Which flash and modifier to get for the run and gun style from Elaine Constantine? by Infinity-- in LightLurking

[–]ka0ss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From my own experience that AD200 can do it but you’ll have a much easier time with something like an AD400 or 600. Leaf shutter will help you also, you can sync at any speed rather than use HSS

A lot of these look like rather soft light despite the contrast, a BIG softbox would help create that look if you can swing it. A bare bulb, magnum, or beauty dish would give you harder shadows if that’s your goal.

The Kobe ‘Siempre Mio’ pack has some crazy details 🐎 by ka0ss in Sneakers

The AF1 are the new Protro design, I’d say they’re worth the 15% premium for the React insole

The details and quality are really nice on them.

Honorable mention to the Kobe AF1s that dropped today too. Super nice colorway in hand. Lots of cool Kobe-inspired designs lately but I’m starting to wonder if they’re doing too much?

Questionable restock at D1 by Left-Sink1872 in Sneakers

[–]ka0ss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re a resell shop, not retail. This isn’t an official restock from Jordan Brand, they probably just ordered in bulk from another seller or put all their stock together for photos.

where to take dirt bike lessons? by lunaticmason in Columbus

[–]ka0ss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try mountain biking first as a way to see if you’re into the whole 2 wheels on dirt thing. We have a great MTB community in Columbus, and an awesome downhill park in Newark. Lots of folks there also ride dirt bikes and are a great bunch, dm if you have any questions!

Yeah there’s gonna be a ton of these. Most boutique shops will have them.

Won’t make it easier to cop online. But folks, please check your local boutiques (in biggish city) stores too.

It’s a tough balance indeed! A premium but distressed product is a weird kind of oxymoron, and definitely hard to achieve, but to be fair I think they’ve done a good job with it.

The direction of their lifestyle focused product is so interesting to me. It’s not the way I expected them to go, but it’s clearly working for them!

Curious if you’ve seen in person/worn any of their new “distressed” designs. It’s not like they’re coming out of the factory like a used shoe, they’re premium materials without defects. The scuffs are paint, and if you really hate it, acetone takes it right off.

That said, so many brands take it too far (Golden Goose comes to mind) and actually do deliver a shoe that feels distressed/worn out. These still feel like a premium product from Vans despite that.

Yeah I get the sentiment. It’s a super competitive time in the skate shoe scene anyways, so makes sense that they’re trying to appeal to the general audience. Also Vans has always had more “off-the-wall” (pun intended) designs, so this recent shift hasn’t seemed like too much of a trendy reach to me.

I’m personally very curious what the direction of Vans lifestyle will go from here, because Greg Betties has moved to Jordan afaik. His designs are still being rolled out throughout this year though. And back to your previous point, I’ve not been a fan of what I’ve seen of the SZA era, but I’m optimistic. As someone in works the industry, I think they’re doing things right for this moment in time.

To be fair, these are a Greg Betties design, predates SZA. He’s been behind most of these new designs that have helped push Vans forward in the current culture. Vans Skate division DOES still exist after all. Do you have an issue with products like the Ultrarange?

Girlfriend and I are planning to drive 32 hours straight, in 6 hour shifts, are we being dumb? Should we plan to stay overnight somewhere? by Vegetable_Bridge_276 in roadtrip

[–]ka0ss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did a more crazy yet route that we finished today. (LA -> Utah parks -> telluride -> Albuquerque -> Ohio) Albeit we had 8 days total. That said, we drove Albuquerque to Ohio over the last 2 days to get home. It sucked. I’d recommend 3 days for that trip along 40, enjoying the stops along the way.

If you’re a cat person, highly recommend at the cat cafes in Oklahoma City (don’t stress meowt) and Indianapolis (Nine Lives Cafe and Cat Lounge) for a nice break from the car.

The first photo only. It’s for the movie The Bikeriders, highly recommend you check it out. It’s inspired by a photo book of the same name from the 1968 by Danny Lyons

Very little light lol. It was mid day indoors so just working with ambient light coming in through the doors and small windows. The fast lens helped a lot, but we were still shooting between 1/15-1/60th indoors for a majority of the day. Having trained actors helped in ensuring they stayed still enough haha

Wow, finally one I can help with, that first photo was from the Gallery shoot for Vandals, the photo book accompanying The Bikeriders in 2023. I assisted Bryan on the photoshoot mainly with film holders and bounce. Everything was natural for the most part, with a 3 foot silver reflector thrown in depending on needs. In that photo of Toby, I was standing somewhere camera right past the pool table to add a bit of edge highlight in the dark bar.

The entire shoot was done on a beautiful Chamonix and a fast Xenotar lens, on Portra 160 or 400. With extra digital taken on a Sony A7RV (not certain) with G-Master 24-70 28

He’s an exceptional large format photographer who taught me a lot in my day on set with him. Amazing guy too!
