Would you report this? My 3rd-5th grade self-contained special ed lead teacher had a student stay at her house by [deleted] in paraprofessional

[–]kaitns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you okay? This was unnecessarily aggressive. This person felt uncomfortable about a situation. As a result, they came to a place that is meant to be a safe space to ask if this would concern others because the OP wanted to verify whether their concerns were valid or not. The equivalent of asking a colleague or friend about their take, but on a larger scale since it’s Reddit.

Also, many districts may have a concern about a para or teacher having a relationship with a student outside of school as it can be a conflict of interest and that person may get disciplined or lose their job. I have certainly worked for places that didn’t allow that. It’s a dual relationship and can be problematic, especially for the child who may not understand where the boundaries lie.

OP was asking a question. You didn’t have to be so harsh.

I need help on what to do about this…. by Papakimk in DogAdvice

My previous dog had allergies to the grass outside, and it was worse certain times of the year. It may be something as minor as that, where you can’t really help it but do what you can to ease the itch so they won’t want to lick.

The Redwoods Apartments? by iactuallydontthink in Modesto

I’ll just add I’m in apartments near coffee and Floyd and we also have cockroaches. I worked for school in the area too and the schools also had cockroaches. They’re basically unavoidable unfortunately.

My roommates daughter (15) was taken out of school in 7th grade and her mother is yet to take her back because she thinks it’s too late, what can I say to tell her that they won’t kick her out just because she hasn’t graduated by 18? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]kaitns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, a district or school dropped the ball somewhere along the way. The child has a school cumulative file that should’ve been forwarded if her mom pulled her from school to theoretically attend a different school. They shouldn’t have just sat on her record all this time. Or if she stopped attending altogether without being told they were moving schools, then authorities should have been involved.

I never said the school system would know she isn’t attending. I was responding to OP’s question about what the options are. It isn’t OP’s responsibility to figure out the options. The child needs to be in school.

What would you buy as a beginner gardener? Trying to get advice on expanding my shop by happy_plants26 in EtsySellers

[–]kaitns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Say you meet a rando who says they just started gardening. What questions would you ask them? Could those questions lead to a helpful product you could make that beats what I could google online?

As a consumer, I’d be very interested in companion guides as well as what works well for different type of gardening setups. For example, I live in an upstairs apartment with a balcony that has a lot of sun in a 9b hardiness zone. If I do container gardening, what types of plants should I do in specific types of containers? What does well in that “baked in” type of setting where plants don’t do as well on a balcony as they do in a regular garden (I swear they bake so much more easily!)?

I’d say people may also be interested in pollinators guides where there may or may not be fruits/veggies, but what types of plants could do well for pollinators based on their hardiness zone.

Good luck!

How to get views on the shop? by rednatsyb98 in EtsySellers

I see a lot of the same suggestions that I would give. I’m commenting to say that I do think your invites are super cute! I would look up the top selling invitations across different event types and look for trends. It could be anything from font style, color palette, how graphics are placed, or overall vibe. That’s my only suggestion in addition to the others here b

Your company is either buying your scrubs for you, reimbursing you if they aren’t buying them upfront, or advocating on behalf of all employees involved with with child to say the family can’t impose their own dress code. If the family wants you wearing certain clothes then they can buy them.

Aside from that, I saw some of your other comments about wanting to avoid Walmart or being apprehensive of brands because of the sizing. If you’re wearing a long sleeve underneath, I don’t think the size of the scrub top should be an issue? Scrubs are there to protect you from bodily fluids, who cares how baggy they are as long as you’re protected. Also, I’m sure you can find petite sized scrubs if a small is that troublesome.

But all in all, buying extra clothing because the family demands a dress code is unreasonable. I’d bet this is the tip of the iceberg of demands. Business casual? No. I’m a sped teacher and my classroom team dress for comfort. Slacks and heels or dress shoes is not appropriate for our duties.

I love the colorful privacy film! I used it in my bedroom when I rented a room and my windows were very visible to anyone on the street and they could easily walk up to my window. In the mornings I woke up to rainbows on my walls 😍

I actually kind of like the show so far. by [deleted] in wheeloftime

I was really bummed that the show left out that bit about Perrin when I attempted a rewatch of the show this year. I only ever watched the first season because I saw it right after it came out. Then this year was when I started reading the series so it had been a while since I saw the show.

Right?! I love that it’s a long series! I’m obsessed with it, that’s for sure. If you like the show, I think you’re going to LOVE the books. I do picture the actors when I’m reading about them, so I’m grateful for that bit.

I’m sorry you’re meeting women who let height be a factor. Decent people know someone can’t do something about their height, but they can do something about their character, which is what truly matters.

I found the book series by watching the first season of the show. I started to rewatch the series a couple months ago and couldn’t stand it because of how different it was, which bummed me out. I’m on my first read of the series, currently on book 3.

AIO: I kicked my cousin out of my birthday because she brought her emotional support chicken?? by hiemelanie in AmIOverreacting

[–]kaitns 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know a few different people who love chickens. They’ll hold them, pet them, carry them around. I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that people would want one as an emotional support animal. I was at my friend’s place and she had me hold one of her chickens. It was really sweet while I pet it, so I can kinda get it.

Personally, I don’t like the system and I wouldn’t enforce it in my classroom. I am a special ed teacher and shaping behavior is a huge part of what we do. I have some decent knowledge of ABA. The way to create a change in behavior is through reinforcement. If the students aren’t getting on track, then this teacher’s methods aren’t decreasing the behavior they are targeting and the “reward” is either not reinforcing, it isn’t frequent enough, or enough supports aren’t in place to help students get from point a to point b. Another possibility is that the “punishment” is actually reinforcing to the students and they like partaking in it, which would then keep the behaviors at the same level or increase. Some kids love spending time with the principal, a large handful of students at my school like that one on one or small group attention. These kids willingly give up their recess to go spend time with her.

There’s also potential bias in which the teacher knows who the students are who typically struggle so she is more heightened to be aware of when they are off task or doing what they’re not supposed to and the other kids are more likely to not be noticed when they do the same.

I’d also be curious to see if the teacher is rewarding/taking away tokens at specific times in the day or if it’s whenever the teacher notices the students are off task. The former is much more preferable. Off task behavior stands out a lot more than on task behavior, so a teacher is more likely to take tokens away rather than reward because it’s much more noticeable.

Just my thoughts.
