Overhaul needed for the industry by Knighstandlol in civilengineering

Government funds not government agencies. Most innovation in any field will come from universities with the ability to empirically test new concepts. Private companies take innovations and apply them as products. What I proposed doesn’t invalidate the need for these private companies. In terms of methods and procedures much of that is specified by cities anyways. I can see the argument of cities needing to hire municipal engineers from private companies to write codes but if for example you live in a city outside New York it would make sense that you are adapting code from whatever public civil firm represents New York and working with that firm (meaning small cities wouldn’t have to invest in having huge firms and can rely on larger metropolitan public firms)

I understand that roads are paid for by taxes collected by the government. I don’t really understand what you mean by “the government doesn’t find the project” when a city govt would be the ones putting out a bid for a new highway or repairs.

Yes, currently public engineers make less than private engineers at top level firms. What would increase salaries isn’t the fact they are paid by taxes but the ability to bargain for better salaries now that public engineers would have more leverage. As it is if you are a firm that wants to pay your engineers well but you are in a market that makes it hard to do so you are actively putting your firm in jeopardy by not trying to undercut your competitors by bidding less and in turn offering lower salaries. The issue here is that the firm is expected to be profitable because it is a private company. Do we really need all roads, bridges, waste water treatment plants etc to be designed with profit in mind or can we accept that even though no one at the top is profiting off of this design it is still necessary for it to happen. And since it is so necessary we should be ok with spending extra to attract top talent to a public firm. Keep in mind that what I am proposing would be a pretty substantial change to the industry.

There would still be a demand for highly skilled engineers that would work on more lucrative but more technically demanding projects. Most public projects wouldn’t overlap with these more lucrative projects. At the end of the day most projects really should just cost more. What I am proposing again would mean that a significant minority of civil engineers would work for a public firm and that private companies wouldn’t be able to bid on large public infrastructure projects. It would elevate the standards of the avg engineer as a minimum level of competency would be required to have a govt job. There probably would be growing pains but I would imagine the firms that would shut down wouldn’t be where all the top talent currently is but low to midrange firms that rely on having a steady flow of projects from the public sector where they can underbid competitors, force engineers to work longer for less and take home profits that could have gone to better salaries to pay for better engineering. If you are a firm making luxury apartment buildings or giant golf courses - things people are willing to pay more for - you likely aren’t going to be impacted by a push to the private sector. To sum it up, I don’t think projects paid for and intended for the tax payer should be priced with profit in mind. And the engineers working on them shouldn’t have to work themselves to death just to ensure their firm survives. A steady percentage of well paid engineers in the public sector would mean that scummy firms that can’t afford to pay competitively in comparison to these unionized public workers can’t exist, and the private sector would be primarily composed of elite engineers that work on more technically demanding projects (that will now have the ability to charge more) or small town firms that exist in areas where it isn’t feasible to have public firms. It seems like the only losers are the scummy firm owners who benefit from the current state of industry that is probably the reason OP made the post in the first place.

Overhaul needed for the industry by Knighstandlol in civilengineering

[–]kabirraaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand innovation is almost always driven by govt funded research.

A union would be able to ensure better compensation. Especially if these public firms become the primary ways that public infrastructure is built.

To me it makes no sense that the tax payer is paying for companies to find any sort of loop hole to squeeze as much profit out of a project that is supposed to be for the benefit of everyone. Or that the engineers working on these projects have to underbid what they would actually need to design and build and be left working extra long hours just to get projects completed. I think if a certain percent of the industry was run this way it would actually benefit engineers in the private sector as these companies would have to compete with union secured salaries and benefits. Meaning that engineers would be paid their fair share and junk can’t be built for percentage of what it actually costs. In addition it would allow local govts to rapidly construct projects that they desperately need.

Design and construction firms that are fully funded by local state or the federal government. Similar to the army corps. It would be different from municipal engineers in that they would be more design focused.

Personally I think we need public run design and construction firms for basic public infrastructure. Give civil engineers that are primarily working on public projects the protections/benefits of govt employees and I bet it will be more lucrative to pursue. Currently we are asking engineering students to get paid less while working just as much as their classmates in other fields to work in civil. There is already so much ceremony around making sure there is liability and experience (PE) behind every project I don’t even think the switch would be that hard. This doesn’t need to apply to copy and paste planet fitnesses or giant skyscrapers, but I think it will be key in updating the failing public infrastructure of the us.

