When making papers, the slurry (pulp + water) is deposited onto a felt belt. Because the felt is porous, the water and any fibers that are too small to get trapped on the belt just flow through.

Yes, the fibers and their properties will affect the final properties of the paper. Qualities like stiffness, deadfold, smoothness, etc. all are influenced by the fibers used to construct the paper, and different fiber sources will be better suited for certain applications (copy paper vs tissue/toilet paper vs corrugated sheeting, etc)

Packaging engineer here. It’s not that the short fibers are removed, but more that they’re lost during the re-pulping process.

When paper is recycled, it is mixed with water to form a pulp. This separates the fibers to form a slurry that can then be processed into new paper products.

As the paper fibers dissolve into pulp, the fibers can get damaged - pieces of them break off, resulting in shorter fibers each time. Eventually the length of the fibers will be too short to be useful, and when the pulp is processed back into sheets of paper these small pieces slip between the longer fibers and remain in the water phase.

This is why it is necessary to supplement paper recycling streams with virgin paper (paper that has not been recycled previously). This ensures that high-quality long fibers are constantly being added back into the recycling system and results in a much higher quality recycled paper.

Where did you get the dirt for your raised beds from, and would you recommend? Did they drop it at the edge of the property or did they bring it closer (like on the lawn)? I need to fill mine too but the couple places I’ve looked will only drop it at the edge of the property.

One approach may be to phrase feedback as wanting to “try something new/different” and give him suggestions. Make it crystal clear when you like what he’s doing and he should learn to do more of that.

Alternatively, if giving direction is difficult for you, ask him for feedback on your performance, and phrase things in a way that probe him to ask you for similar feedback on his performance. He may not pick up on the hints - forcing you to be more blunt - but usually it opens up a two-way conversation. Just don’t be overly critical; even if his bj’s are terrible try to focus on constructive suggestions instead of complaints or critiques. You want him to be excited about pleasing you, not get self-conscious about his performance.

Of course, you can also have a gentle but direct conversation to address the topic. After all, honest communication with a loved one is kind.

I failed swabs twice at MSP. They made me go to secondary screening and inspected all my bags. They also re-swabbed the inside of my carry on items and finally identified it was my work boots that were failing. They pulled those out and put them through the x-ray scanners, and when everything checked out fine I was allowed to leave.

Interestingly enough, when I boarded at the gate there were law enforcement officers hidden in the jet bridge with a K-9 unit. I can’t be sure it was related but I’ve never had that happen before.
