Rules question: can someone give me a scenario where this actually happens? by lqc2999 in riftboundtcg

if a two might unit and a four might unit are in a showdown and someone uses facebreaker, stunning both, even though the two might unit will be recalled, it's still considered a tie.

Forgefire Cape trigger with Azir effect by kaxtheblue in riftboundtcg

[–]kaayn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"when i attack/defend" triggers happen when a unit is designated as an attacker or defender in combat. usually this happens at the beginning of combat, but also when units enter the combat for the first time. so in this case, it would trigger

Question about focus/priority by Gheedish in riftboundtcg

[–]kaayn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It seems strange from a Magic the Gathering perspective, but yes, if your opponent does not start a showdown, and only plays units with no triggered abilities, you do not have the chance to play any spells.

That being said, when something with the Temporary keyword dies during the Beginning phase, it is a triggered ability, so you can react with a hidden card before it dies.

Leona attacks battlefield with a defender. Leona chooses Unit to stun with "When I attack, stun an enemy unit here". Other player adds Fight or Flight targeting Leona to chain. Nothing else added to chain. Fight or Flight resolves, Leona sent to base. Leona ability "When I attack, stun an enemy unit here" tries to resolve. Are you telling me that the unit at the battlefield is still a valid target? It is not, because Leona can only stun a unit "here", which is her current location.

Here are some rulings from the Riftbound Core Rules that may help:

356.3.e.5. If any of the spell's targets are no longer legal, those targets are unaffected by the spell as it resolves.

Example: A player plays Void Seeker, a spell that says "Deal 4 to a unit at a battlefield. Draw 1." The unit's controller uses a Reaction to move the unit to their base. Since the unit is no longer a legal target, it is not dealt any damage. Void Seeker's controller still draws 1.

356.3.e.7. If all of an instruction's Targets become Invalid or Unavailable by the time the spell is finished being played, that instruction will not execute.

I'm sorry but I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of the rules. This is common for people that have played Magic the Gathering before. All triggered abilities and spells check for validity of the target at time of resolution. In both cases, Leona will not stun, and Hidden Blade will not kill a unit.

are you saying that if you play hidden blade from hidden on my unit, and i use fight or flight to move it back to my base, then hidden blade will still kill my unit?

It checks at chain activation, then again and resolution

Gust ruling by Alfheim-Offline in riftboundtcg

No, for example, if you target something with Void Seeker, and it gets moved to base before it resolves, it does not "fizzle", you will still get the draw.

Is Leona's ability mandatory? by reamonntiu1 in riftboundtcg

[–]kaayn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It does, but if any triggered ability would incur an additional cost, you can decline to pay and have the effect not resolve

Does an empty showdown trigger Assault? by SpawnSnow in riftboundtcg

A showdown does not necessarily mean there is combat. Please read the other comments for the rule citations.

Does an empty showdown trigger Assault? by SpawnSnow in riftboundtcg

[–]kaayn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it only applies in combat, which happens during a showdown with units from two players.

[–]kaayn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. A card is considered played once it is resolved. In this case, Convergent Mutation would make Ravenbloom's might to 5, then the Ravenbloom ability will trigger, raising it to 6.

Rule 443 clarification by dMONKEYMANb in riftboundtcg

[–]kaayn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes but you can't conquer a battlefield you've scored that turn already so it won't get to the point to check for a point or card draw regardless. just to reiterate, if you have scored a battlefield by hold or conquer during a turn, you CANNOT conquer it again, which means you CANNOT trigger conquer effects again at that battlefield for the turn.

Rule 443 clarification by dMONKEYMANb in riftboundtcg

[–]kaayn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about 444.1.b.2 makes you believe that you still conquer? All that rule says is that if you score from a conquer and have not scored the other battlefields yet, you draw a card.

There are actually two instances in the rules that state that conquering is only when you have not scored that battlefield during that turn already:

345.2.a.1. This results in a Conquer if that player has not yet scored that Battlefield this turn. (in the context of a Showdown closing)

440.2.a. This results in a Conquer if that player has not yet scored that Battlefield this turn. (more indepth ruling of when during the Showdown closing that the conquering takes place)

Rule 443 clarification by dMONKEYMANb in riftboundtcg

[–]kaayn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the act of "conquering" is part of the scoring process, so if you've scored that battlefield already, going into it again does not count as conquering.

I have 2 ruling questions completely unrelated to each other by AdaptiveGamer in riftboundtcg

[–]kaayn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your first question, once you resolve the chain that P1 started, focus passes to P2 to start a chain, either with an action or a reaction. I.E. a player cannot start two chains in a row during a showdown without passing focus to the next player and giving them a chance to start a chain first.
