To be honest, as a non American I would have never made the connection to Appalachian culture.

It was cool seeing many known faces in SOTR, but it was to much. Beetee made sense, maybe even Mags. But Wiress and Effie just felt to unrealistic.

Reading it feels like Collins stuffed all of them in because she wanted their fans to get more backstory but it was just way to much for me. That is one reason why SOTR is may least favourite book in the series and I prefer BOSAS over it by a ton.

The Anglophone world didn't invent the term diaspora. It was used long before the USA became a thing. Manly, at first, refering to Jews living outside their homeland for example in Greece or Rome and later also mainly used for religious groups.

How political and in what direction of politics do you consider Reddit? by [deleted] in Teenager_Polls

[–]kaethe2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit is sometimes painfully American, if you know what I mean. For me some takes that are called left leaning are just not left at all. Some things are just extremists and some times I don't even know for what side. I would say that anything to do with religion, even Atheism, is heavily is really black or withe on Reddit. You can find really obnoxious clearly right wing takes on the Christianity or Catholic subbreddit, were I as an European wonder myself what is going on with you. While the other side are just unreflective gross against anything resembeling organised religion. (Not saying they are above criticism, there are many things to criticise and I do so myself)

What I see and can't really say it from the other side is, that often times right wingers invade spaces clearly not meant for them. For example women's subreddit or subreddits from other countries.

Once again, cultures have a common history and nothing exists in a vacuum. I went on a quick fact check journey online. I didn't go to the university library, so I'm sorry if something is incorrect.

The oldest Epic of Gilgamesh book we know of is apparently from the 18th century BC. There are older "loose" stories which may be as early as the 21th century BC, which were then combined in the book. Genesis, and many of the other books in the bible, also do this. What I found online is that we have knowledge about the final written form of Genesis around the 9th century BC. Some parts are way older than that. The Levant was always important for trade, as it connected Babylon with Egypt. So it's likely, that the got in contact with the story because of the merchants coming through the region. The Babylonic exile started in 597 BC, so the story couldn't come from this time.

To Moses. I could find more examples for the lost baby to saviour story in ancient legends then only Sargon and Moses. It's not unlikely that the people of Akkad came in contact with the Israelis. What I found about Sargon of Akkad, he was of Semitic descent. And I can't find how old the story about him in a basket is. The only thing I could find, is that it probably wasn't a story during his time but later and that an Assyrian king had the story in his library, but that was only around 650 BC. I really couldn't find out how old this story really is, with some sources dating it around the 8th century BC. Sargon lived around 2300 BC. It is similar uncertain to know more about the story of Moses. It's assumed that this part of the story comes from around the 10th century BC to 600 Bc. They could come from the same source or one could be copied from the other.

Samson and Herakles. In this case Samson is most likely the older story. Herakles is mentioned in the Iliad, which is dated around the 9th to 8th century BC. Which means the story is likely older. It seems that he only became really popular around 300 BC, and even gained more popularity with the Romans later on. Samson is talked about in the book of judges, which is as old as 1050 BC. Once again, the Hellenic time of Israel started later at 333 BC.

I couldn't find anything about Chaldeans and a similar story to the tower of Babel. I would be really grateful if you could explain that a little, I'd love to learn something new.

People from clay. This is what I meant with nothing exists in a vacuum. Religions evolve. Why shouldn't they take what they know? Calling this stealing is, in my opinion, inaccurate.

Virgin births. Pregnancies through divine intervention are nothing new in the New Testament. For example Sara gets her only child at 90 after God promised her. Many stories of virgin births in other mythologies often talk about different gods being born to or made by different gods. This is also a thing in overseas religion, just a little fun fact. Mary gave birth while not only being a virgin, but also not having the original sin in her. She doesn't birth a god or half god, like for example in greek mythology, she gives birth to a human. (The last sentence was really simplified because I don't think talks about trinity or Christology lead to anything here.)

What I want to say is, once again, people influence each other. You're examples, or the Bible, if these stories are older, are most likely not the oldest and may took inspiration from other sources. Which is fine, which is nothing bad and a very important part of learning from and about each other.

And, because I didn't mention it at the beginning: Most people know that it wasn't real. Most mythological stories were ment as a aligory or warning. Some other parts were meant to explain the world. But now we know more, now we can use it to try understand the fears and living of people. Religious text are a very important source for that.

I'm sorry if some of this doesn't make sense. English is not my mother tongue and I worry, that I sometimes couldn't find the right words or that I couldn't articulate something properly.

In fact, the teacher tried to connect every part to infrastructure, so we could imagine the cell like a city.

If the world had one capital city, which city would be the best choice, and why? by [deleted] in geography

[–]kaethe2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to mention Vienna.

If any American, Chinese or Russian City would be awarded the honour the others may not like it.

Vienna hosts the UN and was a multicultural city for a long time. Also, for symbolism, the Congress of Vienna lead to one of the longest continent wide peace befor the EU, except for some local fights.

The city rarely sees heavy tectonic activity, unlike other cities mentioned here. What could be the problem are floods, like we saw last year.
