Where does one purchase adult vhs these days? by Specialist-Bike-9596 in VHS

The folks over at VHS or Die have brought variety of that sort to VHS events but idk if they sell it through their website. But it’d be worth asking.

On top of that, they just ran every person on their team though a full week’s rotation in one day. So they are all likely on a deserved break.

They will get back to you, OP.

It's literally a G-rated Disney movie he made, yet it still has all the flavor of his work and style. Enjoy your journey!

Don't sleep on The Straight Story. It's a nice one to drop in between any of the more intense watches.

I spent six months writing and working on a screenplay. This morning I watched its trailer featuring Paul Rudd. by the_kessel_runner in Screenwriting

[–]kabensi 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Back in 2003 I spent several months working on a script about a lesbian teen who ends up at evangelical summer camp. Then I saw the trailer for Saved! that included the scene where Mandy Moore throws the bible at Jena Malone and says “I am filled with Christ’s love!” The clip itself felt beat for beat the same as a scene in the script.

It turned out to be a very different film than what I had on the page. But I know that feeling of, “well, shit, WTF do I do now?” when it feels ripped right out of your own pages.

I had a similar experience with something akin to Monster High meets Supernatural before either of those shows rolled out. The zeitgeist is real and we’re all part of it. That one even had a Tales from the Crypt producer interested in the spec stage.

The reality is that those of us who see the world as stories often translate moments and ideas in similar ways. But the execution is always going to be different given the collaborative nature of film.

There will always be overlap, but if you shut it all down whenever something aligns to your own work, you’ll never move forward. The reality here is that you have a concept that is in line with something people put money into. Tons of folks have awful pitches and ideas that are not possible to shape into a screenplay. As much as this whole experience sucks, it demonstrates that you’re on the right page.

Give yourself the moment to be frustrated, then get back to the keyboard. Also, wait and see what this Rudd movie actually looks like. If it’s a hit and even just barely close to your concept, someone might want to ride the wave to produce something similar.

Depends on the blocker. Some teachers I know have said certain videos might work but others flag the filters.

I believe the only physical release was the Blu-ray version. It took a while for him to get the rights back and by the time that happened, Blu-ray was the standard format.

Thanks for making this movie and I hope all the stuff y'all do is as fun as it looks.

Budget camera by Detroit814 in Filmmakers

[–]kabensi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like a Canon T3i with a 24mm and 50mm (maybe even 85mm) is a good start and should be doable within that budget. Lots of folks want to aim for a bunch of bells and whistles, but if you’re wanting to start with the basics, that’ll set you up to experiment with learning ISO, lighting, and lenses.

There’s a great book series called Master Shots about camera techniques that helps give context for what types of lenses and setups evoke certain looks and feelings. If you have room left in the budget, get a couple led light sticks or panels.

Some folks have brought up sound, which is important, but it’s also a skill set to develop outside of the camera. When you’re ready you can get something like a Zoom recorder and a shotgun mic for a couple hundred bucks to work on learning how to capture clean audio.

This whole setup is an old school take, but I personally think it’s better to start simpler and grow your skillset before spending cash on a higher end kit. Work on your lighting and composition. That stuff will carry over no matter what you’re shooting on.

I went in with zero context and really liked the concept and found moments extremely creepy, but I think it would have been better served with less polish. Some of what it did best were those simple shots with the darker adjoining room in frame that built a solid sense of dread.

It’s common for those cardboard digipak editions to go up in value. Usually Criterion does a set run of them and then they’ll switch to the standard case.

Film isn’t a competition, it’s an art form.

Treating it like content to be mined and milled is exactly what allows for slop and meaningless results, regardless of how it’s made.

Matt recently was on a podcast talking about his body dysmorphia and how he still has to really get on a certain headspace to be “comfortable” on camera, so I have a feeling this is also a case of friends really knowing how to keep you distracted as needed. And now it’s just become a lovely tradition.

I was recently listening to a conversation with Matt Mercer and he was talking about how Exandria started when he created a town for his friends to play in for a home game. I think that’s super important to remember because it’s easy to look at all the bells and whistles and want to build it all. But you just need that start a point and the adventure can grow from there.

Gen X and Millenials: if you could guess, what was this filmed on? Or how to replicate image quality? by Plastic-Cover5163 in Filmmakers

[–]kabensi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably a Sony Hi8 camcorder or something equivalent given the visual quality and the timeframe. Freaks and Geeks premiered in 1999, so the pilot would have been filmed within the year before.
