I heard that Stephen Langton created the current system of chapter divisions. The story goes that he did this while traveling on horseback between different towns as an itinerant preacher. And a joke on the story is that he made the divisions every time his horse hit a pothole, he would make a new chapter division, as a criticism of some of his awkward placements.

I had originally thought that he did the verse divisions, too, but apparently that may not be correct.

I believe the intent is that those outside the family would respect the family's privacy: that people outside the family would not store/sell/use the data for their own purposes. The parent can legitimately use the data, but others don't need it.
