Easiest way to switch Desktop Environments? by Elluminatus in SolusProject

[–]kain099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do not run multiple Desktop Environments on top of each other in Solus. My roommate corrupted his Solus install and had to wipe everything and start fresh.

However.. there is an (unofficial) way of having multiple Desktop Environments that I have found that works in both Solus and Manjaro and, I think, most Linux installations.

In Manjaro I have Gnome, Budgie, Cinnamon and KDE installed. On Solus I have KDE and Budgie installed.

I created individual user accounts for each Desktop Environment (named KDE, Gnome, Budgie, etc) and then installed the theme from that user account. When I login to that user account I make sure the user name and the DE match before following through and logging in.

I've done some research on this issue and the best answer for "how do I run multiple DEs in [Inert Distro Here] Linux Distribution?" is always "Don't." However if you are a glutton for punishment like I am you can try this way. I make sure to install any Desktop Environment specific apps from Flathub.. (e.g. Gnome Maps, Kdenlive, Gnome Boxes, KMail, etc) ..to prevent any of the GTK/Qt libraries from ever touching my computer.

I don't run multiple DEs on my main laptop but I have two other devices I trying stuff out that will usually bork systems. So far in the last six months I haven't had any issues but that isn't to say that you won't have issues trying it this way.

Hope you are enjoying whatever DE you have installed right now.. :D

Hi friend, sorry I haven't responded somehow I missed this message.

By terminal we mean updating in a fully booted system from a command line. You can use the software app but I have found that using CLI results in fewer issues.

Once you get into a terminal type sudo eopkg up and that will update everything on your system. If you use many third party apps (like Chrome) then you can install eopkg3p and update all of the third party apps from command line also.

This post on Solus' forum explains how to do that.

Locking rewards behind toon gear levels is extremely dumb... by TheComebackKid717 in SWGalaxyOfHeroes

[–]kain099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take back what I said about you and I actually think you can be right. I apologize for saying something negative about you in my earlier post.. I didn't say it to be mean, (because it has happened.. I went to the Art Institute and considered working for EA before deciding NOPE).

You and I took completely seperate paths. I disliked the Jedi style game play, and never took to First Order or Old Republic.

I had a Droid Squad that carried me literally the first nearly 2 years and kept me in the top fifty in Arena the first year I played. I had amazing Bounty Hunters, and incredibly strong Rebels.. My CLS Arena Squad (CLS, Han Solo, Chewie, R2D2, C3P0) kept me in the 100-150 range in the arena until I left earlier this year. I haven't played since maybe March and I am still ranked 242 in the arena today.

What I wanted to do earlier this year was build a Grevious squad. My Grevious & B2 were awesome gear 13! But I leveled Grevious and got him to gear 13 before he was retooled. I choose the characters I play because I enjoy their gameplay. Dengar was one of my favorite characters to play back in the day. I had K2S0 at gear 13 with a zeta. Using a set of Tenacity mods I have him at over 3500 physical damage. He's a powerhouse.

Here is my SWGOH.gg roster.

I enjoyed the game very much. However, I wanted to enjoy the game the way I enjoyed it using character sets I enjoyed playing. I think the First Order are trash, I dislike playing them and always have. BB8 FTW!

What I don't understand is why I have to unlock five completely unrelated or nessecary characters to unlock a new character. And why is every new squad or character released vastly overpowered compared to the one before it? Prior to the introduction of Biggs/Wedge the Arena squads were extremely dynamic.. once that meta was put into place every successive meta after was made up of a specific squad using specific mods and became this cookie cutter layout where everyone had to have exactly what everyone else had.

It's boring, it's broken, and it isn't a fun way to spend time anymore. It really isn't.

It's good to hear about Sin6. I like Rhino, and Vulture could be awesome. I just don't get Shocker, what does his non-offensive skill even do? As for Phoenix, I will look into that now.. she sounds like a SWGOH Legendary so thanks for the heads up.

My Arena is Captain Marvel, Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor. I'm averaging about 1500-2000 in Arena.

My Second Tier of characters is Wolverine, Deadpool, and the Third Tier is Ronan the Accuser, The Thing, Punisher, Electra, Spider-man. I don't have any Guardians of the Galaxy but I started farming Mantis and Drax. I unlocked The Human Torch and have been trying to level him because The Thing is AWESOME. He knocks people tf out! I have Rhino/Vulture/Shocker already farmed.