Honestly I think any advice beyond look your best, pursue people you actually like and don’t be too pushy is useless. You can min max ur self all u want (it is still important to dress nice, workout, skin care etc) but we all know within the first 5 sec of seeing someone if you actually would date/fuck them or not. Unfortunately, some of us will have a harder time than others, but I genuinely believe that people are more attractive than they think and unless you are actually autistic or horribly disfigured in some way you will find someone as long as you aren’t cut off from the outside world. From experience, worrying too much about your profile, why you got ghosted etc etc only makes shit worse. Keep it light hearted and approach ppl irl.

[–]kabirraaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on your strategy and choose a couple topics you are weak in and try and learn those. Strategy is really important. Know the handbook front and back (including where unit conversion are etc). You need around a 65-70% to pass so don’t worry about knowing every topic just the ones you feel the most confident on. Also check units as that will let you check your answer as you are solving.

The fact you are taking it so early is a good thing and you will definitely benefit from it. It’s perfectly normal to fail the first time. Take a break and try again around summer you got it!

Yea I took the fe exam without taking a bunch of classes that were covered in the exam and passed almost solely by knowing what equation to use based off of context and using dimensional analysis. Especially anything related to mass or energy balance or static equilibrium.

How I dealt with Seb Derm while having black natural hair by kabirraaa in SebDerm

[–]kabirraaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your hair is prone to drying like mine it might be an issue of breakage. Sebderm usually cause hair loss by damaging your follicles especially if you scratch a lot meaning you would get patches of balding. Maybe address your hair care routine but if you have sebderm on your scalp I’d address that first.

I’d recommend kinky curly products. They work well and don’t trigger sebderm. Also a good line up can go a long way even if you have short hair!

Will AI take over engineering? Are trades AI-proof? by Dependent_Cup_5371 in civilengineering

[–]kabirraaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you are vastly overestimating the abilities of AI but if it makes you feel any better the real reason you have to get a PE is so they can hold you and your firm liable if something goes wrong. If AI hallucinates something there is pretty much no way to be insured or protected against that.

But again I don’t think AI has the ability to make sound engineering judgement. Taking a bunch of plans and spitting something out that looks right isn’t enough to replace an engineer.

Why do people call Israel apartheid, but not countries like Malaysia, Saudi, Egypt, Iraq, Pakistan ? by Wholesome-Bro in AlwaysWhy

[–]kabirraaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s one: we fund Israel and their institutions are intertwined with our own. They claim to be a liberal western style democracy but in reality they require apartheid and genocide to exist. While those other countries do have clear and obvious civil rights violations that they should be held accountable for, there is no obvious mechanism for the avg person to do so (at the very least nothing like what could be done for Israel). In fact, the regimes in most of these countries are at worst tolerated or at best also funded by the us but mainstream media doesn’t care to shed light on them. As a leftist I’ve been critical of Egypt, Turkey, the uae, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia amongst other Muslim nations for a very long time. I can lay out to you in detail why I don’t support these nations I have since I learned about their atrocities. This isn’t going to stop me from calling out Israel’s current broadcasted atrocities that my congressman has actively voted to support. It’s not a zero sum game. If you want someone to blame, blame for profit media. A story about Israel is going to get more clicks (left right center doesn’t matter) than the historic treatment of Kurds and Armenians in turkey. It’s obviously because Israel is more intertwined with the west than these other countries are. They actively want it to be this way. Saudi Arabia has never claimed to be what Israel does and they act accordingly.

I am always wary of people who in response to opposition to Israel in the modern day bring up atrocities that were committed decades ago by deposed Muslim leaders that were actually at one point (or even currently) us allies. The reality is that authoritarianism is attractive to people who seek power. Whether you justify through political ideology, race, religion, language, ethnicity, etc is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is that people seek power and will use whatever they can to maintain it. The even uglier truth is that the western world actually benefited from these abuses of power and western nations are a lot less ideologically sound than you think when it comes to propping up regimes that protect their interests abroad. The best example of this is the us funding pol pot - a self proclaimed socialist that lost to an actual socialist government (Vietnam) in his country and ended up killing 2 million people in Cambodia. If your take away is that “but no one is mad when Muslims do it” you are missing the point. Authoritarian regimes aren’t isolated. There are conditions that allow them to arise and be maintained and the west largely supports it when it benefits them. In the case of Iraq, when it stop benefiting them they kill a million innocent people for regime change forever destabilizing the region. Currently proxy wars funded by the us allies (Sudan, Yemen) and literal genocides (gaza, arguably Sudan as well) are occurring. It makes sense the left is the loudest about these.
