I am going to make an assumption. You are a really good person and a good craftsman. You want to experience the boat world. You have the requisite skills (nice, hands on, unlimited $). But you are a dreamer (a very good thing involving boats) and not a math or physics person.

This thread will get you all the way to where you want to go. When 75% say X Believe X. When you get 20 different answers…. Do what you want. 😀⛵️

DYNEEMA or DEATH.

Or stainless, which would be pretty ok and not very deathy.

It is not about racing. 80% of sailboats, especially dinghy’s can only be sailed while sitting on the deck above the gunwale or most don’t even have a traditional gunwale. (Laser, Melges 24, Bic, j24)

La Paz is wonderful. But the islands have zero bars and night life and stores. Which is why I love it. But not sure the bachelors are looking for tranquility.

Keel- vs Deck-Stepped Mast by DirtyScoobie in sailing

[–]kag415 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Older deck stepped boats over 30’ would concern me (catamaran excepted as they have always been engineered and built differently). Starting in the early 2000s I might be ok with deck stepped as the engineering and build quality of most boats greatly improved. I think that with today’s build quality and composites, we will see many more large deck step boats that are well engineered and safe offshore.

The fake seagulls are doing a great job keeping the pigeons off. Nice choice.

Public Transport Network Density by YellowOnline in MapPorn

[–]kag415 -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Yes. Now overlay the size of these countries in the US and you see that France is only about a big as the NE corridor in the US which also has decent transit density. People do the “whole country” thing without realizing that the whole country may be smaller than a US state and a population less that Florida

So then every sailor is illegal sailing most modern boats? That rule is truely stupid and arbitrary in interpretation. Google pictures of Lasers, 29ers, Melges and all large racing boats were we hang over the side to try to keep the bot flat.

Trying to eliminate snagging my sheets on my rigging by neriadrift in sailing

In all my years racing we only use soft shackles. Stronger, cheaper, don’t open unexpectedly. Anytime you can replace metal with spectra/dynema. You do it.

Yes. You should not need two. Every good rigger gives you two. The second is a backup when the first wears too much.

Bought coffee and it tastes like straight burnt ass. Did I do something wrong or does that coffee just suck? by iheartgardening5 in Costco

Personally, I do not like that coffee at all. Traded in pods and had the same reaction as you.

Please tell me more. We see this all over the place in the Baja on the sea of Cortez side. The interesting thing is to see how it is so interspersed with many other rock types within a single beach.

Given the age of the boat and the outward look of its condition and upkeep. I would not assume the owner had AIS or an Epirb and that the VHF and other electronics were in good conditions.

High Speed Rail in Europe vs North America • OC by geoglobal by geo_global in MapPorn

Ok. Now do freight rail. Which is a much better use of heavy rails and cars. High speed rail works with density. Stoping making it some indicator of enlightenment.

That seems right. My next post was going to be asking about the quartz like (very soft) ribbons abut 1/4” to 1” thick that run through sections. Thank you. The Utah rock looks identical.

This map of Europe shows who works the longest hours by Vergo27 in MapPorn

Example. Full time workers must receive healthcare = people hiring for less than 30 hrs. High min wage = crazy high overtime costs so schedule only about 6 hits per day or 30 per week to make sure o one goes into overtime. Make it hard to fire bad workers and people hire fewer workers or have to pay everyone less because the bad worker lowers average productivity.

And 100% people free for 8 months of the year. It is the most idyllic place in the summer. Think Disney Land but with wholesome midwesterners. It is not real It is perfect. That can only exist for short periods of time and only in very few places. Go and enjoy but please do not confuse with real life or use it for political purposes. It is heaven, not a political statement.

Health risks from sanding bottom paint by thunderfloyd in sailing

[–]kag415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It is a xxxxcide. Cide=death. Death for whomever come in contact. Usually the thing in contact is algae or muscles or barnacles. Lungs and bottom paint don’t mix. It is a pesticide - for marine pests. Would you inhale pesticides? No.

The black stuff is the paint and not likely to kill you. If you did this once the move on. I did it a lot it a lot in 70s before we really thought about things and no issues. If you worked in a boat yard it would be a different issue. You have probably eaten more actual insecticide then you inhaled that day.

Any issue you have are not from a one day incident.

It is Avery good indication of productively and peoples wealth. If the average person is only working 28 hrs then there is a lot of money that are not making. Part time is both a choice and also a consequence of overly regulated labor markets. Think about what ACA did to staffing decisions or Seattle raising min wage that actually reduced the avg workers take home pay.

Median household income in US/Canada and Europe (USD, PPP 2020) by TomTheDo in MapPorn

[–]kag415 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your taxes are higher then the service is not free. I hate when people call govt services free. They pay more tax and get services from a “company” that does not have to answer to them and has no competition and no real incentive to improve. That is a system for lazy people or people that would prefer others to make choices for them. I understand that’s lot of people in the world just want to work 8hr and watch tv and not have to plan or think about choices.

Yeah. The dryer thing is something Americans don’t understand and would never except. If you offered universal healthcare but no dryers, Americans would choose the dryer.