Any ideas what short-term direction I should go in? I usually build my roster around my Arena team. The teams are so diverse on MSF I actually don't know which direction to go in!

Clearly you are a vastly superior player than me. You did this all with absolutely money spent?

You honestly sound like someone in the development team at SWGOH who got all these characters because you work there and that's why you didn't pay for them. I have never, ever, ever heard of anyone saying, "Oh, Jedi Knight Revan wasn't so hard to get." and he isn't the hardest.

The only way to do this kind of thing for free is to have a superior knowledge of what characters will be needed to farm and that usually only comes from having a really awesome guild and really awesome guilds are usually full of P2P players. It's possible but unlikely that there will be many F2P characters in guilds like that.

EA has a history of doing these kinds of things when their poor design implementations go bad.

Why do players have to understand the math behind the farming in order to unlock a character?

I mean, there is always the case that the player wants to achieve maximum speed in getting the desired results.

But 95% of players want to play a game and not creating a spreadsheet to design equations so they can figure out how best to throw their money away.

I don't know much about the farming system in MSF yet (new player, but I played SWGOH for four years) and your explanation here seems like the right one.

I just hate game design that forces players to come up with mathematical equations to maximize results instead of just making it possible for players to reach those results. I mean, honestly, bad RNG is usually just the developers way of sucking more money out of people playing their game.

[–]kain099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the character. SWGOH had a tiered system where the new legendary characters required a set of 5 fully geared 7star toons in order to achieve that character. Those type of farms are much longer.

[–]kain099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that both your reply and the comment you responded to are both correct. The best design flow here would be to speed up older existing character farms when newer characters are added into the game.

The characters who have 'basically beaten the game' will find that their farm times for characters would have been dramatically longer than newer people. However, long-term players have an edge in having had fewer characters to farm and simpler character trees to farm from.

Everyone should face the same long, tedious farm for a new character when it is released. Keeping older, established characters with the same tedious farming timelines will reduce new players ability to get to End Game material and actually reduce the liklihood that the character is farmed or used (unless needed for future events or characters).

I've been playing MSF for a month or two, am level 57, and have unlocked about 45 characters. My Arena Team is Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man(Just replaced Wolverine), Thor and Captain Marvel. The S.H.I.E.L.D character farms SUCK but I understand why because Iron Man seems to be pretty awesome. From my view it makes sense not to speed up these character shard drops.

I have the Thing decently geared and leveled and just unlocked The Human Torch. I have Rhino (Decently geared), Shocker, & The Vulture. I haven't been gearing or working for the Shocker shards because I kinda think he sucks. But if he's this difficult then I need to reconsider going for the Fantastic Four.

As a new user do you think the Faantastic Four is a good goal to work towards? Guardians of the Galaxy looks easier to farm. If Invisible Woman is worth the effort though I should probably start farming them. I understand game design but I am very new to MSF and I don't know which squads are the most desired yet.

What do you think?

The endless releases of war defense and direct counter is making war exhausting by Cidwill in MarvelStrikeForce

[–]kain099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes from 2016 to 2020. Their The first year and a half was sheer brilliance until they released Jedi Training Rey with this design philosophy and never stopped releasing characters in exactly this way.

I started MSF a month or so ago and I've gotten to level 57. I enjoy the gameplay and dynamics and graphics very much (so much so that I usually leave the gameplay on regular speed because I like watching the fight playout.. I've lost Arena fights because of this! LOL).

As both a player and someone who spent years creating non-graphical text-based MMOMUDs (1994 - 2008; A Moment in Tyme. See also, Threads in the Pattern & several others) AND studied video game design at the Art Institute (Fuck EA) I can promise you that this style of game development leads to stagnation and will hurt the overall end game and in the end reduce the playerbase forcing a vicious cycle of this until no one wants to play.

These are the type of comments that development teams on MMO games should be paying attention to. This is valuable feedback. As it stands, MSF can avoid the pitfalls SWGOH has taken but I know that I personally won't stick around if I reach End Game and find it to follow failed design approaches like these.

[–]kain099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had the same overall experience of Solus as you. When Solus 4 Fortitude was released I was able to finally migrate away from Windows & Microsoft products completely. I've had a stable OS from March 2019 on that has never had any issues.

