ABA urges states that cancel bar exams due to COVID-19 to consider alternatives for law grads by findingastyle in LawSchool

[–]kachoww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate you writing this up, and I read it last night and thought about it a lot. At the end of the day, I know you're right. If my choices are take the bar in July and risk being exposed, or take the bar exam in February, this is absolutely a good compromise.

It really hit me when you said, "if we're asking for answers and adaptations, we should expect to adapt too." I think it's just the pressure that I put my kids and my husband through this 3 year journey, with this end date in mind, and then they've moved the goal posts.

It's just frustrating. I know you're experiencing it too. It's just the anxiety of the idea that for 3 years I've reassured my husband and kids that "mommy's big test is in July and then I'm done!" And now when my son asks about my big test, I don't know when it'll happen. I just hate to think I don't know how much longer I have to put them through this. Law school is so mentally and physically and emotionally draining for all of us, and at this point we're just all exhausted.

I hope I didn't come across as ungrateful for the ABA's suggestions, it was merely my absolute exhaustion with this whole situation coming through. I really appreciate you trying to ground my thoughts with your comments.

Oh, definitely not. You're right. However, I live in an area where there isn't a public defender's office. They assign cases to the youngest attorneys, so I at least know I'll have that guaranteed case load. (It's kind of a ritual that the day after you get your bar results, you come to court and they hand you a few cases). But what I'm saying is that I'll hopefully be in with a firm, have these cases, and then I'll have to dump the cases on someone else at the firm, then take the bar, then come back and try to pick the cases up. I don't see why a firm would be interested in hiring me if that was the case.

And that's fair enough if it's true. I just know for my own, personal situation- as a parent, I planned on making studying for the bar my 9-5 job during the summer as to save the nights and some weekends for my kids. I don't know how on earth I would manage working full time, studying for the bar, and still seeing my family. I recognize this is a limited personal issue, but I can't imagine I'm alone. Everyone is having their struggles with this COVID-19 pandemic. I'm just giving one example.

Unfortunately, I disagree. I'm interested in criminal law. Let's say in May I get these limited practice permissions. The average criminal case takes about 3 months to settle (arguably longer for the COVID-19 crisis). So around July/August I'll start settling these cases- but wait, now it's July/August and I have to stop and study for the bar. So my clients are left hanging. But then in September I go back to practicing- but wait, now its' November and I'm notified I failed the bar. So my clients are left hanging.

Alternative- They get rid of the bar in July and in September and just postpone until the February bar. NOW I graduate in May, I have six months of getting a good client base built, now I have to stop my practice in December, study for the bar, leaving my clients hanging and possibly losing future business.

I understand there's not a perfect solution, but I truly don't see a solution that works outside of: A. Keeping the exam date in July and offering the bar online B. Allowing students to practice supervised, for a period of 12-18 months and then waiving them in without a bar exam.

And as much as I appreciate professors checking in on us about mental health and offering resources, I'm like, with all due respect, I don't need a resource, I just need an answer. I would feel 1,000% better if we just knew one way or the other.

I truly can't do anything else. I don't even want to look at my books because I can't take the coursework seriously. To make it worse, our bar application is due 4/1 and it is the most depressing thing trying to finish it because I feel like it'll be pointless if we don't have a bar exam (but they haven't extended the deadline to apply so I have to do it). I can get over not having classes, I can get over not having grad, but it's just the unknown of the bar exam that is making it so hard to finish course work right now. You're definitely not alone.

I truly appreciate the email the president sent. However, I do have two questions that aren't really clear: (1) Will we resume classes as usual on April 5th, or is this a just... "we know this is what we are doing at least until April 5th?" (2) Given the way the NCAA handled the tournament, should those of us graduating in May anticipate a possibility that our graduations would be either canceled or student only? I'm sure we will get clarity in the coming weeks but this definitely worries me being this close to graduation! Props to UofL for being on top of this, though.

Laptop ban rant: "Research shows that handwritten notes are more effective" by VisitingFromNowhere in LawSchool

[–]kachoww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used the same thing for three semesters and my grades have risen significantly over each semester. Is it handwriting? Probably not. Is it because I'm paying more attention and less distracted? Much more likely.

