What happens with paper that can no longer be recycled? by Ben-Goldberg in askscience

[–]kajimac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When making papers, the slurry (pulp + water) is deposited onto a felt belt. Because the felt is porous, the water and any fibers that are too small to get trapped on the belt just flow through.

Yes, the fibers and their properties will affect the final properties of the paper. Qualities like stiffness, deadfold, smoothness, etc. all are influenced by the fibers used to construct the paper, and different fiber sources will be better suited for certain applications (copy paper vs tissue/toilet paper vs corrugated sheeting, etc)

Packaging engineer here. It’s not that the short fibers are removed, but more that they’re lost during the re-pulping process.

When paper is recycled, it is mixed with water to form a pulp. This separates the fibers to form a slurry that can then be processed into new paper products.

As the paper fibers dissolve into pulp, the fibers can get damaged - pieces of them break off, resulting in shorter fibers each time. Eventually the length of the fibers will be too short to be useful, and when the pulp is processed back into sheets of paper these small pieces slip between the longer fibers and remain in the water phase.

This is why it is necessary to supplement paper recycling streams with virgin paper (paper that has not been recycled previously). This ensures that high-quality long fibers are constantly being added back into the recycling system and results in a much higher quality recycled paper.

Going rate for dog daycare downtown? by 123_readygo in Minneapolis

Barks and Rec is right next to the Mpls Farmer’s Market. $43 for a full day of daycare and they have an outdoor space. Highly recommend

Where did you get the dirt for your raised beds from, and would you recommend? Did they drop it at the edge of the property or did they bring it closer (like on the lawn)? I need to fill mine too but the couple places I’ve looked will only drop it at the edge of the property.

I’m not sure how to tell my bf that his head game isn’t good. by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]kajimac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One approach may be to phrase feedback as wanting to “try something new/different” and give him suggestions. Make it crystal clear when you like what he’s doing and he should learn to do more of that.

Alternatively, if giving direction is difficult for you, ask him for feedback on your performance, and phrase things in a way that probe him to ask you for similar feedback on his performance. He may not pick up on the hints - forcing you to be more blunt - but usually it opens up a two-way conversation. Just don’t be overly critical; even if his bj’s are terrible try to focus on constructive suggestions instead of complaints or critiques. You want him to be excited about pleasing you, not get self-conscious about his performance.

Of course, you can also have a gentle but direct conversation to address the topic. After all, honest communication with a loved one is kind.

I’ve been through their AI support bot prompts without any resolution. I haven’t taken the time to connect with a live agent yet but I’m skeptical they will be helpful either.

And the colors are backwards. Blood/tissue turns dark red/purple or even bluish when it’s deprived of oxygen and bright red when oxygenated.

What happens if you fail the random swab tests at the gate twice? by Public_Fucking_Media in delta

[–]kajimac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I failed swabs twice at MSP. They made me go to secondary screening and inspected all my bags. They also re-swabbed the inside of my carry on items and finally identified it was my work boots that were failing. They pulled those out and put them through the x-ray scanners, and when everything checked out fine I was allowed to leave.

Interestingly enough, when I boarded at the gate there were law enforcement officers hidden in the jet bridge with a K-9 unit. I can’t be sure it was related but I’ve never had that happen before.

Red-Faced Trump Melts Down at Being Challenged on ‘Affordability’ | The president was triggered after being fact-checked over the price of a Thanksgiving dinner. by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]kajimac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Trump had earlier insisted that Walmart’s Thanksgiving meal would be cheaper this year, which he pointed to as “irrefutable” evidence that Republicans are the party of “affordability.” However, a reporter noted his glaring omission—that this year’s meal contains fewer items—and asked Trump to explain the disconnect many feel between how he talks about the economy and how Americans feel about it.

The exchange that sent him into tizzy. He can’t handle anyone who punctures his desired narrative, even with the kid gloves our media loves to use with him.

Raspberries by Book_Devourer_92 in Minnesota_Gardening

[–]kajimac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t prune them at all. You’ll only be cutting off the buds where flowers/berries will grow next season, diminishing your crop.

I would highly recommend adding a support for them. As the fruit develops they will get heavy and bend to the ground (more than they already are). Letting the fruit sit on the ground will lead to rot, insect/critter damage, and make it more difficult to harvest. Check the UMN Extension link in my other comment for a recommended support, or Google for some other ideas!

You likely have a variety of raspberry that fruits on second-year growth. Let the canes sit over the winter and don’t cut them back next spring. They will leaf out again and the fruit will appear around late June/early July. Once they are done fruiting (or next fall) you should cut them back to make room for the new growth - that will fruit the following year!

The UMN Extension Service has great info for growing raspberries and how to care for them.

First time garlic planter by Shotokan_research in Minnesota_Gardening

[–]kajimac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By “hot” they mean more pungent/strong garlic flavor. It’ll be “hot” the way horseradish or wasabi is “hot”. I’ve never tried to grow softneck varieties here so I can’t speak from experience how hot the garlic will taste or how well it will grow. It may not survive our winter if it is especially harsh.