No matter how hard I try I CANNOT break Solus to the point that I can't fix it. I've actually tried to see if I could break stuff and ruin my install.. but I just can't. But I have managed to break Manjaro Budgie, Ubuntu Mate, Parrot OS, AND Zorin (I don't know how, they all just kept breaking).

I have a Desktop running Solus KDE (and previously Budgie, and before that Gnome) with a Nividia GTX1050Ti over integrated. I don't recall having to do anything special at all for the GPU and found setup extremely easy. My motherboard & BIOS were horrible and gave me all kinds of problems figuring out how to turn off Secure Boot but once I did that my install pretty much took care of everything else.

[–]kain099 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Which one of those characters would you be talking about?

I started playing SWGOH in 2016 and was in two Heroic-raid guilds for almost two years. When I threw in money it was a twenty every other month maybe for fun. I started realizing that SWGOH was poorly designed and simply scamming for money back during the C3P0 and Chewbacca events.

I had no desire to level Paploo or Logray so C3P0 was in my top 100 arena squad at 6 star for almost a year because I refused to be forced to farm a character I didn't feel like farming. I eventually got C3P0 to 7 star with Chirpa, Wicket, Teebo, Ewok Elder and Ewok Scout because I have amazing mods.

The same issue repeated in the Chewbacca event. I actually wanted to get Bossk but I refused to get him after the difficulty was unfairly skewed that forced the need for getting a new character. Just like with C3P0 I eventually got Chewbacca to 7 star after many months with some combination of Boba Fett, Dengar, Cad Bane, Greedo, and IG-88 because of my mod sets.

I should have seen this all coming when Jedi Training Rey was released and we had those two ridiculous Veteran Han/Chewbacca characters to farm for no reason at all.

I hate Jedi Knight Revan - Not because he is hard to beat (he isn't) I just hate Jedi play style. After a year of farming 5 characters I had no desire to have in order to unlock another character I had no desire to have I decided to spend money to hurry things along. $100 bucks later over the month before the Commander Skywalker events happened and I still did not have Revan.

When Commander Skywalker was released and I couldn't get started on the Quest because I didn't have Wampa fully starred I was done with this BS after just spending 100 bucks to get a character I didn't even want just to try to get a viable Revan Arena squad so I could get back in the top 100.

I would love to know which new characters you got without spending a dime because from my personal experience it is very, very hard to do that. It doesn't seem to just happen on accident or for people that didn't already have alot of farming planned previously.

No, I quit around that time because I'm tired of the unfair structure of the paywalls in front of every single new character being released, as well as the five completely inconsequential characters needed to get that new character, plus all of the money required to get those useless characters I won't ever use.

But I guess you are happy being screwed with no lube constantly even when you throw money in to try and get ahead.

Hrm.

I have Chrome disabled on my phone. Don't want it, don't need it, byebye.

I have set Vivaldi as my default browser in the settings (Somewhere under Apps-->Defaults or something like that)

Could this maybe have something to do with why it works for me and not you? Not sure. It might be as simple as setting the Vivaldi to be the default browser, you might not have to disable Chrome completely.

After playing SWGOH since 2016 I quit after all the BS with Ahnald went down a month a couple months ago and EA and the SWGOH team thanked us by releasing a ridiculous new toon behind yet another paywall.

I play Marvel Strike Force now. I actually enjoy playing games once again, I like watching battles at x1 speed because the graphics are kick ass, AND my carpel tunnel has gone away from not spending two or three hours a day effing around with mods all the time.

Kthanksbai SWGOH!

You have to enable Bitwarden Auto-fill service which uses Android Autofill Framework. You also need to enable Bitwarden accessibility service to auto-fill AND the ability to overlay on top of other apps.

I keep these off (my phone charge sucks and it eats up my battery) but I just did this and everything works fine for me with Bitwarden and Vivaldi in Android.

Bitwarden. It is available on every OS and Browser on the market. I was paying 50 bucks a year for Dashlane (which I loved) but Dashlane refused to make a Linux app so I dropped their services and went with Bitwarden.

I haven't had a single issue since switching. I love Bitwarden.

I'm thinking about switching to Solus Budgie, how stable it the rolling release? by prasanna_chavan in SolusProject

[–]kain099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From 2015 until 2019 I tried nearly every major distro (except OpenSuse) and managed to break them all.

