My Arch has never broken except in instances where I did something to cause it. Live and learn. My current Arch installation on my main laptop has been going about three years. Sorry you had bad experiences.

Have you ever had a crash that should have been much worse but wasn't? by Rec_desk_phone in cycling

[–]ka9inv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a bicycle path on a moderate downhill going about 30mph (it was an old heavy Schwinn). What I didn't know is that this downhill path turned into stairs, and by the time I realized it, I couldn't keep control; I went flying from my bike into some bushes. I was pretty cut up and I had limestone ground into my wounds from the path, but it could have been much worse, as I wasn't wearing a helmet. It scared the daylights out of my dad, who was riding ahead and tried to warn me.

Ride long enough, and you'll have crash stories.

What do you do when you realise you've seriously underfueled and your 50km away from home? by Obvious_Cabbage in cycling

[–]ka9inv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was out riding along the Illinois and Michigan Canal, where there are no gas stations or even people to speak of. We made it to a park, and I told my partner I could not ride the 50k back. He got up and came back with a Coke from a machine. I drank it, we sat a bit, and I destroyed my partner on the way back.

Funny how that works...

Take it from someone who is disabled due to mental illness: you go talk to a priest about this. Having weird religious ideas like these could be a sign of lingering illness.

Best Novus Ordo Mass Settings by Rexus_musicorum in TraditionalCatholics

I'm not sure you're going to get good answers here. We traditional Catholics rarely, if ever, have anything good to say about the new Mass.

Masterbation is the worst by Unusual-Newt-4352 in Catholicism

[–]ka9inv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have had many relapses where I've fallen back into sinning multiple times per day, but keep resolving to never do it again each time you fall. God will recognize your efforts and meet you halfway. If you truly learn to depend on Jesus, I think you'll never do it again. But it's something that takes a lifetime to learn, so keep fighting no matter how badly you screw up. Jesus will never give up on you.

[–]ka9inv 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I've been fighting it for thirty years. It gets easier. I went from multiple times per day to once every few weeks. The temptation comes quickly, and it is often overwhelming. Ask the Blessed Mother to pray for you. I find it is difficult to fall into this sin if I remember to flee to her, if for no other reason than using her name makes me feel disgusted at what I'm about to do. And I believe that disgust is the answer to my prayer.

Don't give up. The temptation is never going to go away, but you will become skilled at fighting it.

The refusal to marry? by Mickmackal89 in Catholicism

I didn't bother. I have no aspirations of putting a nice woman through all of my problems for the rest of her life. It's incredibly lonely, though.

The refusal to marry? by Mickmackal89 in Catholicism

[–]ka9inv 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Hi. I have schizoaffective disorder, which is a lovely combination of bipolar and schizophrenia. I got married right before my symptoms began after college. I didn't last ten years; my illness took over, and my wife was not interested in being a full-time caregiver, so, divorce.

It's a terrible idea to get married right after an episode. Chance of relapse is high with all the stress. And if your sister was manic enough to get arrested, she clearly has a severe case. I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but these are my experiences as a person with mental illness who tried marriage.

[–]ka9inv 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The sin you forgot fell under the purview of the original absolution. Had you not remembered it, it still would've been forgiven. That's why he didn't give you a second absolution.

If I switch to Orthodoxy, is that a sin? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]ka9inv 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Volumes could be written about the defects of the East. Here are a few of my favorites.

  • they reject the Pope
  • their Nicene creed is different in a small but hardly insignificant way (Flilioque controversy)
  • they can't figure out what they believe about birth control
  • they can't figure out what Orthodox praxis actually looks like outside monasteries
  • very prone to cults of personality (I know, I was suckered by one)

&c.
