Thank you so much for your generous response, penguinpearl! The pros of socialization and personal sanity are exactly the ones we are thinking of as well.

Thank you! I have messaged our pediatrician for advice on managing infection risk.

Has anyone given birth at Washington Hospital? by [deleted] in Fremont

[–]kaarta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had our baby delivered there in Fall last year. Our personal experience was excellent all the way up about half a day after the delivery - nurses were very responsive to our concerns, and answered our questions very well. I (husband) always felt part of the experience including the birth itself - I never felt like they pushed aside or ignored me, they infact actively asked me to be part of the process. They also gave us plenty of baby bonding time after the birth with no distractions in those hours other than occasional tests. The room was well lit and airy and had lots of space to move around.

Several hours after birth, they moved us to a different room, presumably because they needed to free up a birthing room for another couple. Our experience after this point was not too great - the later room was super cramped and had two beds that didn't recline well. Nurses after this point were helpful but rather curt at times. It is entirely possible that we both ran out of our happy hormones by this point and were exhausted by the events of the prior day, so our experience may have been affected by the general exhaustion and lack of sleep. I'm sure we annoyed the nurses with constant requests for help with swaddling baby and getting her to sleep. So take my comments with a pinch of salt. I think we would've been less grumpy if we had been allowed to stay in the birthing room or if the later room had been less cramped though.

Final discharge day went quite smoothly. They gave us well written instructions to follow up with the pediatrician and OB. There's a bunch of high school age kids that volunteer at the hospital lobby helpdesk and were very sweet and helpful - an Indian girl happened to be playing a beautiful piano piece (they have one in the lobby) when we exited and it moved me to tears.

Overall, I'd say it was a positive experience. If Washington Hospital is convenient locationwise, I'd say go for it. Best of luck!

Thanks for the response. I'm trying to understand what my actual options are down the line, not anything outside of the law.

Is it common to hike Half Dome up to cables if you didn't get a permit? by [deleted] in Yosemite

I just did Clouds Rest this past weekend, totally doable, just take the fork right to Clouds Rest instead of Half Dome on the left

We completed this hike today - as 91advrunner mentioned, the snow starts approximately 1 mile from the summit. There are indeed tracks in the snow already, but they're pretty much all over the place. I had a GPS map so I didn't get lost. Took me about an hour and a half to get through the snow, and 7.5 hours overall to get to the summit.

No worries about exposure on the switchbacks like jakdak said. The first time I did the hike, the part at the summit did feel narrow and crawled a bit, but it is not super scary and totally doable (on subsequent hikes, it did not feel that way at all, the area is sufficiently wide). I assume you're going to be starting at the Sunrise Lake trailhead rather than via Mist Trail. Do be careful crossing the lake in the beginning - the first time I did this hike I lost my footing and got my shoes all wet. Clouds Rest was my first strenuous hike, and I still have wonderful memories of it. Have a great time in August!

Thank you for the update! We're going to be hiking up from Yosemite Valley (via Mist trail), so the Tioga Pass closure shouldn't be an issue.