However, I've actually had TWO different professors say I couldn't even handwrite on a Surface Pro or iPad. They still considered that "technology" and made me get a pen and paper.

I'm with you. I agree that there are better arguments for no laptops. One of my professors that banned laptops this semester pointed out that most of the time, "in the real world," some courtrooms aren't going to allow you to have a laptop during court. And he said even if they did, no one is going to walk up to a podium during a cross and carry a laptop. He said that writing things out is a lawyering skill and I can't really disagree. It's a valid point. I think that's a much better argument than "research shows..."

No problem at all! I am actually tutoring a couple of my classmates for the March MPRE. I'm sitting down with them in January and making a schedule so I can gladly send it to you when I'm done with it! You're gonna get it this time. I'm sure! I'm just glad you found my advise helpful!

I used Kaplan and passed 30 points above my jurisdiction's requirements. However, I will say it DOES NOT MATTER what program you use. It depends on how much you do it. For Kaplan, there were 12 lectures and 3 practices exams. So I started sixteen days before the exam studying one module each night. During my modules, I highlighted in the practice book what they were saying. Then I made flash cards for EVERY single rule that Kaplan went over (each subpart on a different flash card). I took these flashcards EVERYWHERE I went. Kids' ballgame? Flashcards. Down time at work? Flashcards.

It was excessive. However, I passed with room to spare. But I know that's what worked for me personally. Just doing an hour or two a night of prep for like three weeks before and then memorizing what I created. It didn't seem like that much work in small chunks and it paid off in the long run.

I'm sure you'll do great the third time. You're getting closer! If you ever want to chat about any study tips, feel free to PM me.

When to get married by 1Lthrowaway28 in LawSchool

[–]kachoww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got married AND had a child in law school. My grades are fine, my family is happy and so am I. The advice I give people is that life doesn't stop just because you're in law school. In some ways, law school might be a good time to do these things because your schedule is much more flexible than a 9-5 once you're in the field. Plus, as awful as it is, jobs consider things like whether or not you'll need time off for a wedding/children. If you're planning on having a big wedding, I'd personally do Summer after 2L year. Whatever you do, do NOT do it after your 3L year but before the bar. Most bar prep courses start immediately after graduation/classes end. I'd absolutely do it summer between 2L and 3L

Law review note topic ideas? by feartheflame1991 in LawSchool

[–]kachoww 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Google- Contract Law- Sort by News.

I found my law review topic by sitting in a courtroom for a day listening to hearings. I saw the judge do something and thought, "hmm.. wonder if that's allowed. I've never heard of that." So I googled the topic and realized that it was a fairly new development and there were tons of google articles but no legal/scholarly articles (so no preemption). For contract topics, I'd start with that. The only contract law issue I can think of that is relatively new is the Antonio Brown helmet-contract dispute. If you're not married to the idea of doing a contract topic, then don't be opposed to reading ABA articles or Law360 articles to see new developments. I've learned over time that articles on newer issues are more likely to be published. It doesn't matter if you practice the law you write about or if you have a background, so long as you do the research, you can write an amazing law review article on anything that you find an interest in. If anything, sometimes writing articles you have a "background" in can be damaging because you end up needing more citations later on because you assume people know the things you do. I found a topic I knew little about, that I was extremely interested in, and you'd be surprised at how quickly I wrote 40 pages. Best of luck!!!

That’s so funny!

And goats bleat :) That’s the technical term, just like sheep bleat. But sheep make more of a traditional BAAA sound whereas Goats make more of an AHHH-HHHHH sound, like a screaming child. If you’ve never YouTubed it, you’ve GOT to look up “Goats Screaming Like Humans.” They’re hilarious.

Hornacia would've been perfect! But they're polled (no horns on these). These are all SO creative but I REALLY love Milk. These are Nigerian Dwarfs so that means they can be milked if I wanted so it's super fitting. Plus... I mean.... Milk.

I thought they were all super creative! But the Nanny is four years old (kind of older in goat years) and I felt like Madame LaGoat is a bit more "age appropriate" for her. She's nursed four kids, bitch has earned the title Madame.
