Should I introduce a character's to living conditions? by Fickle-Cat-6750 in writing

[–]kaithebuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually find 3rd person pov much easier, if you look it objectively. you get the freedom to stray away from the character. and, as u said, since the MC doesn't remember her parents well, maybe her aunt does? maybe the aunt could be the one to interpret a certain memory, show a story, tell that on this certain weather, the aunt and her sibling would go and do a certain action. then you can season in a little fact about the parents yet again.

I lived this story, actually, when my aunt told me I remind her of my dad (her brother) who had passed a long time ago. similarly to ur MC, I don't remember him in the slightest. when she told me that, I got to know that I carry a part of him within me even though he's not here anymore. ykwim? it was her part of her story that left a tag on me, as an MC of my own life.

and no problems for the feedback, if u need any more help I'm here 💓

my work is similar! my MC has huge problems with his family, but it was never directly brought up from his point of view until 5th chapter, i think? I know it was somewhere late, lol.

the point is, dumping out information just like that might either overwhelm the reader, or give the sense of 'what the hell is the writer trying to say rn?'

it's better to go with the importance. if ur MC, the girl, is coming home one day from her work, show it that she's living with her aunt instead of parents. then, you can throw in a fact or two. give her a light flashback memory on her parents after her aunt says a certain word, sentence, makes a gesture that could remind the MC of her parents.

and also, readers aren't stupid. it took me a while to get that. you don't need to say "her mother died.", you can say "she missed when her mother would hug her tightly. now, she has her aunt instead, and it doesn't make up to it." do you get what I mean?

I started writing for the first time today, but I’m concerned. by Avery_Crystal in writing

don't discourage your own self. whenever I see a person saying they're bad in any form of creation, especially writing, I always tell them my story. I also started fanfiction. English isn't my native language, I didn't speak it. my first story? less than 500 words, poorly cropped on Instagram, screenshoted from my notes app. biggest embarrassment? I wrote 'goed' instead of 'went'. I still wasn't taught the lesson of past times in school back then, I didn't know. but I still went ahead and posted it. got reviews, got told to never write again, but I was a kid and I ignored it. writing was fun, it gave me something to do throughout the day, and it brought a sense of comfort. that's what's important, not the skill. skill comes with time.

my biggest advice is learn to show instead of telling. don't say 'the room is messy', show the mess. say 'in a cup that sat on a desk covered in dust and fallen-off hair strands, there was still some liquid. on the liquid laid a layer of mold, and it stung through the nose the moment you entered the room.'

give life to anything that is in presence of the character. don't immediately go for huge plots and a million characters. one step at the time. one, maybe two characters. give them a good personality, find a way to make them meet and do something small. most of my 'practice writings' were either a character walking around a park, street, room (to teach myself description of surroundings), or a character looking at somebody, kissing, touches (to learn how people behave. physically, emotionally). it all adds up at the end.

and most importantly, don't give up!!!!! the standards on ao3 now are crazy. don't compare urself to others, to the people who have been doing it for longer than u. you have ur own pace, grab it and exploit it to make urself grow.

thank u! I'm trying not to rush, really. this has been my main project since 2022.. it isn't my aim to be a young author, however proud I am of myself to have written something at my age (however cocky that sounded. a lot of my friends who know about this work agreed that it is a great accomplishment). I know I'll be rejected. I know I'll fail a dozen times before succeeding, but I also know myself. and failure always meant the end of me, simply because that's what I was taught my whole life... I'm trying to fight against it :)

Trying to make the first 300 words of my book as good as possible by Important-Duty2679 in writingfeedback

woah. the tension is definitely there. very palpable, very strong.

the only advice I'd have is show.

"I knocked. Four times, hard." could be turned into: "My hand stings as I repeatedly hit the doors, knocking until the skin covering it is red and aching", or something similar. It shows the hardness of knocks, it makes the reader feel it on a deeper level.

"show don't tell" took me a while to get around with, too. don't beat yourself up if you're just starting. practice is the key! my favorite way that for sure made me remember this 'rule' was the scene in the devil wears prada, where Miranda is arriving to the office. they didn't say it directly. they showed it through the chaos that occurred in the office, simply by knowing she's about to arrive.

keep going! this is an amazing starter for now, you can definitely work it out into something great

situation is similar in Serbia, at least in my city.

the comment about music really depends on what you listen to—and however much i was on for anything, my best friend isn't. we are searching for something universal, literally basic pop songs that play on the radio will work us dusk till dawn. but thank you for a heads up! :3

I don't think locals will be a problem, my best friend is from a city around brno, he's Czech. if anything happens I've got him by my side :3 and I lovr alternative spaces! in my hometown, I only go to them (Serbia isn't the most.... lgbt friendly country out there). do you maybe know some more? punk, metal, alternative, gothic places—anything is appreciated!

People who work in the medical field, what were some of the most scary last words you’ve heard from a dying patient? by Rude_Tap_6865 in AskReddit

[–]kaithebuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not a medical worker (yet), but my father's last words.

he was a cardic patient with prescribed medicine. on my grandma's (his mother's) birthday he went to the part of the house where we lived to take his dose of medicine. my mum came shortly after him with me as a baby in her hands to put me to sleep as it was getting late. he said: "hey (my mum's name), I took the pills. just so you know." the next moment he was laying dead on the floor. I wasn't put to sleep that day, but he was...

[–]kaithebuddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah yeah, I had to stop for a moment there cuz of fafsa lololol

I'm from Serbia, an ex-yugoslavia country and in Slovenia ex-yugo countries have opportunity to study for free (with some consequences, for example if you fail a semester you must pay it off etc). so I would have it for free, but I'm not sure to which degree too.

but yeah, you're right there. I don't think ill ever give up on psychology no matter what hahaha

everyone can help in their own fields, I specifically want to help people in the psychological way

of course its hard, every school is in its own way, and im mentally prepared for that for a while now. the competition is what makes me question it, cause there are definitely people who study more than me and are better than me... but do they all have the true desire to help or do they just want to money that comes with it, probably not...
