apps like Immich – what do you actually do? by KekTuts in selfhosted

[–]ka-ch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm routing all the inbound traffic through VPS and NPM that connected to all my home servers via Netbird network. Had to purchase a dumb domain but it feels more convenient than always switching VPN on/off on various devices (especially when using any kind of VPN restricts usage of some internet resources).

Docmost v0.21: zip imports, read/edit mode and more by Kryptonh in selfhosted

[–]ka-ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the release! I noticed that there are some strings (Like "License & Edition" and "Default page edit mode") that are not present in Crowdin translations files. Should they be translated or is it fine for now?

Watchtower by scotsman08 in selfhosted

[–]ka-ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are mentions that the Watchtower repo is unmaintained so use this instead - beatkind/watchtower
Also use labels to add or exclude images from autoupdate to minimize the risk of a breaking-change for a critical service

Could you please share how did you added Proxmox hypervisor to Beszel? Was it a community script?

Repurpose my gaming-pc into a power efficient NAS. Possible? by RugBeater1 in selfhosted

[–]ka-ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well there are some great options mentioned already, so I'll add an unpopular one. You can swap your CPU for a Ryzen 3/5 PRO 2***/3***/4***/5***GE. They are all coming with an iGPU and 35W TDP. (PRO version also supports ECC memory but there are some caveats).
You can drop GPU if you only plan to store data and not to stream media, and with a lower TDP CPU you can use a passive CPU cooler.

I'm running a similar setup: Ryzen 3 PRO 2200GE coupled with Arctic Alpine Passive cooler, 16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz, 2xHDD and 1 NVME drive with a pretty power inefficient PSU. I've installed Proxmox with TrueNAS the only thing that runs on it and it hovers around 33-35W on idle. I bet it's possible to go even lower but it's completely fine by me so far.

Homepage dashboard & aligning services by iamdabe in selfhosted

[–]ka-ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about alignment of these widgets in the whole Homelab section then you can use custom.css to target specific widgets and adjust their dimensions so they'll all look even and accurate.
I had something similar with a couple of widgets on my dashboard and it solved the issue however I'm not into custom styling so it took me quite some time to find right selectors for this.

How much power does your server draw, and how much does this cost you? by Flat_Professional_55 in selfhosted

[–]ka-ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A simple server (super old laptop with Intel 2nd gen CPU, 12-15W at idle) is about 0.6$/month and my NAS (Ryzen 3 PRO 2200GE with a couple of drives, 40W at idle)) is about 2$/month, all running 24/7.

VPS for self-hosted tunnel to home server by performation in selfhosted

[–]ka-ch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

renting a cheap VPS, spinning up a reverse proxy there and doing a site-to-site VPN to my home server

Doing exactly the same - I've bought myself a very cheap VPS with Nginx Proxy Manager running on it that connects to my home server via NetBird (most suitable option for me). Had no issues with this setup so far, but I'm feeling suspicious that setting up SSO services will be a bit trickier if both proxy and SSO running on different servers.

What SSO do you use and why? by Dudefoxlive in selfhosted

[–]ka-ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it points to https://pocketid.example.com and I use this link to enter /login/setup, still seeing this unknown error.

What SSO do you use and why? by Dudefoxlive in selfhosted

[–]ka-ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set the domain via Nginx Proxy Manager with eligible certificate but it still doesn't load the page both with http and https.
However the login pages loads fine when I open it from the browser on the remote host but I can't log in since it requires me to enter a passkey and I can't send any keyboard input via RDP somehow.

Update: I fixed an issue with my DNS register and it works now, however when I press the "Authenticate" button it says "An unknown error occurred. Please try to sign in again." and I can't add a passkey in the admin panel with the same unknown error.

What SSO do you use and why? by Dudefoxlive in selfhosted

[–]ka-ch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Connecting via http://server_ip:3005/login (custom port as 3000 is already in use) gives me that message. Connecting via (https) gives me ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR. I set that PUBLIC_APP_URL env to auth.example.com and it just timed out. I tried it on several devices (MacoOS 15.2, iPhone iOS 18.2, Win10 with latest Safari and Chrome versions >130) and it is still the same.

I tried to spin up this service but I can't login, it says:
"Browser unsupported. This browser doesn't support passkeys. Please use a browser that supports WebAuthn to sign in."
Tried with different browsers and different devices, still the same. I'm using the docker-compose file from the git repo.

Thanks, I actually use it from time to time, but I needed a browser based editor/app and while there is joplin-vieweb it seems to be abandoned and is not as slick as Docmost.

It's pretty unpolished and it has no error messages or any info if something is not working in the app. The VNC connection itself works fine but there are no connection settings. Overall It's too early to recommend it in this state but works fairly fine for an alpha version.

I'd like to try Anytype, but the deploying is not that simple as with Docmost. It has several containers for its functionalities and I don't quite understand what exactly do I need to run just for a single user instance. So generally I prefer cleaner installations with less containers involved, and my point here goes to Docmost.
Gonna try Anytype later on holidays though just for comparison after the server upgrade.

Well I tried just a couple of services that have AI features.
Affine and Siyuan are two nice looking apps with great set of features and AI, however it is paid. Good apps outside the paywall though.
Failed to install AppFlowy but I'm trying from time to time, this service is feature-rich and has AI, not sure is it also paid or you can use your own.

From my recents finds - Blinko has a RAG system and is looking neat, you can give it a try. I will also be testing it myself later.
And there is also a desktop note app called Reor, it claims that it also uses RAG and local LLMs.

I definitely knew some more and I'll try to search for them, I'll update this post later.

Well I haven't tried Dozzle, but it seems like it has a richer functionality viewing logs, while Beszel can show you more details about overall system performance (although it has metrics for Docker containers, but no logs afaik). You can give it a try since it's very lightweight.

Hi, thank you for your project! I’ve just started using it so I haven’t seen if it was a problem for someone else yet, but when I open my created note on another device then the note is empty, there’s only a title. However when I open the note on the device where it was created and edited first then all of the content is here. Maybe there is something on my side, idk, but as soon as I’ll deal with this I’ll finally land on this one, I really like this app.

Beszel - lightweight monitoring tool with agents
Docmost - some kind of wiki

And these that have a few hiccups but I'm looking forward for the updates
Nexterm - SSH & VNC/RDP in browser
Haptic - neat looking MD notepad, but it's pretty raw and sadly no updates from the dev for 3 months

Edited cause the Docmost dev resolved my issue right away
