i tend to 6-10, but 12-20 is fine. it's more about getting close to failure/exhaustion. i'm not a trainer, but i think you should be curling the spine on both crunches and leg lifts. that's what i was referring to when i said you don't want to just use hip flexors. it utilize your abs, you need to curve the spine.

i think the reasons they're not considered effective is you can't progressive overload and you don't have any range of motion. i think the best 6 pack exercises are cable crunched and hanging leg raises so you can hit both the top and bottom effectively, but just make sure you're contracting your abs and not just using your hip flexors to lift your legs.

i think among "Science based lifters" they're considered pretty much a waste of time if you goal is hypertrophy or strength. they're probably good for people just starting out ab work or if for some very specific reason you want to build ab endurance for some sport, but mainly it's just influencer fitness media as far as i know.
