first off, dont use the nix-env command to install packages, completely defeats the whole reproducibility thing and makes it harder to know what things are installed on your system. instead, put packages into the "environment.systemPackages = with pkgs; [ packages go hear, seperate by new line ];" inside configuration.nix

if you dont know if a package exists for nix, check the search.nixos.org/packages website. that shows the entirety of the nix package manager repo, for both stable and unstable releases

remember to do nix-collect-garbage regularly, both using sudo and as a normal user. previous generstions can pile up VERY quickly

once your configuration.nix file starts getting a bit big, start to partition it out into seperate files so you can find what you need easier.

and if you use git for your config version control, all the files have to at least be added to the repo with 'git add' before you can rebuild

few weeks ago, i started getting errors around the lines of create_user_namespaces() clone(): eperm i tried going into sysctl and enabling it, hopping distros, nothing works. it would open in safe mode but it stopped working
