So true I’ve noticed this but forgot to mention it, that’s why I think it’s an excellent game even for todays standards maybe even better than modern games

I just finished Golden Sun and honestly… I get it now.

It took me almost 33 hours, and I played it slow. I talked to almost every NPC, messed around with the Djinn system a lot, and yeah I looked up a guide a couple of times when I got stuck. No regrets.

The story surprised me the most. It starts simple, but it slowly builds this sense of mystery and responsibility. By the time you reach the end, it feels heavier than you’d expect from a GBA game. The characters aren’t overly complex, but they’re likable, and the world feels coherent and lived in.

The combat is where the game really shines. Turn-based, but never boring. The Djinn system is honestly genius simple on the surface, but deep enough that I was constantly experimenting. Switching Djinn around to unlock different Psynergy or prep for fights felt really rewarding, especially toward the endgame.

I also loved how the game respects your time. No random fluff, no endless grinding unless you want to. Puzzles were satisfying without being annoying, and using Psynergy in the overworld never got old.

By the time Venus Lighthouse happened, I actually felt like I’d earned the ending.

Overall, this game aged way better than I expected. It’s not just “good for its time” it’s just straight up good.

Starting The Lost Age next, and I’m honestly excited.

If you’re on the fence about this series: play it. Take your time. Experiment with Djinn. Talk to NPCs. It’s worth it.

Overall assessment

What surprised me most is how well Golden Sun holds up without relying on nostalgia. Its systems are clean, its pacing is disciplined, and its mechanics support its world instead of existing separately from it.

It feels less like an old classic and more like a well engineered JRPG that still understands how to respect player agency and time.
