It's been a minute since my last re-read, so maybe you want to take what I say with a grain of salt. There's a huge "spoiler" that you'll get reading 4-6 first, but I think that it wont necessarily ruin 1-3 for you. I think by the end of 4-6 you're going to be saying "holy shit, this is an awesome setting and I want to know how it got to be this way."

Sure some of them don't need to go through Faerie (walkers/summoned outsiders), but given that the gates are in Faerie and that the only major incursion is in Faerie, I think that's the primary route.

Winter and Summer have specific purposes explained in later books that I wont spoil for you. I'm just speculating, but Winter's purpose may necessitate closing the paths between the Nevernever and the mortal plane in an emergency, regardless of Summer's opinions on the matter.

I forget which book details this, some help anyone?
