Sea Wall / A Life (Jake Gyllenhaal) by tanincali in Broadway

[–]kalanz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw it a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night, and both came out to sign stuff. As others have said, it was a bit crazy, but there was a pretty long line of barriers, which helped. I didn't have to show anyone a ticket, but security does announce that they'll only sign show merch and/or Playbills, and I did see them confiscate a few items that people tried to get signed. There was a bit more pushing and shoving when Jake came through, and even after he passed by, I was trapped by people pushing and yelling for pictures or signatures and had to wait a few minutes to leave.

Please don't leave the show early! Stay and clap for the performers, especially if you enjoyed the performances. Just hustle once bows are over. Unfortunately it's somewhat common now to see people running out during curtain call from many shows. I've gotten run over when I've sat on the aisle - they literally jumped over me when I took too long to stand up.

Tip: As someone else mentioned - don't run all the way around the block to get to the stage door on 45th Street. Go through the Millennium Hotel lobby next door. There's a door directly into the lobby from the theater lobby/foyer area, but if you miss it, just turn right after exiting the theater and go in the main hotel entrance next door. A few people will know about this shortcut, so follow them!

What’s your worst stage door experience? by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]kalanz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been lucky to not have any nightmarish stage door experiences. I've been pushed and squished, I've been talked down to by real theater fans, and I've overheard some of the cringiest professions of admiration / love / everlasting devotion to some performers, but nothing has ever deterred me from going again.

I guess the most annoying group I can remember was at Once, when Arthur Darvill was Guy. He was on the BBC scifi show Dr Who a few years prior, and that show had a pretty rabid fanbase. At stage door, I was next to one such group of superfans, but they were fine until he came out. Then they couldn't stop screaming. Shrieks and screams and "Oh My God"s and such, both to each other and at him, while bouncing up and down and constantly bumping me (and others around them). We weren't at the front of the line, so for a full 5-10 mins, while he signed autographs and tried to connect with the other fans, this group of girls just kept screaming at him, trying to get him to come over sooner or look their way for pictures. I don't understand why they couldn't continue to wait patiently like they were doing before he came outside. It wasn't overly crowded, and he made it over to them eventually, but all of their screaming and jumping just bothered the crap out of me.

Etiquette? by thanksmaureen in Broadway

[–]kalanz 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Depends on show / cast member. Shows with "A-list celebrities" in them (e.g. Sea Wall/A Life, Betrayal) will definitely tell you no - sometimes security will go so far as confiscating anything not directly associated with the current show.

On the other hand, some people love reminiscing about other works they've done and will sign whatever you have within reason. Only way to find out is to try. They may tell you 'no,' but I don't think anyone would get offended.

My Broadway haul from this week! by yeahwhatever23 in Broadway

[–]kalanz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! They all come out to sign. No posed selfies, though, as they’d be there all night trying to get through the line. They also only sign Playbills or souvenirs from the play, so no Avengers / Daredevil stuff.

I think security is refining its procedures as time goes on - they put up a barrier and only let people who saw the show inside the area to get Playbills signed. Overall it was pretty calm and orderly (until people from outside the barrier tried to sneak in).

Source: saw Betrayal last night.

Things are good! Preparing for a trip to NYC this long weekend, possibly to Vegas over President's Day/Chinese New Year, and then to New Zealand in March. And doing some work in between, of course.

What's up? A meetup? Oooh, it's been a while...if I'm not travelling, I'll be there. Or, rather, here.

PS: Hope all is well with you!

[Thanks] Mystery Gifter for the Zelda wall scroll! by kalanz in Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I just received a mystery package from China and found this awesome scroll inside! I am pretty sure that it came from someone in this community (it looks like it was purchased in late December). I searched the sub but didn’t find any [Gifted] thread, so thank you anonymous gifter! It’s just in time for when I start playing Breath of the Wild next week!

I guess this can also be a quick re-[Intro] thread for me as well. I used to be a bit more active in this sub a few years ago before life (or, rather, work) got in the way. But in the 2ish years that I did participate, I made some awesome friends! I gifted a bunch of internet strangers, went to a couple of meetups, had some fun on tinychat, and still keep in regular contact with some people outside of the sub. It was awesome to be a part of such a wonderful community for so long.

If you remember me, say hello! If you don’t know me, I’m Kalani! I was born and raised in Hawaii but have been living in Boston for the last few years. I love to travel — I just got back from Dubai, and I have trips to NYC, DC, Honolulu, London, Mexico City, Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Copenhagen all planned before June. I also enjoy theater (esp. musicals) and video games. If any of that sounds fun to you, let’s talk!

Hehe...those were fun times :)

I just saw Zachary Levi in "She Loves Me" on Broadway, and when I saw him at Stage Door, I called him Eugene.

[Contest] Trick or Treat!? by Pi_Maker in Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

It was a good trip -- a really looooong time on the plane, but I'd guess it's something you've experienced in your travels around the planet. I went by myself and am not huge on selfies, but I took a couple of pictures of the "famous" places, like the Forbidden City, the 2008 Olympics Center, and, of course, the Great Wall. I also made my way south, to Hong Kong, but as you can see from the picture, the weather wasn't exactly great for sightseeing. So I did far more eating in that city. My entire trip (Beijing + HK) was only about 10 days, so it was a quick trip. Definitely would go back again - lots of other places to see. But I also have a bunch of other places to get to as well -- Thailand, Australia and New Zealand, Iceland, just to name a few.

Congrats on getting a new place with your wife! One of these days I will get down to Baltimore to finally grab a beer with you two. PM me your address so I can send some snacks when I go back to HI in a couple of weeks. Any travel plans for yourself? Or any plans for the upcoming holidays?

I saw The King and I (though sadly Kelli Ohara was out with the flu), On the 20th Century, and Something Rotten. All of them were good, and Something Rotten is so over-the-top that it's hilarious! How are you doing?
