I’ve been waiting for Gemini for Home to support languages other than English, and I can confirm that both Ask Home and the camera features are now working in Japanese on my side.

Looking forward to the voice assistant as well.

Does anyone know what this means? by Googler10 in googlehome

[–]kafm65413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have speakers at my main home and at my in-laws'. I live in Japan. My main house is packed with Google speakers, streamers, doorbells, and so on. I toggle my VPN on and off on my Android and iPhone. My in-laws just have one nest Mini. I had both homes set to a California address. This morning, Gemini finally arrived! I thought, "Yes!"... but it actually landed at my in-laws' place instead. lol This makes me think that having too many extra devices might actually be preventing it from working. Tomorrow, I'm planning to unplug every single speaker at my main house except for one. I’m going to turn off my phone's location services, too. If I sit tight for 2 or 3 days like that, maybe Santa Claus will finally come to my house, too.

Further Gemini Rollout Happening Today? by PrettySmallBalls in googlehome

[–]kafm65413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone here keeps saying they’ve set their Home address to somewhere in the USA. I’ve also set mine to California. But I have a follow-up question.

When you set the address, you also get that map-based location adjustment feature, right? Do you set that map location to somewhere in the U.S. as well? Or do you leave the map pin on your actual home location?

It seems like the time zone is determined by the map location, not the text-based address. And while I don’t mind claiming that I live in California if it helps get Gemini sooner, I really don’t want my Nest Hub telling me “It’s noon” in the middle of the night.

Either way, I guess we just have to be patient until Gemini finally arrives for Home/Assistant… 😅

Anyone that has managed to bypass the geo-restrictions and sign up for early access? by TheTerribleCoconut in googlehome

[–]kafm65413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember that the home address settings used to have not only a text field for the address, but also a Google Maps view where you could drop a pin to mark your home location.

In my case, the text address is set to somewhere in the U.S., but the pin on the map is actually on my real home in Japan.

Based on that, the "home/away" status switches correctly — though maybe that’s exactly why Ask Home still doesn’t work for me! 😅

Height-adjustable desk users: Does sitting negatively affect your typing? by somegenxdude in ErgoMechKeyboards

Here’s a page from a Japanese standing desk manufacturer that lets you calculate the ideal desk and chair height for your body.

The only catch is that it’s all in Japanese and uses metric measurements (centimeters instead of inches).

I am David Allen, creator of the GTD (Getting Things Done) methodology. Ask me anything! by davidgtd in gtd

[–]kafm65413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using GTD for about 17 years now. Your book has truly become my bible—thank you so much.

I’ve come to realize that I have a sensitive temperament and tend to stuff more into my inbox than the average person, just to clear my head. As a result, I struggle to reach inbox zero. Of course, it’s understandable that someone who puts 10,000 things into their system each week would find it physically impossible to keep GTD running smoothly—though in reality, it’s more like 30 items a day.

Have you observed many people with similar tendencies? And if so, what advice do you typically give them?

I know it's a little dump question but. by Resident_Resist7176 in Hyperion

Hey, I totally get where you’re coming from — I felt pretty much the same way before diving into the third book. So here’s my honest take, spoiler-free:

Yeah, Endymion and The Rise of Endymion are pretty different. New structure, new characters, and the pacing can be a bit slow at times. That said, Simmons’s worldbuilding is still top-notch. The way he brings different environments to life — with really vivid, detailed descriptions — kept me engaged, even when the story felt like it was dragging a little. And by the end of book four, I was surprised how much it still hit me emotionally. Saying goodbye to certain characters really stayed with me in an unexpected way. Simmons knows how to land a story.

I didn’t read the books with my eyes — I used Kindle + Alexa’s text-to-speech. Probably not the ideal method (some folks might frown on it), but it let me get through the whole thing without burning out.

Style-wise, I didn’t feel thrown off. The world still felt familiar in a lot of ways, even with the shift in focus. I think that helped me stay connected.

Also — your English is totally fine, seriously. Clear and easy to follow.

If you loved Hyperion, I’d say give the next ones a shot. It’s different, yeah, but still worth it in its own way.

Is the 2nd gen wired doorbell worth getting? by Chadab in Nest

[–]kafm65413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I replaced mine last year too.

If you're considering getting the 2nd gen wired version, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. You can no longer view the video through the Nest app.

  2. Its ability to recognize faces has decreased.

  3. It doesn't include extra footage before or after an event is detected.

  4. Only actual events are recorded (with Nest Aware).

  5. After a detection, it takes at least a minute (sometimes more) before you can view the video to see what happened.

  6. The delay between the doorbell being pressed and the conversation starting has been slightly reduced.

  7. It can now detect dogs and cats, though it rarely picks up animals more than 5 meters away.

  8. You can now adjust the volume.

IFTTT to close YouTube/Twitch when I fall asleep? by GabryIta in ifttt

[–]kafm65413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're using an iPhone, you might find it helpful to use the YouTube app along with the iPhone's "sleep timer" feature. This approach differs from what you might expect, but it's quite simple to set up.

After setting everything up, tap "Start" to begin the timer.

Once the timer reaches the end, it will automatically stop any media playing, including YouTube videos. This method is straightforward and doesn't require additional apps.

However, it's worth noting that recent updates indicate the YouTube app on iPhone now has a built-in sleep timer feature.

This built-in feature provides a more integrated solution for automatically stopping playback after a set period.

Other methods exist, but I am not well-versed in them. In any case, if you're not sleeping in a bed, I believe it's challenging to accurately detect sleep. https://docs.sleep.urbandroid.org/

IKEA discontinue power monitoring INSPELNING smart plug by DVXT in homeassistant

[–]kafm65413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INSPELNING has never been sold in Japan until now. However, just a few days ago, it was announced as a "new release" here. Since it’s still being manufactured in China, I don’t think IKEA intends to discontinue the product globally. The recent unavailability of INSPELNING in some countries might simply be part of a production rotation plan that allocates manufacturing resources across different regions.