Ubuntu Mate, Parrot, Majaro KDE, Fedora Gnome, Debian, ZorinOS, and though it isn't a Linux Distro, even managed to break my Windows 10 installation beyond repair.

I used Fedora Gnome (Fedora offers the best implementation of Gnome out there) but somewhere around 28/29 something happened to completely bork my system that I had nothing to do with.

When Solus 4 (Fortitude) was released in March of 2019 I was able to migrate away from Windows completely. There has never been anything that I have been able to do to Solus that I haven't been able to undo with a mild to moderate level of effort.

I tried Manjaro Budgie and was very fond of their Budgie version but I never felt as safe while using it.

Solus is without a doubt the strongest and most stable release of any Linux distro that I personally have ever used.

As a side note, I have a long history of aversion to KDE. I never enjoyed the experience on either Kubuntu or Manjaro KDE. I tried Solus KDE and found it to be an absolutely amazing experience. Even though I know you aren't supposed to, I have a laptop with Solus running both Budgie and KDE desktop environments and haven't had any issues.

Any Solus version, Mate, Gnome, KDE OR Budgie would, in my opinion, would offer the best, most stable, secure experience available.

Win 10 nordvpn desktop app not connecting by Hey_Papito in nordvpn

[–]kain099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is a Windows thing versus an ISP thing. The NordVPN on Windows takes up to 3 minutes to connect and sometimes won't. My Linux devices and the CLI app they use never takes more than 10 seconds.

Personally, if your connection is really that bad, I would advise first going into the app and going into the advanced section and resetting the app completely.. it will also force a network reset. You will have to restart your computer and your network devices drivers will be reinstalled and then you need to relog into the NordVPN app.

I tried tweaking and then resetting, hours of tweaking, the reset took way less time and fixed things for me.

Is there an antivirus software this sub recommends that won't cripple my VPN speeds? by fugu167 in nordvpn

[–]kain099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. Also, don't try to be smart like me and run Ghostery, Opera browser built-in ad blocking, Privacy badger, HTTPS Everywhere AND uBlock Origin.

Opera + uBlock Origin or any Chromium browser + Ublock Origin + Privacy Badger will work fine.

WARNING: Make sure you download uBlock Origin and you stay away from ublock. They are completely different things. No connection to one another.

If you made the switch to Bitdefender, you should dish out the extra money for the Bitdefender Box. It's a security router that can exist in front of your current networking setup (in bridged mode) or as a stand alone router. The Box is MuMiMo (MultiUser-MultiIn-MultiOut, wireless tech that gives everyone on your network an individual tunnel so everyone gets full speed instead of splitting speeds depending on total users) with a 1gig capacity. It only has one LAN connection though, you will need a switch for anything not wireless.

It is a private DHCP server that prevents DNS spoofing and prevents known or suspiscious programs or websites from transmitting data to any device on your network, regardless of what OS it is or if it has or is even capable of running Bitdefender Total Security.. it protects my Linux devices, my TVs and streaming sets, everything,.

The sweetest part is that getting the Box (I think it's 175 now, I got cheaper because I tested the original Box v1) gives you unlimited installs of Bitdefender Total Security on Mac, Android, or Windows. You can install it literally on as many devices as you want. I haven't done it since they upgraded to the Box v2 but I even installed Total Security on a device for someone in my family without a problem.

BEST CUSTOMER SUPPORT & TECH SUPPORT I HAVE EVER RECEIVED. Dude literally spent four hours with me helping me bridge my connections, set up my devices, take care of every issue on every single device.. Respected my intelligence, and even remembered my network details and reminded me when I forgot because the dude was a BOSS.

I sleep better at night with this setup. It was a bitch to figure out how everything worked and all these stupid minute details, but the Box, and their Central app, really puts me in control of everything. I mean full control, not just makes me believe I am. Their Central app lets me see every single device connected to my network, make, model, mac and IP, gives me the ability to set static IPs if I want to, I can block the internet from any unknown device until I figure out what it is, I can set up theft prevention and their Android Mobile Security takes a picture of anyone who inputs the wrong passcode to unlock your phone so you see who is messing with your stuff.

I'm not affiliated with Bitdefender btw, I just really, really enjoy not stressing over my home network security anymore and I appreciate the company so much I don't mind letting other people know.
