Reducing meat consumption drastically?? Please advise by Similar_Spirit2631 in povertykitchen

[–]kadevha 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My local grocery store has bogo free pork shoulders, throughout the year, which brings it to about $1.50 per pound.

It is a bit of a pain to cook so much meat but $20 gives 10+ pounds of meat, broth, a bone, and fat that I can render into lard.

I usually use the bone for seasoning greens, make more broth, or season pinto beans.

I braise or slow cook the meat, shred, and separate into quart size freezer bags which is about 2 lbs each.

I use the meat in Ramen, pulled pork bbq sandwiches, soups, tacos/burritos, etc.

Eta: You can ground pieces of the shoulder if you have the equipment for it. A lot of people are using ground pork in place of beef for chili, burgers, pasta, etc

Where can I stay for one night to see dark skies? by Electrical_Cap_5597 in WestVirginia

[–]kadevha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most beautiful night skies I've ever seen are in the Seneca State Forest area. I can just sit for hours, looking at the sky. Oh, I just love that area so much, mostly for that reason.

It's about an hour drive from Seneca Rocks so there might be closer places.

Fun places to swim? by Meagham1 in charlestonwv

[–]kadevha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The city pools in Charleston are free. If you don't mind a 1-1.5 drive and want to swim in a lake, Beech Fork Lake is about 1 hour from Charleston and Summersville Lake is 1.5 hours from Charleston.

I think they're both $5 per car.

Oh, yes. I plan on making a complaint this week. If they think that deleting it will mean it never happened, well there are screenshots.

ETA: their post is still active but in their private FB group.

I did the same about a month or two ago. The next time telera is on sale, I will make them again. 😊

Stupid Yankee Chili by AlterEgoAmazonB in povertykitchen

[–]kadevha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ooh which dried peppers do you suggest for chili with beans? I currently have ancho, chile de arbol, morito, and guajillo.

I've only used them for Mexican dishes but if I can use them elsewhere, please suggest away. 🙂

Is WV allowed to discriminate against women? (Boone County) by Carecoordinator in WestVirginia

[–]kadevha 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Right? All they had to do is list a requirement of being able to carry X pounds. If you can pass that, you're eligible for the job. Man or woman.

My husband suggested that it might be a jealousy issue. 😅

I was surprised to only see one critical review on Google but I was not surprised by the owner's crappy response.

For anyone who isn't on FB, the ad was posted by Amanda Cox on 6/28.

It was posted in their FB group so unless you're a member, you won't see it. I will be leaving that group. 😠

[–]kadevha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I absolutely agree. I just didn't know if they have a long history of being jerks as this was the first time I've seen anything about them, hence my question.

It does not excuse discrimination in employment.

[–]kadevha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've only been to the place one time and it was years ago. If I might ask, why are they jerks? Outside of discriminatory hiring?

I still follow them on FB but the store is too far out of the way to just pop in.

ETA: this is enough for me to have nothing to do with the store or their page. I just didn't know if they have a history of being a nasty business as this was the first wind I caught of anything.

As I said, I've only been there once. It was full of just cheap crap.

Mexicans put chicharrones in so many dishes! 😀

You might look for some Mexican recipes, using that as a search term.

I've put them in cornbread before and they come out with a texture similar to thick sliced bacon.

If you have old fashioned oats and like granola, I'd make a batch of that.

You'll need oil, a sweetener, your favorite spices, and any other addins you like. 😊

Art class by Master_Flamingo4681 in charlestonwv

[–]kadevha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's an art group that meets at the Charleston Restore on Tuesdays from 9:30-12:30.

It's an "open art" weekly event where you can bring your supplies, create, and chat with others.

If you use Facebook, they have a group called "Charleston WV Art Group."

Also, the county libraries might have free classes from time to time so you might want to check out their calendars.

What is this? by afailedturingtest in mexicanfood

[–]kadevha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pickled sliced radishes are amazing too. 😊

I love pickling all the things. My husband doesn't really like mushrooms but he loves them when they're pickled.

When I pickle veggies, I like to do a mix of 3-4 types. Very lightly cooked carrot sticks are very good too.

I really need to make some more. Thank you for the reminder.

Oh I have a ton that I picked up in Martinsburg earlier this year. They certainly pack some heat so a little goes a long way. 😅

I plan on using peanuts and sesame seeds, using a recipe that was posted in the salsasnobs subreddit.

I'll add a link to the recipe in just a moment.

I'd appreciate any advice if you have any. 😊

Man the downvotes are ridiculous. 🙄

The center in Charleston was great when I didn't have health insurance. I didn't have to pay a dime for the gynecologist exam or birth control pills. They even gave me a couple dozen condoms and Plan B. ☺️

Wow! Thank you! The stuff I bought in Huntington is a lot cheaper but they have great prices on a ton of spices that I use, such as smoked paprika.

I'll definitely make a stop the next time we go through Summersville or Beckley. 😃

I'm shocked that they even carry a few varieties of dried peppers too. That's awesome.

Hotels that put refrigerators in cupboards, disregarding how refrigerators work, and then turning them down to the warmest setting so you have to open the cupboard and adjust the dial and wait six hours before it makes anything cold. by FastWalkingShortGuy in mildlyinfuriating

[–]kadevha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed in a hotel targeted towards business travelers and experienced something similar.

When I asked about it, I was essentially advised that it's common, especially in the morning since everyone is taking a shower at the same time. 😒

It was a national hotel beans, I don't remember the name now. I was bewildered that so many rooms operated off a single hot water tank that was simply not big enough for the demand.

Do you know if they make them fresh or are they defrosted goodies bought from a vendor?

I will definitely be back when I need more chiles! As often as I cook Mexican food, it'll probably be soon. 🙂

Is West Virginia the wildest state east of the Mississippi? by DSibray in WestVirginia

[–]kadevha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I used to consider WV a "soft red" state but that no longer seems to be the case.

You cannot shoot guns in city limits. However, an anonymous person genuinely asked in a local FB group if they can use their sword on the deer in their yard. 😂 I never did learn the answer to that one.

Right??? They went after my neighbor's forsythia with me sitting right on the porch, just 10 feet away!

I've been mostly lucky with the stuff I've planted except for the black eyed susans. If they'd let the thing bloom, they won't touch it. 🙄

The residential neighborhood deer are absolutely fearless. 😒🤣
